You're right, it's a huge trainwreck of a situation and he's an idiot who should have known better. I guess my feeling of pity here is similar to the pity I feel when I see nasty hoarder dens or basement/crawlspace dwellings. Depending on the scarring and how much he took off himself when he did it / what damage he caused to the area.
