They had to travel to Bethlehem to be registered for a census that was required by the Romans. Because Joseph was from the House of David, he had to go to Bethlehem, his home town, to be registered.

The ones who know their shit like to point out that Mary and Joseph ran away to Egypt after Herod went all "kill the babies," so that makes them illegal immigrants. However, this ignores the fact that Egypt was a province in the Roman Empire at the time so the equivalent would be running away from Virginia to, say, Arizona. And even if it wasn't, they would have been genuine refugees, as opposed to the La Raza/Reconquista 2.0/get free shit motives that drive many illegals nowadays.
I thought about the Egypt part too but as you pointed out it just didn’t add eather. There was no indication in Bible that they did anything considered illegal and I wouldn’t consider them even immigrating as the stay was pretty darn temporary.
