It probably depends a lot on the individual pill. Some are able to be taken in half pill form no problem, so I don't think crushing them would be a big deal. But others have coatings to protect the medication so that it's released in the right stage of digestion and at the correct rate.

But it sounds like she has problems actually swallowing the pill, like it's too large to get down.
