Death Stranding - Hideous Kojumbo does it again

I feel like you're both saying nearly the exact same thing, just with less words or more words. Personally, this shit can be said succinctly and without flowery discussions about art: Kojima made a mediocre game. That's fine, it happens.
Yeah I am just going to sit in the mud and enjoy this game. Hell I enjoyed the game and am hoping for another map in DLC it’s quite fun and as Sargon once said “SARGON NEED MORE DOPAMINE” But with boxes.

I had a lot of fun with it so far. I can certainly see issues people would have with the game especially early on, or why people with a hate boner for Kojima wouldn't be down. I liked the world and building zipline networks that can lead to everywhere. Getting through to the main map is something I would definitely recommend doing asap because there's nothing going on in the area you start in.

The bosses were lame though, except for the Higgs fight. It would also be nice if you could just leave BB in your quarters to not hear it cry whenever you magically make big impacts, I'm tired of having to piss to make it stop (p sure soothing takes longer). There was also quite a bit of jank with vehicles, transitioning from different heights like falling 100+ meters even though you clearly landed on a flat surface, or slightly bumping into a wall and completely fucking up all of your cargo and making BB cry. Also why can't I honk my horn or listen to the music I unlock, if its in there somewhere make it a feature everywhere.

Well I finally beat it.

I enjoyed the story a lot. It wrapped up pretty nicely at the end I thought, for a Kojima story anyway. Definitely not story of the decade or anything but I recognized what it was going for. At least it tried something new I guess.

By the end, the fighting mechanics were pretty fun too. Fighting MULEs and BTs with the wide variety of weapons surprisingly offered a fair amount depth. They definitely could have done more with MULEs (instances of them ambushing you on the road a la Red Dead Redemption 2, or attacking prepper outposts, or something more coordinated than just standing around in a field all day). Ordinary BTs were just an annoyance by the end, but the summoned minibosses were pretty fun to fight, just wish there were more variety there. I like that you go from running from the spoopy ghosts, to intentionally summoning the big bads so you can farm them for resources. Power progression feels very natural.

Working with the unseen larger community to develop the road works, bridges and zipline systems to go to nearly every where on the map was a huge time sink. Climbing up huge mountains in the middle of a blizzard, can't fucking see shit plus goddamn ghosts, all to plant a zipline anchor, and then start the trek to the next mountain top to connect it, figuring out where the fuck I am and where I need to be to continue the run. I could probably play a game just based on this mechanic. The exploration was wonderful, I really hope they do more with this engine (same one used for horizonal zero dawn) because it's gorgeous, and stable, the entire game I experienced 2 crashes.

I like how after you beat it, you can continue messing around, though I don't think I will. I did everything I wanted to do in the game before the end, took me 110 hours according to the game timer. Roads all built, tech all researched, ziplines to everywhere, almost every prepper at 5/5 stars. Fighting MULEs and BTs doesn't have enough replayability.

All in all, I liked it a lot. Not my game of year but definitely worth the price of admission. I could see why most people won't like this game but unfortunately it's not really a game you can gauge just by watching it, because the atmosphere is about 90% of the draw (for me). Even an hour and a half in I didn't think I was going to finish it because the gameplay wasn't doing much for me. But when Episode 3 opened up a few hours into the game, I completely changed my opinion. I ending up finishing it and I rarely finish single player games.

If you're curious about it I would wait til it's on sale, just get to episode 3 before you decide you don't like it. It's got a lot of flaws for sure (I agree with almost all the cons people list about this game) but I think the overall experience makes up for them. At the end of the day it's nice to see an interesting, new IP. I hope Kojima manages to shit out more stand alone story based games, hopefully more coherent ones with less blatant advertisement.

Is the game worth getting or watching online?
I’d say maybe watch a LP of the first couple hours and then make a decision. This isn’t a game for everyone, and your enjoyment of the game will depend on how you feel about treking from one spot to the next, and then building ways to circumvent the dangers and make it easier for other players.

>Over 5 hours video
Uh... how much of it do I need to watch to get an idea if I'm interested? I do want to watch but that's a bit intimidating even for me

Try skipping a few hours in. A lot of the start of the game is introducing you to concepts and such, so you’re not gonna see everything in full at the beginning, and it’s a long game if you’re doing everything and not just trying to steamroll through. Maybe an hour or so.

people say not to decide if you like it or not until the third chapter, that's quite a few hours in. A lot of the beginning of the game is the story told in Kojima's exposition style writing.

So far from what I have seen I am nearly done making my mind already, i still need to see the how combat works (I haven't played MGSV yet so I don't have that frame of reference) and to see how things change in chapter 3 onwards

Still haven't beaten the game (just beaten the main antagonist) but am damn close. Everyone here is right, once chapter 3 is hit or cleared, the game really opens up. Once you unlock a certain traveling device, what may have initially taken you 20 minutes to get to takes 30 seconds. Makes a lot the busywork/side-quests really easy to do and you really start to appreciate when other people online have built or helped you build certain things in the right place to help everyone else out, and vice versa.

Will say this, I have never gotten bored of playing this game, not like the previous "big" game I purchased (The Outer Worlds). IDK what it is, I'm not spending all my time shooting or beating the shit out people (though that happens sometimes). It really is "I need to get from point A to point B, how do I do that in the most efficient way possible?" and getting there, as well as planning for a route back (usually using said certain traveling device). It's got a nice mix of open world chapters where you go from point A to point B and these short, focused chapters with usually a good amount of action.

IDK, I just find there is just something about this game that I enjoy.

I think at the very least it's interesting to see a video game try to elicit an emotion we don't see tackled very often, or when it is tackled it's done very poorly. I found the deliberate invocations of loneliness through the game play mechanics pretty impressive, a nice break from all the high-adrenaline stuff that mostly saturates the market, and not overbearing to the point of unenjoyable like a lot of the indie titles that try to invoke a similar mood in the player, normally through a stapled on 'walk to next text log' that only exists to vomit more of their first-year creative writing final down your throat. It's also nice to see a 'walking simulator' where walking is actually the point of the game. While there are a lot of failures in trying to do new things with the medium, I think it's important to commend when something 'out of the norm' (see: not marketable) manages to do something off the beaten path and do it well.

According to this video, negative reviews are being deleted en masse and there seem to be bots popping up on MetaCritic with positive reviews.

The author also brings up an old article (now deleted) with Kojima in which the author of the interview heavily criticised his storytelling abilities. Konami's legal team became aware of the piece and had it taken down. The thing is, Kojima was vice president of the company at the time so it seems unlikely that he was unaware this move had been made.

I'm sure this won't make people want to mass neg rate in retaliation or anything.

Just beat it. Biggest complaint is that they will go to any length or camera angle to not show a naked penis in this game.

Your mileage will vary on whether or not this game is "for you". In my case it was right around the snow level where I finally got fed up with the game and made a beeline for the end. If nothing else this game has a density of things to talk about for years to come, and building things along with other players online was a unique experience I hope others get to enjoy for years to come.

I will now be listening to Low Roar exclusively for my next road trip. What will the mind of Kojima-san dream up next? Hope I don't have to wait three years to find out.
