Filoni has been the weak spot of this series. His directing sucks, though, showing minor improvement.

That fight is so low-energy... SWING, SPIN, SWING, SWING, SPIN, SWING... [pause for (sexual?) tension]...SWING, SWING, SPIN SWING....<repeat> It’s not a duel where every blow matters, it’s not dazzling and exciting like wire-fu, it’s not even cheesy-but-still-fun choreographed strikes and flips... it’s just Rei and Kylo swinging baseball bats at one another and loud grunting. I swear to God there’s a solid 2-second opening where it looks like Daisy either pauses to take a breath or forgot what she was supposed to do next. Kylo could have carved her in half, but he stood there and waited for her like a gentleman... He had another opening when she slowly changed her fucking lightsaber to face behind her (nearly dropping it in the process).

Minor autism: The shots look like they’re framed to only show the blows and hide the movements being made. Which leads me to believe the actors A) weren’t given good direction on how to duel/weren’t very good at creating a convincing duel, or B) this scene was rushed and that was their best take in the time they had...

It's hard to tell if that's actually the thought. When "intersectional" people talk about the "performative nature" of gender and all sorts of other nonsense, I think that's actually a sort of accidental admission that they're putting on a show at all times. When is this type of person most in their element, after all? It's when they have something to complain about and to use to extract attention. At a certain point they probably grow into actually believing the performance, but I think it must start as them knowing that having a reason to say "fascist" means they hit the jackpot. They're happiest when they don't have their way.... yet.

For the record, how many agree that the problem wasn't inherently the idea of a female protagonist for the sequel trilogy, it was just done poorly?

For a third trilogy a female protagonist was a good idea just to differentiate it from the prior two trilogies if nothing else, the trouble is they forgot to make Rey an actual character.

Outside of people like those at One Autistic Gamer, no one cared about the MC having bobs. When Ridley was first announced, I figured that she was Luke's daughter and I think most everyone would have been fine with that. Like you said, it'd help her stand out and it would have been a good way to differentiate the sequels from the EU where he had a son.

I wouldn't care if the MC of a trilogy was girl. The OT had Leia. PT had Padme who, Lucas' dialogue aside, was good character I thought was under utilized.

I didn't like Rey because it was was clearly a pandering move. I figured they wouldn't do a good job and it'd be full of eye-rolling shit at best, but I had no fucking clue just exactly how bad they'd fuck it up.
