it’s a combination of things:
1. their insistence on ‘wet markets’ where pretty much anything gets caged next to other stuff, slaughtered and eaten.
2. people living in close contact with pigs and waterfowl
3. High density /poor husbandry of animals
4. High density population
5. Migratory routes for waterfowl.

a lot of things like flu swirl about in pigs and waterfowl. When they cross over into humans you have the potential to create novel strains we have no immunity to. Wet markets/eating all sorts of random shit from the wild = exposure to all sorts of pathogens. very high population density of humans is also a bad idea.

Actually MOST animals do, and occasionally it jumps to humans. Keeping hundreds of thousands of pigs in awful conditions is a reviled for disaster, as is high density duck/chicken rearing in areas where there are a lot of migratory birds.

the likelihood is that this will circulate, kill a few hundred, and then fizzle out. But make no mistake, one of these emergent viruses (probably flu, but maybe a respiratory something like a novel coronavirus) will emerge, spread and rival or exceed the 1917 flu pandemic. very probable. At the least they’d have had lower densities and be producing and slaughtering locally. I’m a carnivore, and fond of progress so this isn’t any kind of vegan / must go back to nature rant, but intensive factory farming isn’t a great idea for any animal. It can only work with very, very stringent controls and even then you’re working against a set of pressures that are hard to evade. High densities encourage physical and mental illness, parasite and pathogen transmission, and just general badness (for humans as well as other creatures.) The best farming practices are probably those which are informed by traditions and which use the best of modern and traditional. Low density, as sustainable as possible etc.
The next respiratory mega plague may well arise in china.

Modern farming is pretty bad for all involved. From a plant point of view most farmers now intensively grow mono-cultures. From an animal point of view high-density lots are popular and profitable. This has made animals highly susceptible to various diseases. Pigs (for example) are close enough to humans that the things that infect them can easily make the jump to people (I had such high hopes for the last round of swine flu).

Back to the subject at hand, China has a big problem with antibiotic resistance in part (India too) because 1. they give out antibiotics like fucking candy, but 2. because of their use in industrial farming.

When the end comes, and it will come, it will come from the East and be the result of shit.

Not sure where you got this from.

The "Great Leap Forward" and "Three Years of Natural Disasters" were a direct result of Mao's insane land redistribution practices. It's not really the "Great Cultural Revolution" which was more about overthrowing traditionalism and culture. If anything, it's land redistribution that is to blame here, but I don't believe that to be the case either in this specific incident.

I don't think this has much to do with China's farming practices. I've been to the farms (not the one filled with autistic faggots), they aren't any different to western mass farming ones. I'd lay the blame of slaughtering practices and the absolutely false notion of "animals taste better when they are killed fresh and suffer before being cooked", this is absolutely scientifically untrue. The actual death toll of Sichuan earthquakes is still not known, there isn't a list of victims which ultimately stem from the nation's shoddy construction practices. I'm rather cynical of course. The virus could have been prevented if the Party had laws prohibiting the consumption of stuff that humans should just not eat, and regulate how markets (known as 菜市場) function. Food markets in China are open air with slaughter going on everywhere. Fish, prawns, shellfish, chickens, ducks etc, are all in close proximity to vegetables, cooked meat, raw meat etc, this enables cross contamination and it's extremely unsanitary. Such practices are illegal in the west. Gordon Ramsay will agree with me. The party would rather act when something happens, which is stupid.
