It’s a way to validate an eating disorder and not have it turned on themselves as the culprit (aka you caused this). DISCLAIMER: to be clear we all know true EDs are a mental illness, but it was a rampant goal in the 90s for teen girls to be in that anorexic club for alllllll the attention. I don’t think much has changed except the disorder of choice is now in the POTS/GP/EDS trifecta. It almost seemed like EDs were frowned upon in the 2000s. I’m honestly not part of the ED community in any way so please feel free to correct me, just my experience as a teen in the 90s.
