I honestly could not believe this was a thing, I had to look this up and damn if it isn't true. For one thing, I really want to know what idiots want to pay good money for the privilege of being forced to hang around with ANN "personalities" while in Japan.
If you haven't done so, you should read the tour info. They make sure to tell you that if you're an anime nerd you're a pathetic no life loser and they'll make sure to culture you up with other shit while you're in Japan. Make no mistake, there's great stuff in Japan that has nothing to do with anime, but if your "Anime News" site is putting together a tour to Japan, why the hell would you tell customers "yeah, all that anime shit you dream of seeing like big events and Akihabara, that stuff is trash, so we'll take you to a bunch of non-anime shit that'll make it all worthwhile".

Isn't Akihabara the part of Tokyo with just a bunch of stores for of anime and manga and merch to they point where it's just a con dealer's alley on steroids? Also, for an ANN tour, you think you's at least get something like a tour of an anime studio or a place like the Shonen Jump offices. Again, this tour makes me think ANN got were they were through a sheer lack of competition in general.

So, to be fair, Akihabara used to be "nerd" paradise with lots of anime/manga stores and the rest computer and electronics stuff. Because of it's fame, it's kind of like 1/3rd tourist trap, 1/3rd anime/manga and the rest just random trash. I'm not sure how much is due to the worldwide issue of online killing brick&mortar retail, but it's less compelling than it used to be. Still has cool stuff, but you have to work harder to find it. Really if you want to run a true anime fan tour, you should take people to the stores and stuff ALL over Tokyo that aren't as clustered together, like the Shonen Jump store near Tokyo Dome for example. But that's a lot of effort.
