Hahahahaha tell that to a state’s department of education; they determine a school’s lesson plan for the year. You better have a good explanation of what students should understand from your pulp fiction, if you want it taught in schools or as part of a summer reading program.

When I was in school one of the AP English classes had to read a book for Black History Month that featured a scene in which two brothers had a contest to see who could get off from masturbating the quickest while watching their parents have sex. I wonder what educational value was found in that or how it strengthened race relations. Perhaps the best part was the every student in that AP English class was white.

Pretty sure reading that would make me into a racist.

This has to be the antithesis to "To Russell, My Brother, Whom I've Slept With".

Are you sure that was a book and not a thread here?

The book in question is Native Son by Richard Wright. I looked at the plot to see if I remembered was I was told about it correctly and the one detail that was incorrect was that the boys were masturbating at a theater while watching a movie instead of watching their parents. Even after all this time it was a relief to know that part was wrong. However I still find it odd that, out of all the books that could be assigned for Black History Month, the teacher thought this was the best choice.

That’s a brilliant novel by a black author and can actually generate a lot of discussion because it asks hard questions that really only have uncomfortable answers. Much better than the “aren’t white men stupid” babble that most of the authors covered in this thread preach

From the creator of the hit webcomic My Life As a Background Slytherin comes a hilarious graphic novel pastiche of classic Romantic literature led by a trio of queer misfits—and several angry vampires.

Set in early nineteenth-century Britain, Bloodlust & Bonnets follows Lucy, an unworldly debutante who desires a life of passion and intrigue—qualities which earn her the attention of Lady Violet Travesty, the leader of a local vampire cult.

But before Lucy can embark on her new life of vampiric debauchery, she finds herself unexpectedly thrown together with the flamboyant poet Lord Byron (“from books!”) and a mysterious bounty-hunter named Sham. The unlikely trio lie, flirt, fight, and manipulate each other as they make their way across Britain, disrupting society balls, slaying vampires, and making every effort not to betray their feelings to each other as their personal and romantic lives become increasingly entangled.

Both witty and slapstick, elegant and gory, Emily McGovern’s debut graphic novel pays tribute to and pokes fun at beloved romance tropes, delivering a joyous, action-packed world of friendship and adventure.

The art is horrendous, and that "Sham" character? The two main characters meet them for the first time, ask- apropos of nothing- if they're a boy or a girl, and they say "Yes". It reeked of Tumblr humor. At least the art wasn't a Steven Universe ripoff, like so many others I've seen recently (like, published works. Actual published works on my store's shelves.)

And also (this one is older but fuck do I hate it):

Rebellions are built on hope.

Set in a horrifying near-future United States, seventeen-year-old Layla Amin and her parents are forced into an internment camp for Muslim American citizens.

With the help of newly made friends also trapped within the internment camp, her boyfriend on the outside, and an unexpected alliance, Layla begins a journey to fight for freedom, leading a revolution against the internment camp's Director and his guards.

Heart-racing and emotional, Internment challenges readers to fight complicit silence that exists in our society today.

I despise that the author ripped that quote off of Rogue One, and I despise even more this recent trend of "WHAT IF DRUMPF PUTS MUSLIMS IN INTERNMENT CAMPS" fiction. It's Oppression Porn, pure and simple.

I also hate the dearth of WW2 Japanese internment camp fiction that's cropped up in recent years, mostly because they're less interested in discussing historical fact (if we were doing that, we'd be talking about the internment camps for Germans that absofuckinglutely existed even if no one wants to acknowledge them) and more about saying "fuck whitey" and stoking dat sweet, sweet white guilt.

There is this one that covers German internment camps and doesn't seem to be just "WHITEY BAD": https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40530049-the-last-year-of-the-war
Can't find any others though.

If anyone can think that The Silence of the Lambs is the worst thing they’ve ever read, they’ve probably only read five other books.

When I was young the teacher, after telling us about what Hitler et al. Did asked us if any of us were German. Of course a lot of us had German heritage since it was a 99% white school up north, but even we'd known if we were or not nobody wanted to answer. Nobody wanted to be like the bad guy, like the teacher was phrasing it.
Even in white communities whites are ebul and we need coloredes to come show us the way. (Instead of just creative/smart ppl ya kno)
BTW, classic German lit should be taught more, but that's none of my business. Not like teens could get more out of Siddhartha than Romeo and Juliet. /sneed

Oh yeah, Internment was on the goodreads best of 2019 YA, just thank god it didn't get to the final round.

Buffalo Bill was an AGP troon before it was cool. If he were a real person and existed today, he would have a thread on here even if nobody ever found out about his murder activities

>a glacially paced mystery/thriller
>It's excruciatingly boring on top of it all

I have a feeling this is more "low attention span" than legitimate criticism.

"Weirdly it even comes off as sexist to the cis protag."

I've only seen the movie so I'm not sure if this applies to the book, but my reading of it was that Starling did face discrimination as a woman in a profession dominated by males. This is why the movie employs the uncomfortable POV shots that are right at eye level while Starling is talking to most of the male characters, with most of them coming off as either condescending or creepy.

Calling the work "weirdly sexist" misses the entire point when that's literally what the main character is experiencing, but I guess that's too subtle for people these days.
