Closing Logos Group / CLG Wiki - Spooky scary TV logos! (NIGHTMARE FACTOR)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
ahahaha this group! i found them years ago and was just...mystified. i didn't fully understand autism at the time, i figured they were just overly jumpy or something.

some logos i'd find creepy, they'd find humorous, and some logos that i'd think nothing of - the v from hell or satan's s or whatever.

No additional incest but it is as silly as you would imagine.

Apparently logo fandom has been a thing for a while. Here's a full-on Web 1.0 tribute to the S From Hell. This guy says it "gives [him] the chills" but also calls it "excellant."

Also in addition to the CLG wiki there is a Scary Logos Wiki.

EDIT: That documentary includes a child's head decomposing into insects and snakes and a running plotline of a girl having a nightmare about a giant Screem Gems logo that's about to eat her. It's a legit effort.

I've waffled about making a thread about these people, but yes, they are very spergy individuals. It would be safe to say that the entirety of the CLG people have autism for obsessing over TV logos in obsessive, encyclopedic detail.

Also, they had to put up a policy dealing with using autism as an excuse for rule breaking, because apparently it became an issue at one point.

30.) Autism, Aspergers and other mental disorders will not excuse rule-breaking. While we understand the trials that these people deal with, they will be treated the same as everyone else. Don't use the Autism card with us: we will BAN YOU!!!

As with all the other rules listed, I find it funny how they emphasize BANNING YOU IN RED AND ALL-CAPS.

I kinda respect that. They're clearly all rolling deep in the atsimu, but they don't allow people to play the autism card.

I used to lurk around the CLG back in the day (as I *do* enjoy seeing old closing logos for the nostalgia of them), and made the mistake of asking what exactly makes the "S from Hell" so scary. Within two minutes, I was bombarded with several "OMG, YOU MEAN YOU CAN'T SEE HOW SCARRING IT IS?!?" sperg messages from other members of the group. I never opened that can of worms again...

This is fucking fascinating.

I'm just kind of amazed that there's this whole subculture around this that apparently came about from Baby Boomers being terrified of a production logo. Little kids are scared of some weird shit, but the latching onto that fear is just... wow.

I feel like I've stumbled upon something magical.

The S from Hell and the Dic logo are the two ultimate "Scary logos" for CLGers.

If they still have their forum available on their website, go there and simply ask what makes these logos so scary, then sit back and watch the fun. Go ahead, I'll wait...

I'm amazed those are the two ultimate scary ones. The S from Hell seems like it only would have been considered scary if you were a small child in the 60's, and that's mostly due to the music being odd, I guess. Grown-ass adults shouldn't be scared of it.

I'm stunned that people find that more alarming than the THX logo. Even after I stopped being terrified of it it still makes me uncomfortable to this day. I think that's more of a sensory thing than anything, though. It's just an unnerving sound.

I wonder if these logos were played louder than the program itself, which might have startled people. Kind of like how commercials are louder than the programs that they're played during. Maybe that might be it.

I've yet to meet someone part of the CLG fandom who can explain in a rational/sane way what indeed makes those two logos so scary without dissolving into "THEY ARE EVIL, SCARY LOGOS! BURN THEM!" sperginess.

This is legit. I've seen many people on YouTube obsessed with closing logos from the 60s and 70s.

They kind of tie in with the same people obsessed with Emergency Alert System videos, which merits its own thread.
Tfw I fall into that category, since I used to be legitimately terrified as a kid (especially since the first time I heard it was after seeing a literal tornado from inside my mom's car when I was 9)

Also of this one as well, first time I saw it was on a sex ed video from 1983 with not only eerie footage of fetuses, but also the inside of a man's urethra

I can see the usefulness of cataloging old logo designs - as plainly historical curiosities.
However rating things horrifying/cheesy in linear fashion is purely subjective if not downright childish.
That's really for the viewer to decide for themselves.
Its important to eventually grow out of Pavlovian responses to such symbols.

@KatsuKitty

There's a 'tuber Oddity Archive that gets this way about old logos:
