Iraqi supporters of Iran-backed militia attack US Embassy

BAGHDAD (AP) — Dozens of angry Iraqi Shiite militia supporters broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday after smashing a main door and setting fire to a reception area, prompting tear gas and sounds of gunfire.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw flames rising from inside the compound and at least three U.S. soldiers on the roof of the main building inside embassy. It was not clear what caused the fire at the reception area near the parking lot of the compound. A man on a loudspeaker urged the mob not to enter the compound, saying: “The message was delivered.”

The embassy attack followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed militia in Iraq, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said it was in retaliation for last week’s killing of an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that it had blamed on the militia.

Dozens of protesters marched inside the compound after smashing the gate used by cars to enter the embassy. The protesters, many in militia uniform, stopped in a corridor after about 5 meters (16 feet), and were only about 200 meters away from the main building. Half a dozen U.S. soldiers were seen on the roof of the main building, their guns were pointed at the protesters.

Smoke from the tear gas rose in the area, and at least three of the protesters appeared to have difficulties breathing. It wasn’t immediately known whether the embassy staff had remained inside the main building.

The protesters hanged a poster on the wall: “America is an aggressor.”

Shouting “Down, Down USA,” the crowd tried to push inside the embassy grounds, hurling water and stones over its walls. They raised yellow militia flags and taunted the embassy’s security staff who remained behind the glass windows in the gates’ reception area. They sprayed graffiti on the wall and windows in red in support of the Kataeb Hezbollah militia: “Closed in the name of the resistance.”

Hundreds of angry protesters, some in militia uniforms, set up tents outside the embassy. As tempers rose, the mob set fire to three trailers used by security guards along the embassy wall.

No one was immediately reported hurt in the rampage and security staff had withdrawn to inside the embassy earlier, soon after protesters gathered outside.

The U.S. attack — the largest targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia in recent years — and the subsequent calls by the militia for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East.

Tuesday’s attempted embassy storming took place after mourners and supporters held funerals for the militia fighters killed in a Baghdad neighborhood, after which they marched on to the heavily fortified Green Zone and kept walking till they reached the sprawling U.S. Embassy there.

AP journalists then saw the crowd as they tried to scale the walls of the embassy, in what appeared to be an attempt to storm it, shouting “Down, down USA!” and “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday’s strikes send the message that the U.S. will not tolerate actions by Iran that jeopardize American lives.

The Iranian-backed Iraqi militia had vowed Monday to retaliate for the U.S. military strikes. The attack and vows for revenge raised concerns of new attacks that could threaten American interests in the region.

The U.S. attack also outraged both the militias and the Iraqi government, which said it will reconsider its relationship with the U.S.-led coalition — the first time it has said it will do so since an agreement was struck to keep some U.S. troops in the country. It called the attack a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty.

In a partly televised meeting Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Cabinet members that he had tried to stop the U.S. operation “but there was insistence” from American officials.

The U.S. military said “precision defensive strikes” were conducted against five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria. The group, which is a separate force from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, operates under the umbrella of the state-sanctioned militias known collectively as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Many of them are supported by Iran.

"Finally, to the people and the leaders of Iran: We want you to have a future--and a great future--one that you deserve. One of prosperity and hope and harmony with the nations of the world. The United States is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it."

@Cosmos This is why people support Trump. When you ignore the breathless, first-second headlines and weave through the fear-mongers and doom-criers, you don't wind up being a hyperventilating reactionary who thinks a peace-bringer is a war-hawk. The media's sole job right now is to terrify you to fuel ad revenue. Stop letting them manipulate your emotions.

There's not going to be a WW3. There never was going to be a WW3, just like the last five times they tried to make everyone shit their pants and send the entire country into a mouth-frothing panic. I'd ask if we could stop doing this every single time that the media wants us to do this, but I know for a fact that the second another conflict like this kicks off, we'll be right back to everyone shrieking about how WW3 is right around the corner. Again.

Trump is one of the remarkably few US Presidents capable of using both the a Carrot and the Stick. Most either just use the Stick (the Bush’s) or the Carrot (Obama, Carter). Reagan and Nixon were both surprisingly good at a balanced approach. Trump’s use of Military power probably most resembles Reagan’s. Used rarely, when used short limited but overwhelming attacks to discourage bad behavior, directed at the actual parties responsible. the Libya attack following Lockerbie is the textbook example of the Reagan Doctrine in this regard.

"Jews of the orient" was my exact quote

fucking confirmed:

Iran refuses to hand over the crashed Ukrainian Boeing Black box

So Ukraine is going to nuke Iran ... nope, because Ukrainians were dumb enough to believe US/UK/Russia and give up nukes in exchange for assurances to protect their territorial integrity. Lol, with Crimea and East Ukraine gone, I'm sure that they cash in those "assurances" because US won't even sell them lethal aid.

This is the reason kids you KEEP nukes when you have them.

The problem is that I think too many people nowadays can only remember the "carrot", so they can only see Trump's words as being disingenuous. I can already imagine the response: "You say you want peace, but you were the one who fired the missile at one of their leaders!"

Well, yeah. That was just the long overdue stick finally being pulled out of the drawer.

I have another scenario for how this plane could have been shot down through sheer exceptionalism. Imagine a poorly trained air defense crew noticing a new contact pop up on their radar right over Tehran. They should know better because the transponder is on and they should know that civilian aircraft take this route all the time. But they're expecting a shooting war because their glorious leaders had just launched ze missiles and killed thousands of Americans. So they see this new contact and assume they're about to bag an F-22 and become national heroes. Opps.
A lot of Military Air Defense particularly the Russian stuff is almost completely automated. There isn't a scope as such with contacts on it, the system will be set up in a particular mode given arcs of fire, the fire switch is essentially just taking of a safety the engagement itself is completely automatic.

So if it was shot down by a SAM, depending on how good the crew is and how the system was set up, it's entirely possible the Crew might have thought they were engaging a target in a completely different location.

This is the reason kids you KEEP nukes when you have them.
On the other hand, how much of a net good for the planet was it that the Apartheid-era South African government dismantled their nuclear program on the way out? If that country had access to nukes over the last 30 years they probably would've attempted the Bantu Migration in the opposite direction.

Trump: Iran 'standing down' after missile strikes

US President Donald Trump says Iran "appears to be standing down" after it targeted air bases housing US forces in Iraq.

Mr Trump said no US or Iraqi lives were lost in the attacks, and the bases suffered only minimal damage.

The attacks on the Irbil and Al Asad bases came early on Wednesday morning local time.

Iran said it acted in retaliation after the assassination of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani last week.

The US drone strike targeting him and Iran-backed militia figures in the Iraqi capital Baghdad was a major escalation amid already deteriorating relations between Iran and the US.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei described the missile attacks as a "slap in the face" for the US and called for an end to the American presence in the Middle East.

What did Mr Trump say?
The US president has previously threatened military action against Iran if it were to target US personnel and bases. But he stopped short of this, saying the attack had caused no casualties.

"No Americans were harmed in last night's attack by the Iranian regime," he said.

He also said that "American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent".

"The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it."

"Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned," he added.

Mr Trump also said the US would immediately impose additional financial and economic sanctions on Iran, which would remain until it "changed its behaviour".

"Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism," he said.

What happened in the missile attacks?
More than a dozen missiles launched from Iran struck two air bases in Irbil and Al Asad, west of Baghdad, at about 02:00 local time on Wednesday (22:30 GMT on Tuesday).

Several other missiles landed at some distance from the targets.

The attacks came just hours after the burial of Soleimani, who controlled Iran's proxy forces across the Middle East.

It was the most direct assault by Iran on the US since the seizing of the US embassy in Tehran in 1979.

Just hours after the missile strikes a Ukrainian airliner crashed in Iran shortly after take-off. There is no evidence that the two incidents are linked.

Several airlines have announced they are avoiding both Iranian and Iraqi airspace amid the rising tension.

How did we get here?
The assassination of Soleimani - head of the Revolutionary Guards' elite Quds Force and architect of Iranian policy in the region - took place on 3 January.

The general was regarded as a terrorist by the US government, which says he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops and was plotting "imminent" attacks.

Iran vowed "severe revenge" for his death. Mr Trump, meanwhile, warned the US would respond in the event of retaliation "perhaps in a disproportionate manner".

Millions of Iranians turned out for the commander's funeral, with mourners chanting "death to America" and "death to Trump".

A stampede at the burial in Soleimani's hometown Kerman killed 50 people and injured 200 more on Tuesday.

Iran says the attack was in retaliation for killing the country's top commander Qasem Soleimani

I used to be close to a lot of muslim people (Moved away, didnt cut ties for any other reason) and it really ranges as much as it does with other religions. I knew people that followed the Quaran as law, people that followed it closely, people that followed it as a guide to healthy living. Most weren't extremist and were extremely pleasant people.

That's the key term though, extremism. Extremism is dangerous no matter what it is, be it religion or politics. We have a country with an extreme political leader vs one with an extreme religious one, not really a good mix.

Hahaha no bro you got it all wrong, muslims are all goat fuckers, they fuck goats! they're also sandniggers lol, "niggers of the sand". I see you must be some kind of a NPC, and probably a liberal cuck too :smug:

If Iran did shoot down the Ukranian plane near Tehran, it will have officially killed 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, 4 Afghanis, 3 Germans, and 3 Britons + dozens of Iraqis in its retaliation against the U.S, which so far hasn't killed any US.

So, following the US assassination of Qassem Soleimani, Iran's response has so-far seen:
- A crush at his funeral that killed 56 Iranians
- A ballistic missile strike that killed nobody but continue to violate Iraqi Sovereignty.
- A shoot down of a civilian airliner killing 82 Iranians.

I gotta say, those early hours of the attack last night had me admittedly on edge but watching all you chucklefucks joking and dunking on Iran for its completely incompetent, exceptional behavior was the most I've laughed in a long time. And, based on the address today, it looks like things are calming down for now since Iran got bitch-whipped and completely failed to do anything threateningly impressive.

Cheers, assholes. I'm gonna go outside and smell the roses. Good day to be alive in the great US of A.

So why is the alt-right mad that we defended our self against Iran attacking our embassy?
It's a combination of the isolationists freaking out over that being the latest excuse for another Middle Eastern war, and the /pol/-fugees sperging about America's Greatest Ally. I can understand the former, since for some godforsaken reason Trump appointed holdovers from previous Republican administrations into his cabinet that have wanted revenge against Iran since 1979 (I still entertain the conspiracy theory that John Bolton orchestrated the Ukraine call leak that kicked off the impeachment hearings as revenge for Trump firing him for, what else, trying to start a war with Iran).

They're refusing to turn over the black boxes, which is kind of suspicious imo.
When it comes to normal crimes refusing to relinquish items or not cooperating doesn't automatically mean guilt. When it comes to aviation disasters like this however, specifically refusing to relinquish the black box does tend to mean you're guilty as shit.

Trudeau to apologise to Iran for having his citizens get in the way of one of their missiles and then to convert to islam.

That shows far too much spine for Trudeau. He should offer them oral sex, to bang his wife, and about 100 million to cover for clean up and damages from the canadians bodies, as well as their disposal. No no, no need to repatriate the bodies, your finest trashheap will be fine.

Here are some images of the damage to these bases:

It isn't much, but I just do not accept the whole: "they were only pretending to be harmless"

Yup. Those are impacts from real warheads. You don't send missiles with live warheads into/over another country as a warning shot, especially not with shitty Iranian missiles. Because if it goes off course....whew lad.

On the other hand, how much of a net good for the planet was it that the Apartheid-era South African government dismantled their nuclear program on the way out? If that country had access to nukes over the last 30 years they probably would've attempted the Bantu Migration in the opposite direction.

oh I get it, it's net positive and frankly Ukrainian military prior to 2014 (Russian invasion) was total shit and underfunded.

The problem is that US had made promises like 4 trillion in reparations to VietNam for Paris accords, nukes in Ukraine ... people eventually will get a wiff that giving up nukes isn't a good idea. I can't blame Kim for not wanting to give up nukes ... or Iran. US promises are useless and it's not lost on tyrants of the world. Once Kim gives up nukes Norks become Angola or some other African shithole without leverage on the world. Keeping promises makes sense, it goes a long way to maintain your integrity as a country to keep promises.

Iranian's backing down aside, The U.S. should really throw the counter insurgency burden on the Iranians for fighting the ISIS remnants. Then get the morons in a sort of time loop paradox.
We just had their #2 guy in charge assassinated after they tried messing with us via proxy terrorist outfits, now you want us to go tell them to go back to doing that, but just in Syria this time? ISIS never really held Iranian territory in the first place, so there's no local group for them to launch a counter-insurgency against.
