That's really the crux of the matter. These kids were never really kids. They were never conscious in any way that could be perceived as normal. They never emoted. They never socialized on any real level. It's all been a flesh puppet show that Gwen has insisted on putting on and it's just gotten grimmer and grimmer as time has gone on. This is ALL and always has been all about Gwen. She couldn't be bothered to show her children the bare amount of respect for their dignity which tells me that she knows full well there is nothing there, but occasionally firing neurons. She disgusts me for that reason and for the way she's treated Cal. As far as her useless wimp husband, well, he's not much better. Just a weak, pathetic bastard. He knows better, too.The girls both occupy an uncanny valley where we recognize them as having a vaguely human shape with human features, but there's something deeply repulsive about both of them. They're missing the most essential component of humanity. It's a body with nothing in it. Humans are social creatures, and we recognize on a visceral level that the existence of such a creature is simply wrong. They're the kind of creatures that start folklore about monsters and other types of stories. Gwen can play up her fan fiction about them all she wants, but her audience that isn't mainlining the Kool-Aid can tell. Remember when she got butthurt when she forced some trick or treaters to interact with the potatoes, and one of them said something mean? Those kids recognized right away that Gwen was flesh doll warden and were creeped out by it.
Other grossly deformed, burned, or otherwise disfigured people who remain intellectually active escape the valley. They retain their ability interact with the world, have their own thoughts and feelings, smile, laugh, and otherwise share a human experience with others despite their outward appearance. They may appear disgusting, but they're not repulsive like the girls are.
