They truly never thought Trump would atomic-bomb them with the transcript, they thought he'd pull the same obstruction game he currently is playing with his taxes (for different reasons, but, ultimately that's another can-o-worms).
They thought they'd be able to keep this "Secret talk with the Ukrane" a shadowy cloud over his head so they could keep up the "impeachment" talk for all of the 2020 run, and mollify the socialist ankle-biters who want a legal-on-paper coup.
But Trump released the Doppler radar image of exactly WHAT that could is and exactly WHERE and WHAT it's hovering over. They never thought he'd do that, immediately, it cut the knees of this Mueller Probe 2.0, forcing them to proceed with their threat with it's open baselessness out there for everyone to see, or STFU.
They were relying on being able to perpetuate a scandal by "close annonymous sources" - Trump just said, let's go to court already, let's go to trial, I'm going to give you my defense right now, here it is, let's go get it on record.... and they, having had no plan for this, are stalling and floundering, and ultimately taking worst option, option.
Not "meet him in the Senate" and not "Just drop it" but "pretend what happened didn't happen and maybe the sheep, er, people will believe us!" and have Adam Schiff read DNC fanfic into the Congressional record and have the MSM write panic-pieces on how likely it is the Military will defend Trump when he gets found guilty and removed from office.....

A day later the transcript was released, the whistleblower was incorrect and the conversation was pretty benign
The media censoring and dismissing the biden ordeal as conspiracy is outrageous....especially in light of his statement this morning.
They should all be shut down and thrown from buildings.
