I never really played D&D or any other tabletop game myself but have heard many stories similar to yours. Is this a more recent thing? I feel like it would ruin everyone's gaming experience if you just had some exceptional individual ruining your game ranting about their genitals for 15 minutes.

There's a huge lore to how this happened and a lot of factors including the catlady administration of SA, the rise and fall of the Helldump and Laissez’s Fair boards of SA (this article sums it up from a more political context, along with this CTH post and replies), the Weird Twitter clique, and the rise of /r/shitredditsays resulting in goons migrating to and shitting up Reddit.

When SA removed these boards or their posters got banned, they ended up dispersing into more mainstream parts of the internet and their own SA offshoot forums.

Yeah, it has to do with a couple of factors. Tabletop already attracts a certain kind of autist, but if you couple that with intersectional politics and treating their special snowflake character as TOO MUCH of an extension of themselves, you can potentially get an autism super storm that can tear a once stable gaming group apart. As for weird fetish shit being inserted into a game, it has definitely existed before current year shenanigans (it's where the magical realm meme comes from), but it's more common now and less acceptable to mock because of who is doing it. Used to be you could make fun of a neckbears for bringing a furry character that tries to yiff his way through the game, but now if you say anything about rape trannies, you will probably be blacklisted.
