The Left is the one side that advocates for class warfare. Because most class problems nowdays aren't entirely economical and modern Leftism has run out of actual problems to deal with, they've switched to identity class, as in "homosexual vs heterosexual", "man vs women", etc rather than "the 1% vs the 99%" as they initially did because most of their main supporters happen to be the 1% and they don't want us the rest to notice that they are the real enemy.
So, yes, it's confusing. In theory, Leftism advocates for the rights of social minorities, whatever their "minorism" is about (blacks, women, gays, etc), unlike Communism that looks for a one single human hivemind where everybody is the same in every aspect which, by definition, would get rid of any of these differences. They've both now mixed up and that's one of the many reasons why the modern left is eating itself constantly, because it contradicts itself as it has pseudo-liberal beliefs ("people have the right to be different and not follow social standards") that can work with both the left and the right with actual communism ("people should comply to the idea everybody needs to be the same in every aspect").
That's why it's easier to call it "the left" or "the liberals".
