Iraqi supporters of Iran-backed militia attack US Embassy

BAGHDAD (AP) — Dozens of angry Iraqi Shiite militia supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday after smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area, prompting tear gas and sounds of gunfire.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy. It was not clear what caused the fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

The embassy attack followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said it was in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it had blamed on the militia.

Dozens of protesters marched inside the compound after smashing the gate used by cars to enter the embassy. The protesters, many in militia uniform, stopped in a corridor after about 5 meters (16 feet), and were only about 200 meters away from the main building. Half a dozen U.S. soldiers were seen on the roof of the main building, their guns were pointed at the protesters.

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing. It wasn’t immediately known whether the embassy staff had remained inside the main building.

The protesters hanged a poster on the wall: “America is an aggressor.”

Shouting “Down, Down USA,” the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water and stones over its walls. They raised yellow militia flags and taunted the embassy’s security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates’ reception area. They sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah militia: “Closed in the name of the resistance.”

Hundreds of angry protesters, some in militia uniforms, set up tents outside the embassy. As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

No one was immediately reported hurt in the rampage and security staff had withdrawn to inside the embassy earlier, soon after protesters gathered outside.

The U.S. attack — the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years — and the subsequent calls by the militia for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners and supporters held funerals for the militia fighters killed in a Baghdad neighborhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the sprawling U.S. Embassy there.

AP journalists then saw the crowd as they tried to scale the walls of the embassy, in what appeared to be an attempt to storm it, shouting “Down, down USA!” and “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday’s strikes send the message that the U.S. will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.

The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia had vowed Monday to retaliate for the U.S. military strikes. The attack and vows for revenge raised concerns of new attacks that could threaten American interests in the region.

The U.S. attack also outraged both the militias and the Iraqi government, which said it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S.-led coalition — the first time it has said it will do so since an agreement was struck to keep some U.S. troops in the country. It called the attack a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.

In a partly televised meeting Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Cabinet members that he had tried to stop the U.S. operation “but there was insistence” from American officials.

The U.S. military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is a separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.

Iran backed militias are popping of a few bottle rockets in the general direction of American infrastructure, only hits Iraqi civilians.

That airbase (ex-LSA Anaconda) is so huge & developed now, it's hilarious they didn't hit anything. But a lot of it is also empty space, so.....

Then again, a huge percentage of the rockets fired at Anaconda in the past never hit anything either; most being sent in haste from the back of a Bongo or an improvised frame-type static launcher. The maze of T-walls and C-bunkers make it impossible to spot targets from outside the wire as well, pretty much the only way haji could pinpoint something was by having a guy inside the wire doing pace-counts.

It's so nice of Iraqi Hezbollah to give the USAF a nice bloc of target area to just lay waste to if anyone's caught moving about.

Even without drones, we have ground-based cameras than can see shit coming a lot further than a klick out. At Anaconda alone, haji mortar teams regularly got spotted & zapped more than 2k out, before they'd even gotten their tube set, and this was before drones were ubiquitous.

Unless they mean to use some sort of NBC.... which would be an even poorer choice.

Nobody is going to take Iran's side on this. They wrote an angry letter to the UN and Russia declared the strike was acceptable retaliation. If Russia isn't siding with Iran then China isn't either, especially since attacking an embassy is one of the biggest diplomatic taboos.
The chinese had their karachi consulted assaulted in 2018, i doubt they're going to stand with iran for attacking the us embassy.

Just a meme. Lots of shit talking on twitter and TV but no one is going to rush in to aid Iran.
I was thinking maybe things could blow up bigly if Iran decided to suicide by shelling our Greatest Ally but I don't see how they could move anything substantial in to range with out getting smoked enroute. The reapers are circling overhead like hawks over a field looking for a mouse.
I can't really see Iran managing to damage Israel before being dogpiled. Even if they had nukes, they can't use them without obliterating Jerusalem, which is counter-productive to their religion.

Edit:

Semi-random light mortar shelling by pro-Iranian militia forces.

I should point out that these "militia men" are poorly trained using (as previous mentioned) really bad launcher rail. Off of those rails (or guide-sticks) they throw really shitty homemade or cold war castoffs. It goes without saying that these systems are worse than unguided.

It is no surprise that they can't hit the broad side of a barn.

If Russia isn't backing their play and instead is telling them play stupid games, win stupid prizes, they are fcucked. WWIII is off every body. *sigh*

Iran doesn't have allies, the US has enemies. Pakistan and Iran on the outs diplomatically. No one around them likes them. Russia and Iran are both backing Al Assad but aren't getting along.

The only countries that would reliably support Iran are Cuba and Venezuela, and they can't do shit.

edit: should say explicitly because Russia was the only powerful country that might have backed them to piss off the US, if they are out, Iran is on their own. And China won't come in on the side of Iran because they don't want to irritate the Absolute Madman when the international community is generally not giving Iran any play about the Embassy Attack. Iran did an amazing job of isolating themselves.

They've been under the scope of the IAAI since 2017. I would imagine anything serious would be preempted. No one in that area likes Iran.

I wonder if it was such long-term thinking when Trump moved the capital there. Time traveler, I swear.

When an airfield was blown up, exceptional individuals were screaming World War 3.

People are so misinformed about what caused world war 1 and 2 that they just think any type of shakeup will send every country to war.
When the archduke was shot, it wasnt frontpage news and it took a month before the war started.
Four year later, fourty million people were dead and century-old empires were toppled.
Personally I think this wont be much except for a few airstrikes, but its too early to say.

in other news
Dont know how true this is but it could be another step on the ladder of escalation.

The type of people screaming this will start WW3 seem to me the type of people who think anything that goes against the status-quo. They think that any sudden changes to the world is going to be the end of everything. That or they're autistic and hate when patterns aren't followed. Unfortunately for them, the pattern of pleasing and allowing Iran to do what it wants just got thrown on its head.

And I'm fucking lovin it.

That happened with a few South American military dictatorships. I wouldn’t go as far as say it will happen, but that is a scenario that plausibly could result in a military dictatorship in the US.

Fuck off Doomers, if you want this sensation, why not do some service overseas?

Look at liberal utopia California, favelas/homeless hobos everywhere and woketards in Virginia trying to nullify the Second Amendment/local housing ordinances. While we're busy elsewhere the commies will take advantage; look at them now, crying over Soleimani, a man they had no idea existed three days ago. Threats are not just external, they're internal as well. You have several public figures willingly supporting the Islamic State of Iran, a country that has kidnapped, tortured and murdered American citizens for decades. It's not inconceivable the US could face a domestic crisis of its own, egged on by Iran and other enemies. In asymmetrical warfare, which is the only option open to Iran at this point, tactical actions are not necessarily military but can include domestic unrest and the like.

Think strategically, not just tactically.

It's worth checking out the Michael Moore Facebook page. Since yesterday he's been on full 100% shill mode for Iran, writing peans about how "beautiful" the Iranian people are and bullshit that you would have seen back during the Obama years when the US was in full capitulation mode to the Mullahs.

Nary a peep from this fat fuck when his boy was drone-striking weddings and killing US citizens extra-judicially.

All I can think of is the scene from Clear and Present Danger when the house gets fucking obliterated.
