Humanity formed a central government of sorts, expanded out into deep space, and became a part of a diverse galactic community. Would racism based on skin color even exist in such a case? Xenophobia against an alien species is one thing since they're a new and relatively unknown factor, but that's going to be a bigger deal than some guy who has darker skin than you. In the Mass Effect universe, species are going to look out for their own, regardless of superficial differences.

It's part of why I've always thought the attempts by SJWs to equate species with races is so stupid. Take the movie District 9 - there's a clear allegory about apartheid there, but the film also doesn't shy away from the fact that the aliens aren't other people, they're humanoid insectoids. So the film, while playing with the theme of segregation, isn't so stupid as to be a capital-S Statement about racism. It's the same with all those SJW attempts to equate the orcs in Lord of the Rings with black people, or the house elves and goblins of Harry Potter with real-world stereotypes.

It's like the SJW's lack of imagination and empathy leads them to try to punish anyone who can encounter fiction without having to relate it to their own worldview to understand and enjoy it.
