Presumably he believes that the least obvious interpretation is always the most profound, an idea accepted by all pretend smart people.
I’d say it’s more of thinking that he’s got the opinion that nobody has, and that’s mind blowing to people. I wouldn’t call him a pseudo intellectual like Lindsay Ellis, but he feels his opinion holds weight in the YouTube movie community.

It's not by any means and I'll give him credit that the film has managed to be have an infinite number of ways to interpret it.

...But in typical Doug fashion, he also completely misses the underlying point of the movie and instead pulls a message out of his ass. The main, definitive point of the movie was to 1.) Have compassion for broken, mentally ill people, 2.) Understand the hypocrisy and craziness of society/the media/etc., and 3.) Show Arthur's fall from grace in how Gotham itself created a monster.

Doug does this all the time. Even if he's right on one of the many interpretations of a film, he always picks the most random ones to follow. For example, he thought that Grave of the Fireflies was about one's pride overtaking reason to the point of harming loved ones when the movie is VERY on the nose about how destructive war is on innocence and the lives of civilians living in WW2 Japan.

He does this shit all the time and it annoys me.
It's because he has no grasp on the concept of historical context, and probably doesn't research his history at all. It's the same for his review of The Wall. He doesn't realize the background for it was Roger Waters' childhood. Everything must conform to modern standards, or at least Doug's blinkered ones.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Reminds me of people who joke about Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”.

@RomanesEuntDomus Gonna have to update my own post from a few days ago; After searching around for that infamous Count Jackula vid where he told his JewWario story, I finally remembered where I had heard about it in the first place. Part of it was a fragment of Social Injustice Warrior's vid about JW, namely the first part of Jackula's tale where the woman told her horrifying experience with Justin. The second part where he himself runs into JW in the corridor right after he came out of the room, I'm afraid, truly is lost - and so's the Vulpix doll thing.

Bennett the Sage has a way better video on Grave of the Fireflies where he discusses the historical context, the book it's loosely based on, how the director doesn't see it as an anti-war film despite that being the popular interpretation in the West, and how Sage personally feels it's propaganda aimed at the children of Japanese who lived through WW2 because the two main kids are more constructs to make you sad than actual characters.

So many former CA creators do at least a little research into what they're discussing, but Doug still just latches on to whatever stupid interpretation he had on a first watch and looks into it no further.

I can see points in both videos. Chojin is right that Sage is wrong in how he reads how the film builds atmosphere, how it shows the horror of war and how surreal day to day life is for normal people in a country under attack. And he was wrong about the short story. And the anti-war quote.

However I have always felt the film is detached and voyeuristic, almost romanticizing the suffering of the kids. I don’t feel the audience is meant to relate to Seita and see things from his point of view. Unlike the similar film Barefoot Gen which is much more intimate and involved with the characters.

And of course they both have to point out the director did intend to preach to the youth culture of the 80’s in a sort of “You damn kids don’t know how good you’ve got it” way.

I think literally the only problem I have with the rebuttal is the attitude of "Im gonna be OVERLY angry and spiteful to assert how right I am." I have no problem with someone shooting Bennet down but when you try and make your entire persona "lol im such an asshole and I know it so im free from critique" it just becomes seriously grating. Its not about what you say its how ya say it.

TBH since last or two years ago his shtick with Disneycember has been "whatever I feel like", since Disney has gotten so huge in the years and he's run out of animated classics to review.

First Disneycember, 2011 - The animated classics
2, 2012- Pixar and some computer animated films he didn't touch
2013- the live action films (I think?)
2014- Studio Ghibli and extra
2015- Marvel and Star Wars
2016- the Disney sequels
2017- Disney channel I think?
2018- Anything else that was missing

How is it that in the Disneycember vid all the videos suggested are those weird CGI kids videos that are popular on youtube?
