Connor, I'm just going to say this directly to you:

Don't tell us, do it. You need to sit down and do something for yourself and for no one else. At the end of the day whose face do you see in the mirror? It's only you and you're the only one who lives or dies by your own actions.

You're afraid of failure, trust me, I absolutely understand that. Want me to be honest with you? I'm terrified myself. I'm getting laid off in the imminent future and live by myself. I have no one to lean on for help and I'm terrified. More than that I'm terrified of having to look for another job because I hate the thought of screwing up. Hearing "no thanks" when it comes to knowing a yes or no is the determining factor on whether I'll be able to survive is an option no one should have to deal with. I've told you this before but I'll say it again: I get so scared of screwing up at interviews that I've up and walked away from them. And not just one. Many.

But for me, and for you, there's hope. With each failure I'm one step closer to finding what I'm going to do. When I do get something that can replace and support me, it'll make that win so much greater.

Accomplish something for yourself. We're not demanding big steps, little steps may seem like nothing but when you put them together you'll have traveled a farther distance and with greater skill. Start today, not tomorrow.

What can you accomplish today before midnight? Ask yourself this, and I bet you'll have tons of answers.

I've considered talking to my parents about getting a new therapist. I've been seeing him since 2009 and I've made very little progress.
Can you honestly say you've told him everything and been trying to make progress? Because he won't be able to do shit unless you want him to. He's supposed to be a safe person for you to go to, so you need to let him in. When it comes right down to it, he works for you, not your parents.

With therapy, you get what you put into it. If you see another therapist and things aren't working out, it might be time for an attitude adjustment.

If you want to do that short story back-and-forth, let me know. We can post it to the forums, even.

Connor, if you don't do anything all day, then pick up a book and read it. I mean actually sit down and read it cover to cover. The only thing you have to lose is that you don't like it. In which case you go to the library and get another book and try again. And keep trying until you find something you like.

And don't just limit yourself to cynical, dark stories either. Open your mind to many different genres of books. You'll be much happier.

This. Start with some Terry Pratchett. I guarantee that you'll be better off for having done so.

Have you ever read The Princess Bride? To this day I love reading that book cover-to-cover.

I could finish a plot outline or two. I could write a chapter, or half of a short story. I could participate in a Round Robin with @Meowthkip . I could read several chapters in a novel. I could work on my art skills.
Good start. Now pick one. Just one for now. (If I was you, I'd go for the round robin with @Meowthkip, she's stellar.)

Good for you, you thought of tons of things that you can accomplish tonight.

Choose one right now and start it. Get yourself a calendar and write down your goal for the day. Put it on the inside of your bedroom door so you have to see it as you leave your room. Each morning you're going to wake up and see that you have a plan that needs to get doing and you're going to do it.

If you keep doing that I guarantee you within a month you're going to feel so much better about yourself.

Dude, you told us you've only been seeing him a year.

Maybe talk about your pathological lying.

I've been going to therapy for years. He's a nice, decent guy, I guess.

^
I think this is the first time he mentioned it, so I don't believe he was lying. He also used his Giftorcurse account to complain about how that therapist was "only in it for the money", so it's probably been longer than a year.

Send me a convo invite if you're serious. This should be fun.

@Connor, in the past 10 minutes (between refreshing the page and replying), I wrote just over 100 words about a Khajiit talking to a book.

Dear Diary,

Hello! My name is Inigo. It is nice to meet you! I decided to purchase you from Bits and Pieces because I find writing to be a calming exercise, and you seemed like a good book in which to do so. My previous attempts at journaling didn’t go so well; skooma can make it hard to concentrate. But as I understand it, diaries are very different from journals. Journals are meant to be straightforward records of events, whereas diaries are meant to be more personal, a reflection on one’s thoughts and feelings at a given moment in time. So, perhaps I will have better luck with you. I hope so!

Yeah, it's crap, but it's something. Try this right now: set a timer for 10 minutes, and then write anything. Anything at all. I bet you can write more than 100 words in that time, and it'll likely be better than mine. Give it a shot!
