While catching up (the Rebellion is in full force tonight) I saw that stuff about Didney meddling, when it comes to discussing the blame game. I thought I'd share what I've heard as the most likely interpretation.
Disney tends to go with a hands-off approach when it can. It's a 'don't fix what isn't broken' mentality, and it works fine when they acquire a living production company like Marvel.
Star Wars didn't quite start with this plan, because there was no production line at the time of writing. Word says that for Episode Seven, they set up a plan for the movies, with an emphasis on safe money-makers to pay back their losses. This is probably why they didn't take George's 'what is the force really?' plotlines. J.J. did this well, so Bob and Disney stepped back and let them do the rest.
Enter Rian Johnson. Kathleen Kennedy apparently let him deviate HARD from the script, because they agreed a lot on political stuff. The Last Jedi split the fanbase, and Solo flopped, causing Bob to rush forward and yank the reins out of their hands. It's around that time the rhetoric changed, and Bob became very explicit about having the final say in the Didney Trilogy.
Unrelated, but I imagine Colin Trevorrow jumped ship as soon as he could when he saw what RJ was doing. He made it very clear that Palps wasn't in his Episode 9 script.
