Arin Hanson / Egoraptor / Grump - "Hey I'm Grump!" of Game Grumps fame, hypocritical SJW doxer, shat himself recording a let's play

I'm the only one bothered that the only clicbait they could come with in the 69th episode of twilight princess is a shitty reddit meme? I mean, c'mon at least try to pretend that your fanbase is not made entirely of 13 year olds that still find le sex position funny.

I just... I don't even...

I can't even describe the bullshittery going on at this point, just see for yourselves. It's pretty self-explanatory.

I'm more pissed off at the fact this isn't an ISIS hostage video to be honest.

Also love the people saying they thought it was real and still sucking Arin's cock for deflecting any sort of criticism by filming a terrible sketch.

TIL that everyone who got upset over Arin's "clearly straightforward character over the years" are children and don't deserve Mr. Hanson's comedic genius. It's just the "Grumps as usual youzch guis".

There's so much bile and self-self-hatred mixed with a complete lack of awareness in this fanbase, and I don't think I'll ever understand why nor how it got this bad, no matter how much we discuss it; even Tumblrinas and rabid K-pop stans don't hate each other this fucking much - nor idolize over someone like this so much - at the same time.
Holy shit, did Arin get really fat or something? It didn't show that much in other recent videos. But in this one he looks quite chunky tbh.

That's the conclusion I've come to over the years as well, a lot of his stuff I though was comedic sarcasm feels like genuine cases of narcissism in hindsight. The way he went full salty bitch mode over cartoonists not drawing him tall enough seems to support this quite a bit.

Let me point out that Arin had no problem with uploading a video where he accidentally shit himself, yet he's insecure about his height. It's fascinating how much he suffers from cognitive dissonance. Like the fact that he hates tutorials, but has no problem using walkthroughs.

I remember from the TIHYDP Skyward Sword video,
Arin: “Oh it wasn’t super clear about what I was supposed to do.
Dan: “But you like that!
Arin: “No I don’t.

“But if I backpedal then no ones gonna be happy. Not the people who liked the bit and not the people who wanted me to apologize”
Well at least we finally can understand Arin’s thinking for every action that’s angered his fans. Spite

It’s almost amazing how he thinks he knows how everyone will react to him apologizing for anything. This type of guy wouldn’t listen to someone else’s second opinion to save his life.

Wow it’s insulting that Arin thinks the KGB would waste time getting him when Pewdiepie is right there.
His justification for his toying with his fans is he believed in horror movies like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity.

Well, spite is the very reason Game Grumps as a company/business is a thing (Arin acknowledged this early on in the Skyward Sword playthorugh, if I recall correctly), so this doesn't come as a shock.

How do all of these let’s play channels that all play the same games not overlap? Like, is there anything really to be said during a Zelda play through that everyone else hasn’t already said since it came out?
I know I’ve joked that these videos are just story time/life update podcasts with a game in the background, but is that really the point of these? I’m including everyone in I’m this, not just the grumps

I would assume many LP fans either only watch one Let's Player or a handful of Let's Players. Don't assume that they're intimately familiar with whatever game's being played.

I watched that video out of curiosity and it's nearly a good response. It falls right the fuck apart with how insanely manipulative the skit was. Consider this a review of it.

Basically, Arin gets kidnapped by two Russians, you know that already. Now the Russians are clearly representing the fans that are annoyed, which is already a fairly negative portrayal of your own fanbase. On the one hand, it is fairly accurate to how somebody with a huge following can feel if their fans are angry at them, as if they could make or break you at any second. The part that seriously urks me, however, is how Arin is portrayed. They REALLY go to town with making him the hero of this tale. Even though he is held hostage and being tortured, he is acting so abnormally kind and friendly given the scenario. Even before the kidnapping he's all like "boohoo woe is me I didn't mean to hurt people" but during the kidnapping he keeps this up. It's so blatant how much they wanted Arin to appear as a saint here that even in the scariest of situations he still acts all wholesome. Plus, every time he talks they play a sad piano theme just to really hammer home how much we're supposed to feel sorry for Arin and being all guilty for being mad at him.

He doesn't exactly see things the fans' way, you know understanding why they felt upset about it, in fact it's the big bad kidnappers who point out that fans felt betrayed by it. Instead he basically says "well I thought Blair Witch was real... that's part of the fun!" and those things just don't even compare. For starters, he was 12 years old when that film came out so no shit he believed it. Secondly, the point of that marketing wasn't to trick people into thinking it was real, it was simply to generate interest essentially by telling parts of the story through the marketing. It was done a lot smarter than just going around tricking people the way Game Grumps did. How they did it would be like if the news kept reporting on a story of Blair Witch, getting people invested, only to end the reports by saying "so all this lost footage has been spliced together into a film, out in theatres near you!". Lastly, Game Grumps views have dropped significantly this past year, and Youtube isn't as keen on recommending them anymore as a result of that, so the only people this marketing would reach are their loyal subscribers (under 500k viewers average out of 5 million subs) and no one besides them gives a fuck about Game Grumps anymore, so there was no chance of this going viral. I don't think anyone outside of the fanbase even know what went on or that there's even a game at all.

As far as the situation goes, they could have easily poked fun at themselves for fucking up so bad but all the video ended up doing was treating Arin as a victim. It's fucking MatPat levels of "I'm such a victim because people criticised me". There's one joke that almost got me were Arin's fake uncle phones up and the kidnappers get annoyed again, but then they just pull a Family Guy and play that bit out for ages. Besides that, the video purely portrays them as innocent souls that are getting abused just for having fun. The funny thing is, this idea of making a sketch to address the drama is a fine idea but they really would have been better off with a more sincere apology in the form of a vlog or something, addressing the concerns and accepting that they were at fault. Instead this was just more Egoraptor hand jobs and then it ends with another advertisement for the game. The line that summed it all up, and was probably the only time they actually admitted the whole stunt was a mistake was Arin saying "we should have just marketed this game normally". Yes Arin, you should have. You should have done everything normally. Including addressing the upset fans of yours.

Soviet Jump Game doesn't look too bad at least.

It honestly looks interesting and then you find out...

It's a freemium battle royale game

And there goes your interest right out the fucking window. People are tired of microtransactions and unless your game is like fucking Destiny or Warframe it's probably not going to succeed.

To follow on, different Lets Players have different methods of handling it. To give some examples:
  • OneyPlays generally focuses on joking and riffing, with a variety of funny voices and a willingness to push the boundaries for a good gag.
  • Chuggaaconroy goes really in depth explaining the mechanics - for example, in his Pokemon Lets Plays, he basically has a prepared slide and description for every single Pokemon - and also explains his life stories in the context of the game - like how a poor understanding of mechanics lead to him creating an awful, slow final battle where neither side could kill the other in Partners in Time.
  • Something like Press Buttons 'n' Talk (ProZD's lets play) focuses on using voice actor skills to add more character to a game.
  • Vinesauce has some really funny LPers who both actively engage with the chat and tend to be good showmen, as well as spicing it up with Mods and Corruptions.
  • Game Grumps
Different people will go to different LPers based on what they like and look for.
Edit: Added more details.

I would add the super gaming brothers. Remember when Arin used to have commentary from a game design perspective? Johnny has you covered.

Good list! Me would add James and Mike Mondays, Mike sucks on his own, but here he fits perfectly as the nerdy goofy sidekick to James's straight man.

I was thinking of editing in examples of the various people doing their various things. If you guys have good examples for these two lps (or any other ones that come to mind) it'd be good to send them.

But anyway, that tendency to watch one or two lets plays at most is a big factor in the Game Grumps' perpetuation. People don't go to other lps if they go to Game Grumps, and even if they did, there's often a huge disconnect that sends them back to the classics before they adjust. You'll note that a lot of the Rant Grumps people explicitly state liking OneyPlays and/or SuperMega, who are spiritual successors to golden age game grumps.
