Honestly, I wonder how a fandom centralised around cartoon animals attracts perverts that are BGLT+ and have lots of fetishes. Cartoons usually are G-Rated or PG-Rated.

Then again, I wonder how Tumblr, a mere publishing platform, attracts social justice warriors.

I also have to laugh at oldfag tranny Crissa’s response in the #saveoursisk thread, and in how he nervously asks if there has to be proof you were chatting up the minor online because they were a minor. He’s a long time degenerate denizen of cybersex haven Furrymuck; i’m sure that the thought that one of the randos that he picks up and yiffs with is under age is something that keeps him up many a night, and has for many years.

Simple:
The roots of the furry fandom are an offshoot of the sci-fi fandom of the late 70s. Early trekkies with specific interest in anthro aliens. That became furry.

The fandom was *always* horny. Nerds are horny. There's nothing wrong with that if you don't retreat so far into fantasy that you become unrelatable or start justifying unacceptable things ("I'm attracted to dogs, and that's natural for me, so I'm entitled to it!").

So as far as the furry fandom being about cartoons or anthros in the traditional sense, from Bugs Bunny to werewolves, you still have that, but you also have a huge swath of people that only see it as a proxy for their personal fetishes and paraphilias. Again, no judgement there as long as we're talking safe, sane and informed consent.

It fluctuates between the two, but I think that's the core history of the fandom simplifed.

All true and, I can’t help but wonder if the fact that the early convention organizers (and thus in those pre-social media days, the influencers of the nascent fandom) were flamboyant, fetish-y and extra weird LA and San Francisco gay guys. I think that definitely set the tone for the fandom as a fetish and LGBT space and I’ve often thought that if Merlino, O’Riley and the others hadn't been around there would never have been a furry fandom - cartoon and anthro animals are just niche parts of the animation and sci-fi fandoms, they can’t really sustain their own fandom in and of themselves.

In the 90s conventions were giant orgies. Although we kept it to two legs and not four and now I guess that's gone wrong.

Before my time. Found the genre in 1999 and the fandom in 2000.

Powerleveling here, but I think about all the trauma and pain I'd saved myself from if I'd never found it.
