It's also not how the Roman census system worked. The author of Luke just needs a device to get Jesus from Nazareth (where everyone knows his entire family lived) to Bethlehem (where the Messiah has to be from according to Micah).
If "each to his own city" had been a thing. we would have documentation of it. Not to mention that it literally doesn't make any sense (you do a census to assess taxes, shuffling people around to places they don't live in is just counter-productive) and would be a massive economic and social disruption - thousands of people on the move - just for some hare-brained administrative fancy. The Romans knew what they were doing and if there had been such an imperial edict, we would know.

A lot of ancient censuses were purely to know what kind of swift conscription in the area could happen if need be. They weren't real big on collecting everything to send to a statistical analyst like Zinnia to crunch the demographics on.

I can't entirely blame Zach for wanting to falsify the Biblical account. Any objectively provable events that can be given historical analysis can and should be held up to sunlight to see if they survive scrutiny. If he wants to toss out all the supernatural stuff, fine, atheists do that by default, and that's more than understandable.

TED talks are by "experts", loosely defined but not wide open self defined.
This requires some sort of real world success at whatever it is.
ZJ's TED talk would be about the Chelsea Manning trial and related issues.
A genuine if debatable case can be made that ZJ is an expert.
Not generic lefty talking points, even on trans issues.
The TED "expert" would need to have a degree in something.
