It's more so the impressionable nature bit of being a fan. The degree of impressionability varies greatly between person to person. A lot of people look up to these VAs because, be it nostalgia, admiration, etc. Think of it like say when one has become a fan for say a singer, artist, writer, etc. Their work as made an impression on them and has in most cases left a positive impact on them.
Yeah, a little sappy, and in no way excusing or justifying this extreme reaction. Monica seems like the definition of "Never get to know your heroes". With the opposite of this definition being Vic.
