US "The Squad" Megathread - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib Derangement Syndrome

I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

Did Trump critic Rep. Rashida Tlaib violate campaign finance laws and ethics rules?

"Text messages and emails between Tlaib and her campaign staff show that throughout her campaign she repeatedly asked her campaign for money to cover personal expenses like “car maintenance, child care and other necessities.”

At one point, Tlaib asked her campaign to give her $2,000 every two weeks. Between May 7 and Nov. 16, 2018, it did so. Then, on Dec. 1, 2018, it paid her $15,500.

In total, Tlaib’s campaign gave her $45,000 over seven months.

Federal campaign finance law (52 U.S.C. §30114(b)) prohibits the use of campaign funds for personal use. The law, including the regulations promulgated by the Federal Election Commission, defines “personal use” very broadly."

Most notably, Ocasio-Cortez has railed against private equity firms that led leveraged buyouts of retailers that resulted in numerous bankruptcies, like Toys R Us and Sports Authority.

Wait.........what? Was she just barking at the customers of the bar that didn't want to hear her screeching anyway?

Ilhan Omar 'Qatari asset,' Florida court hears
https://jpost.com/American-Politics/Ilhan-Omar-working-for-Qatar-Florida-court-hears-609003 (http://archive.vn/1ZVxb)

The Democratic Congresswoman is said to have passed information to Qatar which was subsequently handed along to Iran.

Ilhan Omar was recruited by a foreign government, received funding from a foreign government, and passed sensitive information through intermediates to Iran, a Florida court has been told.

The claims came during testimony by Kuwati-born Canadian businessman Alan Bender, who was giving evidence in the trial of Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani. The emir's brother stands accused of ordering his American bodyguard to murder two people, and of holding an American citizen hostage. His deposition, obtained by Al Arabiya English, was authenticated by the attorney for the plaintiffs, according to the publication.

Speaking from Toronto by video link, Bender told the Florida District Court that he met with Qatar’s Secretary to the Emir for Security Affairs Mohammad bin Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Masnad and two other senior Qatari officials.

According to his sworn deposition, the three officials told him: “If it wasn't for our cash, Ilhan Omar would be just another black Somali refugee in America collecting welfare and serving tables on weekends."

Bender testified that the officials asked him to recruit American politicians and journalists as Qatari assets, and that when he objected, was told that several prominent figures were already on the payroll. US Congresswoman Omar was described as the "jewel in the crown," he said.

Qatar “recruited Ilhan Omar from even way before she thought about becoming a government official. […] They groomed her and arranged the foundation, the grounds, for her to get into politics way before she even showed interest. They convinced her,” he added.

The deposition shows he further told the court that, during a 2017 meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Omar swore allegiance to him. At the time she was a junior state representative in Minnesota.

Omar was said to also have passed information to Qatar which was subsequently handed along to Iran, and was actively involved in recruiting other American politicians to likewise work for Qatar, Bender testified.

“The best thing money can buy are American officials because they are the cheapest of the cheapest costing officials in the world,” the Qatari officials were said to have told him.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Congresswoman Omar told The Jerusalem Post "Since the day she was elected, Saudi Arabian trolls and mouthpieces have targeted Rep. Omar with misinformation and conspiracy theories."

"The latest outlandishly absurd story from a Saudi-funded media outlet is of course false and only the latest in that trend," they said. "The only people Rep. Omar represents in Washington are the people of Minnesota’s 5th District. She will continue to speak out against human rights violations around the world—whether it is war crimes in Yemen or the caging of children at our border—regardless of who commits them."

Omar has already been found by the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board to have broken campaign finance rules, by improperly using campaign money for out-of-state travel while a state representative. Conservative group Judicial Watch has also called on the House Ethics Committee to investigate Omar for alleged offenses, including immigration fraud. But these claims go much further.

Omar was one of 107 House Democrats who co-signed a letter Thursday, calling on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to reverse his announcement on the legality of West Bank settlements. The signatories claimed such a move "severely damaged prospects for peace" in the region.

If this is true, they couldn't have picked a worse candidate. They should have picked someone who could show up to work wearing an American flag as a headscarf and keep her mouth shut long enough to get shit done behind the scenes. Not someone who sticks her neck out for jihadis and refers to 9/11 as "some people did something."

I can only imagine some imam in Qatar is saying "This is why we treat women the way we do. It's for a reason!"

It's more alarming that this is apparently effective than it is that it's happening. I don't fault the Congresswoman for looking for advice, but I do wish that she would have been slightly more prudent in her selection of sources.

NYers say Cuomo got ‘played’ by AOC in failed Amazon deal
cuomo-aoc.jpg

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was deluged with hate mail following the collapse of his $3 billion deal to build a giant Amazon headquarters in Queens — with many of the missives mocking the fact he’d been bested by freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, The Post has learned.

“You got outsmarted by a bartender … thanks,” Patricia Kaufman scolded the three-term governor, noting the 29-year-old socialist firebrand’s former occupation.

Her email is just one of some 2,200 correspondences to the governor about the Amazon deal that The Post obtained through a Freedom of Information Request.

“What a dysfunctional scenario to unfold under your watch. AOC has played you swiftly. WOW!” David Sorbellini wrote Cuomo.

Anne Catalano told the governor that his Democratic Party “has lost its mind.”

“Seriously? We lost AMAZON’S headquarters?!! Are you all so afraid of AOC and screaming, stupid protestors who don’t understand Economics 101??? Is she so intimidating that you and [Mayor] De Blasio couldn’t get this done? SHAME ON YOU!!!!” she wrote.

Stephen Lavery opined how “that little snot nose trashed your big deal,” then took a shot at Cuomo’s masculinity.

“I guess we know who wears the pants in New York now. Especially in the Democratic Party,” he wrote.

The furious messages comprise a tiny slice of around 1,500 emails and letters that Cuomo’s office received following Amazon’s abrupt, Feb. 14 cancellation of plans to build a corporate campus in Long Island City. The other 700 or so were sent to the governor after the deal was announced in November 2018.

Amazon blamed its surprise delivery of the Valentine’s Day disappointment on unexpected opposition to the $3 billion worth of incentives that Cuomo and de Blasio offered in a secret deal in exchange for the promise of more than 25,000 jobs.

“A number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward,” Amazon said at the time.

The online retail giant didn’t name names, but Ocasio-Cortez, who reps parts of Queens and The Bronx, was among the fiercest critics of its deal.

In addition to bashing Cuomo for failing to tamp down Ocasio-Cortez’s outspoken resistance, other writers told Cuomo they planned to flee New York over the development debacle.

“Bye, Bye. Me and My entire extended family are now on our way out of your state to live in Tennessee,” William Parker wrote.

“It has nothing to do with the weather!!!!!!!!! It’s all to do with you. Loser!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Chris Vail, who said he lives in the Finger Lakes region upstate, said he was going to relocate to North Carolina, South Carolina or Florida.

“Your failure to secure Amazon as a new corporation to do business in the state is laughable and a testament to political incompetence,” Vail wrote.

“You and all the other NYS political self- serving hacks are an embarrassment. Looking forward to putting you and NY in my rear view mirror!”

Several abortion opponents even suggested the Amazon fiasco was God’s way of punishing Cuomo for signing a February bill that codified the Roe v. Wade decision into state law.

That move came in response to President Trump’s successful nomination of two conservative judges — Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh — to the US Supreme Court.

“God works in mysterious ways,” wrote Lorraine DeDonato of Oregon.

“So thrilled to hear Amazon is not bringing jobs into New York. Since you are a supporter of late term abortion and the monies from Planned Parenthood and George Soros control you, you got what you deserve.”

Lorim Kerim also told Cuomo, “Surely you realize God will not be mocked.”

Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi tried to exonerate Cuomo by shifting the blame to the elected officials that were against Amazon’s plan, who in addition to Ocasio-Cortez included state Sen. Mike Gianaris (D-Long Island City).

“There is no doubt losing Amazon was a major political blunder by opposing officials and pure pandering at the expense of responsible governing,” Azzopardi said.

A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez declined to comment.

I can't wait to see Ilhan Omar being expelled from the House. Yes, she should be outright expelled from the House of Representatives.

If this is true, that's considered treason and under scrutiny for foreign influence.

Some people did something...

I think Omar is going to get got(has there been a female prisoner at Gitmo? Maybe another first she can claim!). She's under investigation for shady financial shit on two counts. She has the brother-marriage hanging over her head. She has the rumor(fact?) that her father may have been a war criminal. Now this? If this is true she's done. She doesn't have the clout to shield herself and no one is laying on a sword for this bitch. She's run her mouth too often about the wrong things. Maybe Pelosi will try but I think that would be a horrific decision on her part--so she probably will!

The usual suspects in media may try to defend her or discredit the allegations but they seem to have been backing away from the squad recently.

Trump needs to use this to his full advantage. Get an investigation going into her and then scrutinize her election with a flea comb. She didn't get into office alone. Her co-conspirators all need to be found and dealt with. Might also be a good idea to use this to try to investigate every single refugee Obama brought into this country under cover of night.

I'm going to be honest, AOC has done two things right so far: be against giving Amazon more $$$ and be on Taylor Swift's side against Big Machine

The deal Cuomo had worked out wasn't even giving Amazon money, it was agreeing to tax them slightly less should they agree to build HQ2 in Queens.
Then AOC ran around screeching about all the good that could be done with that money as if the government was handing a sack of cash to Bezos instead of agreeing to accept a slightly smaller sack from him in the first place for more overall money in the city in general.
And then Bezos shrugged and took his sack of money to DC and she gloated as if she'd done anything to actually help the NYC government besides deprive it of a good revenue stream.

Might also be a good idea to use this to try to investigate every single refugee Obama brought into this country under cover of night.
is it the end times for AOC? or will the ineptitude of the media say "oy vey anti semitism!!!" and won't get anywhere due to MSM outcry.

Taylor Swift should be thankful for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In fact, Swift ought to take lessons from her because Ocasio-Cortez stole an entire political party from Cenk Uygur. Meanwhile Swift is getting trolled by random dudebros like Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta.

It's just difficult to respect a supposed genius who gets routinely demolished by someone named Scooter.

As for the Amazon deal I don't know what the fuck she was thinking. That is going to hang over her head for years.

AOC raised most money among House Dems for reelection campaign

US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raked in more money for her reelection campaign in the last fundraising quarter than any other House Democrat — including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, records show.

AOC, a Democratic socialist who reps parts of the Bronx and Queens, raised $1.42 million between July 1 through Sept. 30, followed by House impeachment czarand US Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who netted $1.26 million, and House Speaker Pelosi (D-Calif.), who received $1.145 million.

The lion’s share of AOC’s donations, $1.1 million, were under $200.

Political observers told The Post it is unprecedented for a rookie representative in office for less than a year to out-raise powerful veteran leaders such as Pelosi and Schiff.

All three pols are up for reelection in 2020, with Ocasio-Cortez preparing for a Democratic primary in June from, among others, Bronx Councilman Fernando Cabrera.

“This is very rare, unique — I can’t recall anyone raising this much money during the first year in office,” political consultant George Arzt said.

“AOC is a celebrity who gained attention from people across the country, and many on the left support her.”

Brendan Quinn of the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks fundraising, agreed that AOC’s fundraising juggernaut is unusual for a rookie.

He called it a testament to her popularity and tremendous name recognition, saying, “She’s become iconic.”

As for the rest of the New York House delegation, Brooklyn Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, for example, raised $499,739 during the same period.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan-Brooklyn), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, raised $192,284 for the quarter and $860,037 since January.

AOC leading GOP challengers by nearly $500K in campaign cash

GOP donors have collectively given $1 million to the five...

Bronx Rep. Eliot Engel, who is facing a primary, raised $317,530 for the third quarter.

Her rookie sidekick, Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, raised $722,212.

There were a few Republicans who raised more than AOC.

Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, the House GOP minority whip, raised $3.45 million.

California Rep. Devin Nunes, the former House GOP Intelligence Committee chair, garnered $2.6 million in donations, and House GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, $1.6 million.

AOC has raised the sixth most donations since January among all House members — trailing only Scalise, Nunes, McCarthy, Schiff and Pelosi.

Pelosi is still a fund-raising powerhouse, with her Nancy Pelosi Victory Fund, used to elect House Democrats, raising $11.1 million since January, including $2.7 million in the third quarter.

The Post previously reported that AOC’s fundraising dwarfs all of her potential GOP challengers.
