You're absolutely dead wrong. In Europe, "Asian" means indian only, never used to refer to chinks or japs. I've only ever heard of "asian" meaning ching-chong in places influenced by the US.

Apartheid is a tiered race system consisting of four classes:

Whitey
Asians(read: Indians)
Coloureds
Blacks

Chinese, by South African apartheid policy, were coloured. However, the majority of them ended up actually classified as Asian(read: Indians). I have read a couple of apartheid era books, but I've never found a compelling reason for why that was. Most Chinese obviously pass the pencil test with flying colors, and the tone/features/characteristsics tests puts them right next to the Japanese. I honestly think the government bearucrats just didn't know what the fuck to do with them when it came to actually assigning them a class.

Somewhat tangential, but I feel like "Uncle Tom" is such an ironic term that's still on par with a racial slur. It's a derogatory word to refer to somebody who's black, I fail to see how it's anything other than racist. But unlike other racial slurs, it comes with the latent hypocritical quality of only being spoken by those supposedly against racism.

But I guess that doesn't matter since they had the audacity to think differently, huh?
