"Zero Punctuation" and "Dev Diary" by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw - The only thing worth watching on The Escapist

Yet here you are every week listening to the dude.

He's never claimed to be apolitical, nor has he ever sucked his own cock about adhering to review structures. Yahtzee's always been clear that ZP is an opinion piece.

Every week? Hardly, I pretty much forgot about him, until I saw his topic here suddenly light up with life.

Okay, so ZP is supposed to be a opinion piece, color me crazy but I think people usually watch the guy to talk about video games, or occassionally whine about the evil triple A companies an sucking off indies, not to hear him for his political views.

It was a fairly minor part of the video, dude. The criticism I would make is not that he's being political, but he's being political on top of defending an American military occupation just to make fun of Trump. That's the kind of jingoism he'd go after in previous videos. None of this has to do with politics, it has to do with the fact that Yahtzee constantly feels like he has to cleverly snark, when he really should be axing snarks that don't make any sense when you think about them beyond being funny snarks.

Then stop listening to him, dummy. You're one of the most active posters in this thread, and were the first to respond to his CoD review being posted.

Well, sort of he does seem to love throwing such humor around and probably assumes it makes him come off as witty. Like say with Mafia 3, he started out with a bunch of insults for black people an then goes "But Trump is more racist guys", the odd thing he barely goes after the dem side. Quite frankly, if one counts in his modern stuff he only made fun of dems 3-4 times at best.

Well, I was more curious about the Disco Elysium part of the review, just him trying to put political snark...humor is where I groan cause its the same shit again.

I think he's referring to the Americans withdrawing due to a dictator (which is definitely an odd reading of the situation) and orange cheeto joke.

War is a good thing in "Orange Man Bad" 2019.

I didn't care for the joke because not only did he make pretty much the same joke the week before and it was the stock standard Trump joke that got old 6 months before he was elected. I expect better from Yahtzee. Yes, I consider jokes about masturbating over odd things better than Trump jokes.

Yahtzee's politics are more annoying than most considering how he wedges them into his show about video game reviews, since it's the only platform where anyone listens to him. Actually, he's kind of an anomaly as far as e-celebs go. He's made it clear from the start that he doesn't interact with fans -AT ALL-, never did live convention coverage until this year, didn't do photos with fans because muh anxiety, and the tiny bit of streaming and collaborating he's done throughout his career seems to be done more out of a sense of obligation than anything. Though I'll admit, I haven't ever watched one of his post-ZP streams, so I'm not sure if he interacts with fans there. A long long time ago when ZP was still very new, I emailed him about thoughts on Earthbound, and didn't hear back at all. He's always had that email address in his videos, though nothing more ever seems to come from it than "you knobgoblins won't stop emailing me about (Nintendo game) so I guess I gotta do it to shut you faggots up".

But at least depicting Trump as a pile of Cheetos for a second isn't as bad as some of the butthurt tears he went on in early '17. Christ Almighty, his Switch + BotW video was unwatchable considering how much impotent rage he had built up. Politics certainly don't mesh with how well his videos age, either, considering how things get portrayed like nuclear war could start at any minute because a republican somewhere sneezed, only to be forgotten the next day. Zero Punctuation really does age well, and it's often the only way I actually remember random games. Nobody's cared about Brink since maybe a month after release, but the ZP on it is still perfectly watchable and really captures the experience well:

Though his shtick of reviewing so many random indie games I'd never otherwise know about is kind of a two-edged sword. On one hand, it keeps the variety going, but on the other, it's a little disappointing when he passes up something unique that seems ripe to work with. I'd like for him to have reviewed one of the Rhythm Heaven games, and three have been released in the lifespan of ZP, but he always seems to avoid the smaller Nintendo franchises. Hell, he didn't even acknowledge the Vita at all, with not a single game ever getting a review. I think he avoided Pokemon Go, too.

The first segment was genuinely weak, the game does have nicer Russians and they're straight up carry overs from the original Modern Warfare. He should have mentioned the campaign missions that were a step above usual Call of Duty fare too.

It isnt hard when Ubisoft dropped their balls and gave us the turds that is siege and Breakpoint. All Infinity Ward was surgically graft Patriot's balls from their corpse and go prattle about how deeply political the games are including the wonderful scene where you shove a dad with a bomb vest off the bridge

Not to sure that he getting more bitter by the day
YouTube comments are interesting thought

His new video that just uploaded on the Escapist site is basically a blow-by-blow recount of games released this year that he decided that he couldn't make a full review about on their own. In his opinion, most of them are perfectly serviceable but not enough to bring him to a boil for one reason or another.

The most notable thing about it is that he seems to be sick of the Soulslike genre at this point (though to be fair, 2019 seems to be the year of the Soulslike boom), spending the first half of the video mostly just counting them off.

As for that one game where he stopped playing after reaching this example of gleefully shameless design:

I played Shen-Mooey 1 when it was new and never noticed that the girl on the cover wasn't even in the game until that review

Why does he keep calling it "Shen-Mooey"? The Katakana on the cover outright shows that it ends in a "muu" sound. Maybe Yahtzee secretly hates the Japanese because he's a closet racist who wants to drop another nuke on them because they don't freak out and set themselves on fire when someone utters the word "faggot" out loud.

I'd tell Yahtzee that maybe he shouldn't play anime games if he doesn't enjoy anime styles but then I guess he'd have nothing to prove what an upstanding progressive moral guardian who hates tits and loves mentally ill fat guys in wigs

I’ve played some of his dev diary games, they’re awesome. I loved The Button That Ruins Everything, the ending was hilarious.

The weird part is if I'm not mistaken the girl appears at the end of Shenmue 2. In the last three hours of that game, the players are introduced to her and whatnot. But, here's what really bugs me about this review not only it shows how much of a huge hipster Yahztee is, he honestly missed a chance to give the game better criticism. There are legit things one can critique this game for, how for example the combat barely changed from what was in Shenmue 1, how the main story barely progresses and the characters barely change during all this, hell the main bad guy gets a screen time of like 5 mins while the new baddie gets at best 10 mins. How there's a missing 3rd location, how you repeat stuff from the 1st zone in the 2nd.

lol quit giving him headspace

Shamelessly political, yes. But when Yahtzee's starts shoving his opinion on real life politics (mostly left wing ones it seems), that's where it starts getting annoying.

He's always made passing references to politics, although it tended to be either Australian or British. Is a single throwaway line really that triggering for you?

Single throwaway line? He had so many "throwaway lines" since 2017 that Im pretty sure if there was a limit, he officially went over it

The 'throwaway line' was in reference to the most recent video, apology for the bad phrasing. He has made many throwaway lines in his videos referencing British, Australian and American politics. I don't really care about them (beyond a lot of them being low hanging fruit type jokes) because he's not making it the meat of his video.

If the ZP videos were 4 minute proselytizing rants and approximately 1 minute of a game review, I'd see your point. But Yahtzee has always made jabs at political targets, and it isn't really anything new.
