Articles & Happenings is the third attempt at a news board on the Kiwi Farms. It is a cursed place. Every moderator who has been assigned here has resigned within a year. During 2016, the political crossfire was so bad it spread to different boards and culminated in me banning American news discussion entirely for several months. It has been deleted in its entirety twice. There is no actual discussion here, it's people posting garbage. It leans much further right than the rest of the site and doesn't particularly conduct discussion because dissenting opinions are dogpiled by a thousand memelords posting shit they read on /pol/ without any critical analysis.

The only rules that can be enforced are empirical ones with boolean violation answers. New threads must cite a real source directly and must use the headline of the article as a thread title without any editorializing. Articles must be archived in some way and must link to the original article. Replies that are one word or a reaction images are automatic one-month bans from the board.

I'm creating this now because it seems like this place is here to stay and is one of the largest areas of the entire site. I might as well throw in bare minimum effort to improve it. I don't even try to find mods for here because they will quit, without exception. I've added new prefixes ("Business" and "Crime") just now.

I feel the OP basically laid out all the reasons this sub should be closed. It is essentially a right-wing version of ResetEra, where any attempt at making quality discussion and adding nuanced opinions is seen as you pissing in people's cornflakes.

The ratings system only makes the problem worse because it dissuades people from breaking out of the "norm" and creates an even more autistic circlejerk than people here complain about. IMO, if there is a 1st solution to be attempted, it should be disabling the ratings system on this sub.

Most of us would be completely happy to not read A&H threads, and do, but A&H being so prominent has definitely led to an influx of a certain kind of user who takes their stupid political and social opinions outside of A&H and then starts inserting them into cow threads, where there's really no need. They also only tend to make threads on cows because of ideological differences, not just because the cow is a funny mess. This is a shift that is slowly happening site wide.

That doesn't mean the answer is to nuke/fuck with it. If the users you speak of are doing exactly that, then why not ban/warn them when they do so and let them know why? Seems like a lazy answer to a moderation issue if that's the logic behind it.

They do. At some point it has to get incredibly annoying seeing month old posters go into a thread that they don't know anything about and shit it up because they don't lurk and don't understand site/subforum culture.

That said, saying to nuke this subforum reeks of overreaction and personal anger towards it.

A&H is nothing like ResetEra. ResetEra mods will ban you for merely disagreeing with a small clique of protected posters, who use it as their own personal blog/hugbox/place to cry for help about their dismal lives. Whilst A&H does have a bit of an outrage treadmill, it's nothing like REEEEEra's - nobody posts that they're literally shaking because someone did a wrongthink, nobody tries to organise brigades or boycotts, and nobody tries to banbait dissenters the way ERA's central posting clique do.

From my experiences on SA, a place where Lowtax refuses to implement post ratings on principle, that's not the case. Instead of a bunch of little stickers, you get sperglords creating massive textwalls about how you're Literally Hitler. Indirectly, this caused the downfall of the site, because only the Communist Tardbux NEET Patrol had the time to dogpile people, the mods and admins thought that was the "culture" of the majority of the userbase (which it wasn't) then moderated it until all the normal people were banned or just quit.

Just as bad, because the only way you can indicate that you agree or disagree with a post was to make a post of your own, and every asshole thinks their opinion needs to be heard even if it's exactly the same opinion as the previous poster, 90% of SA posts are "you r dumb" or "this! so much this!" and it makes the forums unreadable with white-noise posts and dumb hot takes. A&H has a big enough problem with low-content posting as it is without doing this.

Its a shame you can't implement some kind of subthread post categorization and filter, wherein each poster in an A&H thread categorizes his post by "Commentary," "Information" and "Shitpost," and anyone who clicks on the thread can either click on the whole thread or filter it by post category. Thus, people who only want to read informative posts can click on the "Information" tag and only see those posts that contain informative information.

You're thinking of things like the Trump Derangement Syndrome thread versus the r/the_donald thread in Community Watch, aren't you?

The r/the_donald thread is sad. Not only do they struggle to dunk on the low-hanging fruit that is r/the_donald, but they got so assblasted when ONE person went into there to argue with them that they banned him from the thread.

Maybe what that other guy said was right. Maybe kiwi leftists are too fucking milquetoast to handle the bantz.

Why the enmity towards A&H in particular, for all this time?

I have, and I can tell you that they get shouted down and given plenty of negative ratings most of the time.

The interesting thing about guys like Corbin getting lumped in with the concept of /pol/-lite posters is that, if memory serves me right, he absolutely hated sperging about "da Joos" and various racial arguments.

Another thing that could probably be done is to institute a rule that says if, say, Person X already has a recent thread with an article about them, and a new one comes up, post the article in that thread. That way we don't get 3-4 threads about Greta Thunberg.

The Lawsuit update thread is becoming a pain in the ass to read recently thanks to these KickVic spergs who parrot page after page after page of the same shit, and people respond to that. IDK, that feels like more of a pain in the ass than any large A&H thread I have been on/interacted with. I just want to see an update on the lawsuit and legal analysis, not read 20+ pages of @DinkyCowSow's garbage on repeat.

Really think the issues with A&H are a) no one reads past the thread article, or reads the article at all, and b) the odd sperg who shits up threads with constant drivel that no one cares about.

Is it? Because I don't see the same consistent, tireless bitching about WW as I do A&H, and by comparison WW gets mocked, A&H gets calls to nuke it from orbit. There's a hatred for A&H from some people on the site, and they know who they are, that borders on the fucking irrational. I just don't/haven't seen that kind of raw hate for any other part of the site, even if it's orders of magnitude spergier.
