He's just going to be a painfully generic JJ Bad Guy (TM). None of the snide enthusiasm he had on the Death Star II, none of the scheming magnificence in the prequels, and probably not even enough hammy overacting to really make it feel like Sheev anymore.^Watch Disney turn him into one of their new boring villains Ala new Scar or Jafar or the guy from Frozen, or turn him into a Trump analogue dissmising Rey and her token band.
That's the only part I'm cautiously optimistic about, actually. Ian MacDarmid has never turned in a bad performance as the Sheev, even when he was delivering that godawful Lucas dialog... I don't know if this movie is physically capable of having any bright spots, but if it does, he'll be one of them. He's just going to be a painfully generic JJ Bad Guy (TM). I hope you like Tired, Generic Palpatine (TM)!
Don't watch it. Lucas dialogue has wonderful meme potential. JJ or RJ dialogue is just so bland, boring, and painful that it isn't even funny. That's the only part I'm cautiously optimistic about, actually. Yeah the Dark Empire trilogy is a very flawed series but is still very endearing. It expanded the universe by introducing Mon Cala, Onderon, Ossus, Nar Shadda, Vjun, and Byss which would go on to become prominent locations in legends with about half that list being implemented into Disney Canon, It produced 2 great spinoffs: Crimson Empire which is a simple yet effective revenge story and Tales of The Jedi which opened the door to the Old Republic Era (Tales does not get enough love). Like you said it also has some of the better EU superweapons in the form of the World Devastator which bucks the trend of being yet another giant Kill Sat for as well as the Eclipse which is just plain cool (Don't much care for the Galaxy Gun though I do like the concept of shooting a projectile through hyperspace).I give Dark Empire credit for getting Star Wars' foot in the door in the realm of comics.
Also keep in mind that back then, we were STARVED for Star Wars material, and just ate up everything we could get our hands on. So if the reaction to it back then was positive, it is largely because of the "OMG! NEW STAR WARS STUFF!" reaction.
Nowadays, I could trip over a rock and land in something Star Wars related, so we have to be a lot pickier with what we choose to consume, if we decide to consume any of it. But that post ROTJ-pre Special Edition period was almost a dead zone for Star Wars material, so we were happy just to have books and comics when they came out.
Some of that early EU is very good (Thrawn Trilogy is the true VII, VIII, and IX to me, and always will be) and some of it not so much (Crystal Star...yikes) but there was so little of it that we were just happy to have it. I know it is hard to imagine a world where there wasn't much Star Wars out there, but that was the case back then.
Now, my take on Dark Empire:
Again, I give it credit for being an honest attempt at a Star Wars comic series and getting the brand recognition in that medium.
And it does have some really good things in it. It is one of the earliest examples I can think of where Boba Fett was used effectively.
Some of the art work is good, though it leans a little too much into being monochromatic, and a lot of it is this pukey green color whenever Luke has his Lightsaber out.
However, it never was one of my favorites because I felt the Emperor cloning plot and Luke's temporary fall to the Dark Side kind of went against the ending of Return of the Jedi too much. Also, the Galaxy Gun (as with most planet busters in the EU) was fucking dumb. Now World Devestators I was actually okay with because those at least served an additional function of collecting a planet's resources for the Empire to use in addition to destroying a world, so at least it felt somewhat different from the typical Death Star knock off.
If I was being honest, I'd give it about C. Its place in Star Wars history is that it was what made it a viable brand for comic books, but on its own, its just okay. Still, I'd say its worth checking out at least once.

Yeah I agree I always saw it as a formality between them; like a fencing match that gave Vader a chance to gloat. I never got the sense that Obi-Wan was fighting for his life.Honestly, I am one of the ones that is completely fine with how the original duel between Vader and Obi-Wan went as it was a big tower of power half machine going against a far past his prime warrior, so it being limited made sense to me.
However, this redo is shockingly good.
You know what, fuck it. I'm going to go out and say something:Even villains in Sonichu get more limelight.
You know what, fuck it. I'm going to go out and say something:
JJ Abrams is on par with fucking Chris-Chan when it comes to actual creativity. Both steal previously existing concepts, tweak them barely, and claim the resultant abortion as their own. The only difference is JJ was born into a position for nepotism where Chris was just born in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.
I'd actually rather watch a movie directed by Chris than a movie directed by JJ, because at least Chris deviated in the creation of his own plotlines, bizarre meta shit, and rampant, inappropriate cartoon hedgehog sex. JJ is just bland in comparison, his plots lead nowhere, and he hasn't done anything nearly as bold or experimental as Chris has.
Alias was good until JJ walked outCan’t say I’m a fan of literally anything else he’s been involved with though.

Only mention Soy Wars if it's discussed. Otherwise you're a tard.If you're not going around IRL spoilering the movie for people, you're not doing something right.
This is on par with what happened with Game of Thrones.
Seeing as it has "ustv" in the url, it's probably a BritishOnly mention Soy Wars if it's discussed. Otherwise you're a tard.

At this point i think it's JJ testing parts of the 6 different cuts to see if anything sticks and so far I've only seen Reylo fangirl crazies biting. Are Lucasfilm employees doing this now as some sort of half-assed attempt at generating hype or were they too afraid to post leaks due to some contractual consequences that would no longer be valid after the trailer's release? At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if we have pics from every scene in the movie by November.
Somebody mentioned ~20pages back that the quick trailer shot of Rey's fight on the death star debris looks terrible. It's been three films and it still doesn't look like Daisey Ridley has any idea on how to swing a sword, at least Alec Guinness had the excuses of being old, fighting a guy in a rubber costume and not knowing exactly what was going on. I mostly consider the prequel fights to be too flashy and badly choreographed and I'd take it a thousand times over what it looks like in the ST.Yeah I agree I always saw it as a formality between them; like a fencing match that gave Vader a chance to gloat. I never got the sense that Obi-Wan was fighting for his life.
