but I got on all the Mountain rides my first trip to Disneyland
I've only been on Splash Mountain and the Matterhorn. The one time we went in 2004 was just days after the guy died on Big Thunder Railroad so that was closed while they worked on what went wrong and prevent it from happening again. And Space Mountain was closed for extensive refurbishment for the big 50th year anniversary in 2005. The only two times we went to Disney World were when I was 2 and then 4 so I was too young for the big rides, and Splash Mountain was under construction at the time. So I've always wanted to ride Big Thunder Railroad and especially Space Mountain and was very disappointment that I was unable to.

2002 was the first year I went and I don't recall there being pins then, even a few years later for a school graduation trip.
I was there in 2004 and pins were out in full force. Just about every gift shop had them, especially on Main Street. Nobody was trading at the time, though. People would just buy one or two because they're the cheapest souvenir available.

I think the reason Matterhorn is such a long wait is because they intentionally are keeping only the Fantasyland side running - the Tomorrow land side's tracks run alongside the section where the old plasterwork fell and the scrim covering the damage is still there, visible from the 'Partners' statue at the end of Main Street. This was a few months ago so why they haven't gotten that back up and running is beyond me.
What happened, the earthquakes in July? I was under the impression that since the quake epicenter was so far away that it didn't affect anything in the park.

I thought only the Japanese version of the Pooh ride had trackless technology? The only current trackless ride I know of in California is whatever the Luigi ride in Cars Land is now.

Ah, you're right, the Disneyland version is the ONLY one that isn't trackless.

Glad you had a good day, that much more resembles the Disneyland I remember than the hot mess they're making of adding new IPs to the park. I agree that despite hating Disney as a company the parks are still enjoyable. As much as they want to get rid of the old shit people love and replace it with new bland and marketable garbage that's a lot harder to do with the parks. (Unless the park is Epcot, RIP) Indiana Jones is my favorite ride there by far. People love the mountains, but Indy is my choice of 'big' ride there. You're absolutely right about Matterhorn, btw. I feel like the main reason people ride it is because of its history and status as a Disneyland Only Mountain, because everyone knows it'll kill your back. It used to be better before they changed the cars.

Yeah, the mass trend of IP dumping in the parks just feels extremely weak. Part of what made Disneyland so great is that it had so many unique narratives independent of the limited number of franchises they had - like, Enchanted Tiki Room itself is literally nothing but a hybridized showpiece of (now long since dated) animatronic technology controling dozens of hanging birds, etc. and has the Dole Whip stall parked right at the entrance with the implication being you can still eat the Dole Whip while in the Tiki Room. Or Haunted Mansion, where there really isn't even a plot - more like a dozen smaller plots like the entire attic being dedicated to the Bride/Constance, but it remains a hugely popular attraction because it's basically THE haunted house of all haunted houses.

Of course, that didn't stop them from trying to turn the unique rides into franchises, which unfortunately Pirates has paid the price on since what little discernable plot it had is kinda ruined because pretty much EVERY scene in the back half of the ride with spoken lines, aside from the auction scene, somehow had to include Jack Sparrow who is just looking for treasure and has absolutely nothing to do with the whole town getting pillaged. Haunted Mansion, thankfully, escaped having Eddie Murphy shoved in it.

Nah, it just sounds like the ride is just old enough that the mountain itself is literally falling apart.

EDIT: Also, a follow up on my thoughts about bringing the Thermal Detonator coke bottle through TSA screening. Absolutely nothing about it- in fact, the guy doing the screening seemed more pissed off because I forgot to remove a single used tissue from my pocket when I went through the body scanner!

Final trailer for Frozen 2 is out.

I think it looks ... Surprisingly good! I could have done without the last few seconds with Olaf screaming, but I'm impressed with most of what I'm seeing here. I really hope they keep the comedy at a minimum, because I'm liking the more serious/adventure tone shown in these trailers.

I remember when the trailers for the first Frozen came out, and I thought the movie looked awful (because every ad had Olaf everywhere and they emphasized HARD on the comedy). I ended up loving the movie, and I ended up not hating Olaf. The trailers for this movie seem to understand that the thing that made Frozen a hit is the story about the two sisters, and not the zany comedy with the snowman. I still don't hate Olaf, but he is most definitely a character that absolutely needs to be kept in check/kept at a minimum.

God I hope they have a better villain this time.

Call me a cynic, but I don't think they will. I've been burned by too many movies that have a "serious" trailer only to be all jokey and shit. The animation looks nice, and I think the "epic" feel of the trailers does a good job selling that, I just don't think it'll represent the movie accurately. Especially since this is a Disney movie aimed at families, and a modern Disney movie at that.

Eh ... I'm not expecting that, honestly. Disney hasn't been able to make a good classic villain since Dr. Facilier from The Princess and The Frog. Mother Gothel wasn't terrible, but she was easily my least favorite part of Tangled. King Candy from Wreck-It-Ralph was good, but Disney has been fixated on "twist" villains ever since, and it sucks.

I think it would be cool if Elsa became the villain. The trailer suggests that Elsa dabbling into too much magic might be too large of a task for her to control. It would be cool if this movie borrowed a bit from The Snow Queen and turned Elsa into a villain until the end. Not holding my breath for it, don't get me wrong, but I think it would be pretty cool.

Awhile back it was announced that Disney edited the blooper reel in Toy Story 2 because there was a reference to the casting couch. Now will they ban A Bug's Life from the public? Not only it stars Kevin Spacey but a running gag of the male ladybug character, Francis, being mistaken for a female could be deemed "transphobic".

Probably not, because A Bug's Life isn't exactly one of Pixar's well-known movies.

That'd miss the entire point of Francis' establishing character moment where he goes off on a tangent toward the flies because the stigma of a "ladybug" is a hot button topic for him. Besides, Francis is one of the few characters people remember whenever A Bugs' Life comes up because he's actually funny.

Now you have Dim who is a literal 'tard to the point he has himself a 'tard wrangler. Being a "dimwit", clearly he's an attack on the mentally disabled.

Elsa was supposed to be the villain much earlier in her movie's development since it was more of a straight adaptation of The Snow Queen. She became an antihero when Let It Go was in production.

Much of the awkwardness surrounding the Hans character roots in how the order to make him a flat-out villain came rather late. He started out as a character named Admiral Westergaard who was betrothed to Anna.

The Jack Sparrow AA also sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the retro ones.

Plus there's always a fucking traffic jam at the end of the ride, so you get to listen to a drunken Jack Sparrow animatronic sing and ramble at you for ten minutes while morbidly obese people groan and struggle to get out of their boats. This kills the childhood.

I'd argue the female pirate AA is just as jarring, if not more. Hell, any attraction that uses the newer models will stick out like a sore thumb when placed into the old attractions when you really think about it.

But that Jack AA doing a stupid song number for 10 minutes when people want off is an incredibly stupid move on their part.

Is it just me or do the newer AA faces have terrible sculpting? Jack and the redhead look like they’ve been held in front of a fire for a bit.

I didn't really see too much wrong with either of them but the Trump animatronic in the Hall of Presidents is straight up phoned in.

Although there is an uncanny valley factor where they make realistic animatronics that make repetitive robotic motions and it's just unsettling.

Funny you should mention the Trump AA, there’s a lot of speculation that they started the facial sculpt as Hillary but quickly made it into Trump after he won election. Not sure how true it is but it’s hilarious.

But for the PotC AAs the newer ones just seem so flat and mannequin like compared to the more lively originals. The OG imagineers were never happy with early pc overhauls of the ride and now that mist of them are gone the new hands have more say about what changes.

I want to think they make two models for the robots just in case. But look at the Trump robot. I fully believe it started out as Hillary but they turned it into Trump.

yeah it's hard to imagine that RoboTrump as anything else than a hastily repurposed Hillary

but yeah Pirates kinda went to shit a long time ago >implying WDW Pirates was ever good, adding Johnny Depp and other stuff isn't really a big step down from where it was by that point

It's a shame. The OG guys really knew what they were doing.

Doesn't surprise me they would be planning that.

I suppose, but I still liked the original personally but given the movies they had to make based out of that, it probably was for the best where they had to go with it.

It honestly kinda looks like they dug the Ross Perot contingency animatronic out of the utilidoor closet, started turning it into Clinton and then finally turned it into Trump.

Like for fucks sake
