I think Erica and Stan seem like good people (so not disputing that) but I think the disconnect is more that they are out of things and no longer give a shit about the scene. If you look at the ANN (freaking ANN of all people) thread I linked, the scene was different 10 years ago. To be fair, this is also society at large, not just anime conventions, but that's what some people are doing.

I'll also note that MANY anime convention runner said (when asked, publicly) whether it was good to invite Vic to a con, that he was a good guest and they had great experiences with him at their convention. In 2013, tangentially related (Vic not named personally) you had con runners bitching about religious prosletization after Sami Harte got em going.

What is their circlejerk? Who’s in it? All I’ve heard is that they’ve been #KV and broadcasting Vic’s supposed L’s because they don’t want to lose their Funimation access.

It's the whole access media thing which you see all over entertainment media. It's hard to replace ANN because they're in deep with Funimation, Crunchyroll, and other licensors which gives them early access to writing articles about that shit. And anything which did replace ANN would inevitably become like ANN, that is, little more than a glorified marketing machine whose employees call themselves journalists instead of marketers. The only way around it would be to somehow be able to receive press releases (and translate them) from Japanese studios and such which means you become their marketing arm.

They're all buddy buddy with the voice actors, they think they've got some power because of it.

TL;DR glorified groupies in leadership positions who abuse that power and influence to keep control of the convention scene.
But it's made up of convention runners, long time volunteers, a few consluts and exclusive clubs of cosplayers who go to these cons and win their money prizes each time, people who travel the nation just to meet up with their "friends" and contribute absolutely nothing of value to the convention scene beyond their holier than thou attitudes.

Look at what Manjaw is trying to do. That controlling attitude isn't a new thing, it's just that the people who do it are a little more discreet with who they exclude and how they execute blacklisting people.

Ironically the majority of these cons claim to be nonprofit which is a big ol lie in some cases.

But yeah, Metrocon was one of the cons that was a part of their little bullshit party for a hot minute there. At least when I was actively attending cons (I stopped in 2016 because I'm over it, been attending cons since about 2007 and family who have attended cons as a whole as far back as the 80s and 90s), Metrocon was always one of "those cons" where there was a specific group of volunteers and leadership that were insufferable assholes.

I like the people who attended because of their love for the material and not their love of the status. I remember when I was a kid someone told me that people like those losers act the way they do because they were the bullied nerds and now they've in turn become the bullies.

Besides their databases being quite useful, I often see them used for news stories from those that either don't know enough Japanese to read the original sources or are too scared to head over to /a/ where a kind anon will translate news as soon as it leaks in between shitposting. Early chapter releases, news of series beginning or ending, announcements of new anime projects, sales, and miscellaneous scandals spread to /a/ fast which don't give people in the know much reason to touch ANN. For places like r/anime I've noticed that ANN gets taken as the "official source" to be trusted even when something has already been announced on places like twitter or japanese news sites. Announcements off twitter are starting to see more use but I find just browsing /a/ a lot better for keeping up to date with anime related things.

Besides the odd answerman I don't thing anyone besides the people on the ANN forums read any of their opinion pieces, most people don't care what these nobodies think and would rather see what their favorite anituber thinks. Anitubers are a whole other pile of cancer, with the vast majority being straight garbage, very rarely do I find any that I actually like to watch.

So I guess that's it for this arc. It was werid one. I felt like the pacing was to fast, it needed to slow down, and there wasn't any real character development I felt. Ty was a bit over hyped but still a likeable character. Never really got to know Amazons that much, I hope we can see them more next arc. I found that Johnson proved to be a very likable villain even though he's working for a literal shit. Although it was funny seeing lemonie fuck up, come up with new excuses, and show us his incompetents, I wish he could put up more of a fight, be an actual challenger for ty and his team instead of getting lucky and having the judge just give them the win so easily. The two new characters , Martinez and hsu, are great, I think they are fantastic, though I wish they there during tcpa to see if the story could have changed or not. The defendant's stayed true to the character's, being piles of shit. The sides stories were intresting, like R. Greg bankruptcy, still waiting to find out about that, and more info of wife beater ron soye. I do hope the get ride of the non important characters like emmet , manjaw, shane, ect.
The twist of stan and erica is always great, one of my favorite parts.
And the Sharron part at the end through me off, I was not expecting that artical.
She really showed which side she was on until the end. Wonder what other twists we'll get in the next arc.
I think my highlights for this arc were, vic going up and testifying, Martinez taking down lemonhead when he tried to depose slatosh and ty, and the literal dumpster fire that was lemonhead's slideshow.
Its gonna be a while till the appeals arc, hopefully it ends well

I can probably tell you why and it is just a theory. Josh knows Vic would not do anything to him or encourage anything to happen to him, but fans and supprters are completely different. Apple boy knows many of vics fans and the supporters(yes I do classify them differently) were going to be there and he was afraid of confrontation. He is a pussy that knows he has alienated most of his fans too. In fact that is probably what many of the VA's cancelling because of vics appearance are probably truly worried about(just easier to demonize vic for them)
