This deserves its own separate discussion, but I have a theory:
The Fedoras tended to stem either from normie white, middle class evangelical or post-Vatican II Catholic backgrounds, and were largely a millennial phenomenon. For whatever reason, many of them rebelled against their religious upbringing once they reached
middle school college once they got away from their devout parents. Many were frustrated with traditional sexual norms (e.g., no sex before marriage, no birth control, etc.) and saw the New Atheism as being a ticket to sexual freedom.
However, it soon became clear that not everything was sunshine and roses. Not every girl you propositioned wanted to sleep with you. Those that did sleep with you could just as easily claim that you raped them just because they didn't like the experience. Those with higher sexual value tended to hoard the girls that you wanted. The promise of easy tail didn't really materialize, and you're left deprived of what you led to believe what would happen.
This has led to several avenues, including MGTOW (e.g., TFM). However, some who are a little more honest about wanting sex saw Traditionalist Christianity as the only way to get guaranteed tail. However, you don't see them going to a form of Protestant Christianity, but to Catholicism or even Eastern Orthodoxy with the idea that Traditionalist Christianity = more Trad waifus. The problem is that sexual degeneracy is just as prevalent in those groups, if not more so than in the evangelical denominations that they originally hailed from. It's also edgier.
However, there is another reason why many of these fedoras go Catholic: there's a looser standard. On the surface, that seems counter intuitive, given that most Protestant groups don't ban masturbation or anal sex. However, there isn't much of a price for committing those sins, as the remedy is just confessing your sin to the priest and doing your Hail Marys. There isn't a whole lot of emphasis on personal change or repentance in the same way that many Protestant groups do, albeit deficiently. Anecdotally, I tend to see more "TradCats" post loli memes than Protestants, but that's neither here nor there.
That's why I believe we should have a TradCat/Orthobro thread. There really is so much stuff out there that would fill a thread.
As annoying as it is, there is something to it. Humans tend to overcompensate with what they struggle with. Case in point, the Ancient Greek obsession with hubris, a theme which shows up in their epics and histories. I tend to think that the problem of hubris was rampant in the leadership of the Greek city-states at that time.
But, I do agree that it is overblown. There is a bit of projection involved, too.
