TGWTG The Spoony One / Spoony / Noah Antwiler and Rachel Baker / @RaeAngel07 - The touching romance between a washed-up videogame reviewer throwing a decade-long pity party and his delusional Canuck stalker. #weaknotsick #donttellmehowtosulk

Noah should know that video game journalism is not a bubble that will ignore what others in your group have done. Its like if someone from Screwattack did the same thing. They would fuck up so much. Then again its Noah im sure he probably doesnt care about keeping up an image.

None of the TGWTG alumnus learned professionalism because they never had to. They had no rules or superiors to hold them to any standard and none of them had any real world experience prior to their web careers. This is the eternal peril of both being self-employed and being handed fame before you've been denied anything in life.

I mean wouldnt you be furious if you had an opportunity to sky rocket your career and then get fucked because your shitty drunk coworker couldnt be out of character for 5 minutes?

The idea that anyone's internet career would have "skyrocketed" but for Noah's silly yelling is dubious, at best- and lordkat's response was fucking autistic (I believe he later admitted as much, though maybe not in so many words). A youtube career 'failing' does not need explanation and certainly can't be blamed on one interview falling through... unless you're looking for excuses. Hell, one of the few people from that group still relevant is the guy that was literally standing right next to Spoony during the betrayal tantrum, Angry Joe- and Spoony had some relevance for awhile too until he imploded.

LK and Spoony both did themselves in and shouldn't be trying to blame others... although it's fair to say that whole environment was poison.

Which is fucking baffling to me that somehow they were able to run a ship for that long when it ran off such a blatant high school mentality. It's like taking the cast of Saved by the Bell and making them run GE.

Im not saying that it was the one and only reason he failed, LK is certainly a lulcow in his own right, I was just pointing out that in this instance anyone would be pissed off. Though I'd hazard to call Joe relevant. But, to your point that entire environment was a poisonous wasteland of egos and petty squabbles. Shit all you need to do is see the whole DnD incident with Spoony just popping into LKs stream and screaming at people over "not playing the game right". As I said above the fact that this company has stood for THIS long and has somehow not completely imploded in on itself is a miracle of some sort. I've seen legit businesses go down for less than this.

When the Amazing Atheist did a video about his time at TGWTG, he referenced an employee who showed him the ropes when he started. Kirk didn't give the guys name but he had an obviously high opinion of him. Kirk wasn't entirely clear, but I got the impression that this unnamed employee wasn't just being nice in showing around the new guy, he was actually giving a proper induction to the company. In a way that any professional company would to a new employee.

Later on in the video, he mentions that at a certain point the same employee left. HR is often referenced by former content creators on the TGWTG, I wonder if there were a few key admin or HR staff that were actually helping keep the wheels on the bus. Protecting the owners, upper management and content creators from themselves.

I would not be at all surprised if that were the case, TWTWG seemed like it had one or two people with good heads on their shoulders and sadly thats where most of the weight to show the new folks around landed. Sure as hell wasnt gonna be Doug or Noah. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just their HR staff that actually tried to make the company less of a tard wrangled mess and more of a legitimate business. I wonder if most of those old HR people are still there or if they mostly jumped ship.

Right? People made it onto the site if they could pretend to be angry well enough, but when they were forced to play together their serious social issues blew up like a hidden bomb. These issues also included histrionic personality disorders, manic depression, bipolar lows, and gender dysphoria.

Oh, and rape.

The D&D 5e book review was when I sensed things taking a turn. Now I try to look back on all those Counter Monkey videos with fond memories, wondering if Spoony was actually the worst GM in the history of the medium. Can you imagine what happened to your characters when he forgot to take his medicine?

Someone mentioned Spoony is the Lindsay Lohan of internet reviewers. He might be the Artie Lange.

The fact is that most of these people were and still are extremely sheltered people who outside of having some charisma and a bit of a comedic bone, have no business being in the spotlight. And with most if not ALL of the past contributors having some sort of mental illness confirmed by themselves be it depression, ADHD, autism, etc, its a fucking miracle that these people were able to coexist to make 1 anniversary special let alone 3 and thats excluding the multiple crossovers each had with eachother over the years. I would love to be a fly on the wall of one of the meetings they had for these specials when certain people left the room. The amount of shit these people must talk could fill Godzillas litter box. Im shocked that none of their skype calls or any calls for that matter were never leaked to the public (that I know of). This is a weird analogy to make but CA as a whole reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence, they got too big too fast and were never able to be mature enough to know how to handle their new found fame. Maybe some of the smaller folk that left arent AS bad, but the top brass and even a level or two below it are the worst offenders. How must it feel to have such a big ego over such a relatively small bit of fame? I swear the behind the scene shit talk and politicking would make Hulk Hogan blush, brother.

Also, at least Artie Lange is actually doing something with himself now and admits hes a piece of shit.

Any of the initial TGWTG creators live in their own little purgatory on the internet with their fans. A place where 2008 never ended. For example I went to one of Linkara's latest videos. He's still just doing the same stuff. Still sitting on that green couch and people eat that shit up.

It's probably best Spoony ended his career years ago. He'd probably still be doing "I heard that Curtis" and "You're in my way sir" jokes to this day.

Spoony's playthrough was also chock-a-block full of MST3K-style humor (punchy cultural references meant to poke fun, as you put it), and some jokes were lifted wholesale from that show, which was why I liked it so much when I first saw it. I thought to myself, "YES, this guy is witty and intelligent, applying a tried-and-true formula to a new medium!" and fuck was I wrong. Call it youthful ignorance or just starving for better content on the internet at the time but to my eyes Spoony benefited in huge ways from there being literally no better game in town when he was at his peak.

Now he's working against both his own issues and the fact that the internet entertainment market is now absolutely flooded with content, such that if you want to make it you need to be truly exceptional (in either the real or wordfiltered sense, or shit, ¿porque no los dos?) or lucky as fuck to genuinely make it long-term. Not a good position to be in, the back of the pack and still trying to run the same race. Switch it up, Noah. This ain't for you anymore.

ETA: I'll admit, though: "I HEARD THAT, CURTIS" still gets a laugh out of me.
I'd say almost every member of Channel Awesome was a fluke that only got popular because there was nothing else to watch at the time. Off the top of my head, LordKat and Guru Larry are the only people that didn't become cows.

Noah streamed briefly this morning and finished Wing Commander IV, which I believe the first time he's completed a game on stream in ages:

He then claimed he was "out of breath" after streaming for barely eighty minutes and like every time he says this, never came back:

He went on to express interest in The Outer Worlds but was too lazy to figure out what platform to get (read: wishlist it) for.

Bizarrely, he also relisted a Live Wire from September 2018.

Mike Jeavons always stood out as a bizzarely "normal" person among the crowd i believe. Dont follow him or his videos very regular now but he still seems.....normal. (unless freaking out past 6 months or so.)

Allthough...MikeJ was never one of the bigger ones on the site. He certainly was one of the best though. Cant remember when he showed up on the site now but he was not among the very earliest ones i think.

I remember when he made his video contributing to #CTC and he had to explain to his audience what Channel Awesome was, which I think says it all. I remember discovering him through TGWTG, so it was surreal to see him have to tell people what it was in the first place.

"Any of the initial TGWTG creators live in their own little purgatory on the internet with their fans. A place where 2008 never ended" that is the most perfect way I've ever heard TGWTG explained. Which is kind of sad because you have a feeling that with most of these people they truly want to do something more than the usual but are never given a fair chance to because if they take a risk their fans can and will turn on them. Though you could argue that James Rolfe has been evolving more and more as the years go by to much more success than anyone on TGWTG but, he knew how to do it without pissing people off by easing into it. Subtlety and TGWTG dont mix I've noticed.

Initially, I thought the CA contributors were people my age trying to take control of their lives. That early 20s period wasn't the best for me as I was still trying to find my way in the world, and I looked at them and thought "Man that's cool they were able to do that and kind of take control of their own destinies and make a living off of this"

Now I realize how wrong I was and see it as a self imposed Neverland where they shielded themselves from the real world rather than confront it and try to better themselves.

The end result speaks for itself.

I look at the Spoonys, the Lupas, the Linkaras, and all the rest and go "Man, we can shit on The Walkers and Michaud and they deserve it...but fuck, they actually had to put up with these people behind the scenes. What was that hell like?"

James is also one of the few people who realises that your private life should be kept private. Not getting involved in drama reduces the toxicity of the fanbase, who in turn will be more open to new ideas.

Kirk's friend at TGWTG was Mike Ellis. Holly Brown accused Mike of sexual harassment and he was immediately fired by the Walkers. After seeing what a compulsive liar she is on Twitter, plus seeing what she looks like (300lb hambeast), I've come to doubt that this ever actually happened.

This is better fit for the NC thread, but the CTC document alleged that Mike Ellis was mentally unstable and he concerned them enough for Doug and a few other producers to bodyguard Holly on one occasion, which led to Doug almost macing himself when he tested his pepper spray.

I'd never heard anything about Ellis before or since and there's zero information on him anywhere.

The Walker Bros. believed her completely and tried in their own dorky way to protect her from what they thought was a real threat. Holly later decided to mock them for it during #CTC. It's just one more piece of evidence that IMHO she's a two-faced POS and deserved her firing.
