The "chemical imbalance" theory of depression isn't reactionary, it's wrong, and basically no one actually believes it. It's just a very easy way to explain why SSRIs work (badly); if depression were caused by an actual serotonin deficiency, you wouldn't need to wait weeks for them to work till receptor downregulation, would you?

(Nor is a headache an aspirin deficiency)

P.S the best treatment for treatment resistant depression is a MAOI + selegiline. Good luck getting a prescriber though.

There's not really a simple explanation; through a extremely indirect route, they enhance BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) gene expression, among others, which seems to lead to neuro/synaptogenesis. Which begs the question, of course. Possibly downregulation of serotonin receptors helps directly, or indirectly through effects on other neurons, most likely noradrenergic neurons (why don't I hear about the "noradrenergic hypothesis"?). Again, I bring up the aspirin/headache analogy; depressed people DON'T have different serotonin levels or numbers of serotonergic neurons or anything like that (prior to treatment). And even if they did, you'd need to show what came first: the horrible lifestyle choices of most depressed people where they'd be crazy not to be depressed, or the underlying neurological substrate. There are ideas on how serotonin is connected to the reward system in various ways (like causing one to not choose to visit unpleasant thoughts or to be able to put off immediate rewards in favour of delayed ones) but, in the context of this question, so what?

The fastest and most effective antidepressants are dopaminergic. Funny that they're all drugs of abuse.

My guess would be low self-esteem leading to a depressive lifestyle. The antidepressants can get you back up to functioning, but then the next step is to unfuck your life, which means breaking out of unhealthy habits. So, they're not magic pills that make all your problems go away.

Getting back to the topic of the thread, the takeaway is that ultimately you have to make a choice to unfuck your life. Drugs and therapy can certainly help, but at the end of the day, the person who is accountable for your actions is yourself. SJWs hate that. In this context, trooning becomes effectively a "born again" method of realizing that not only are you a helpless victim or oppression, you always were. It's alluring because it makes all of your failures and misery not your fault, and it allows you to cast stones at your critics.

This is why I will never feel any more than a pang of sympathy for troons, TBH. The damage they do to themselves is horrific, and they're only prolonging their own misery chasing a pipe dream - but the pipe dream is a shit one to start with. They're essentially just overgrown spoiled children, without the folly of youth to excuse their shortcomings - most of us with decent parents got past this developmental stage after a few stern reminders that the entire fucking world doesn't revolve around our feelings and what we want, and to always bear in mind the needs of those around us in balance with our own.

I've been seeing a lot on here about the puer aeterna concept and how troons are essentially perpetual children. I think there's a lot to be said for that, but sadly not only are they perpetual children - they're perpetual bigger versions of the terrible, screeching, spoiled little shits we all knew and studiously avoided even when we were children ourselves.
