Anime News Network (ANN), Christopher Macdonald & Co. - "Unbiased" Reporting on All Things Anime Related By Snobbish Quebec-Based Web Company. Acquired by Kadokawa.

By the looks of it, it feels like every eroge that has been adapted into anime so far have ANN be screeching about the "sexual themes" with lunacy levels of Manjaw.

Clean H-game adaptations exist (Fate before Heaven's Feel, just about everything of Key/Visual Arts), or have they forgotten about that? They've probably only been recently getting their panties in a twist over sexual themes due to their own sexual allegations on the team because projection is one hell of a drug.

Apologies for the double post, but I decided to bite the bullet and check out Nekopara, starting with the 2017 OVA. If it hadn't been brought up that it's based off an H-game, I wouldn't have ever known. This is a tame series, these "sexual themes" are virtually nonexistent and are only brought up in dialogue and maybe some suggestive camera angles (the end illustrations by guest artists are erotic in nature because... because, so I'm not counting that towards the show itself). There's also the purple-haired catgirl who's always going into heat and might be a lesbian, why isn't she getting those progressive brownie points? The few times anything of sexual nature crops up, it's actually natural for these characters and didn't feel out of place. Maybe later on it gets more sexual, but thus far, two episodes in? Nada. It's just catgirls acting like cats (they literally have no shame) but in human form. Have these people never been around cats before? Hell, the literal first line is "Do you know about cats?"

If they want to find issues with a show about catgirl maids, why not just point out how catgirls are nothing more than servants to their owners (even though the main cast gets treated like family, but the catgirl sisters still act like maids even when the bakery's closed)? They legally can't go anywhere without bell permits, after all, or else they get taken into custody. Happiness in slavery!

But the series is cute and has plenty of cosplay material if you don't think about it too hard. ANN's unsurprisingly just run by a bunch of joyless fucktards. What, are they going to get mad at Daddy Funimation for licensing the TV series? Pathetic. Everyone should watch this series just so the pussies at ANN can piss their pants in rage over being unable to sway anime fans to their side.

If anything, I'd say that they probably feel that those examples justify their complaints. After all, those VN-based anime managed to adapt their source material without including sexual content, so why can't this one?

(The answer that they are missing, of course, is that not all eroge are equal in terms of sexual content. Clean adaptations usually come from VNs where the sex was thrown in to ensure a safe number of sales by relatively new companies that cannot afford to take risks, but where the writer was clearly not interested in including that type of content and would later stop including such things once they could afford to do so. In contrast, my understanding (not personally familiar with the work in question beyond the general premise) is that Nekopara has more extensive fanservice which is considered one of the selling points, so a "clean" adaptation would be a more extensive alteration that would alienate people who were already fans of the franchise).

There are some odd double standards at play. Theron Martin gave the first two episodes of Interspecies Reviewers 4/5 stars, by apologizing for the content and whining about how they don't go with a progressive/feminist approach regarding the girls. He gives The Island of Insects 3/5, justifying it as an ironically enjoyable schlocky b-horror flick. Keep in mind both of these have way more extreme content than Nekopara, which he managed to give 2/5 stars. While the sexuality, fanservice and gore with the Insect movie seem to be no problem for him, he contemplates on the neko maids a way too much for a simple slice of life/moe anime:

"The premise also raises all kinds of questions that the series probably is not prepared to ever answer. Since these cats age rapidly by human standards, does that mean that they will only have the lifespan of a normal cat? Where are the male cats, or do these catgirl just reproduce with human males? Clearly they have inferior rights to humans, but how do they feel about that? This kind of fare is not at all intended to be deep, so I will be shocked if the series ever bothers to try addressing any of them. It does at least look like it's going to deal with the matter of strays pretty quickly, so at least that's something."

Since it's a Funimation show, shouldn't they be shilling it in a nicer manner? The funny thing is that everyone else went out of their way to trash Nekopara, but Theron was the only one willing to review Interspecies Reviewers.

Funimations check bounced.

Lmao I haven't seen that movie yet, just the OVA premiere or whatever the fuck it is, and it's so unabashedly trashy about how it treats the female characters. Yes, it's basically schlocky B-horror, but there's schlocky B-horror films that have treated their female roles with more respect. They at least don't try to pass off girls getting eaten alive by maggots as erotic.

Also, what the fuck kind of betamale name is "Theron"? :story:

Just realized that Nekopara is going to get dubbed by Funimation.

I honestly don't know how I should feel about this.
Less work for Funi means hopefully less fucking around with what the shows actually saying and less disrespecting the original authors work and intent, so less work for Funi is always a win.

Its the kinda show no one will ever watch dubbed so expect unfunny social politics.
Gonna keep an eye out if any fat bitches like Jamie Marchi is involved in it.

I'm assuming he either got pressure from the Editor in Chief or he's just bending to the opinions of the few insane morons that actually still read that site. Years ago, Theron was basically the only reviewer they had that was either a fan of moe/harem shows or was at least willing to give them a fair shake. I wouldn't be shocked if some of his ratings are lowered due to peer pressure. For me at least, Theron was the only reviewer they had who I wouldn't actively avoid shows that he rated highly. (for example, even if I thought the previews and such for a show looked amazing, it would immediately go to my trash pile unless/until someone I know recommended it if Zac said it was good)

if Zac said it was good
Zac is a weird guy. If he's anything like Jacob/Hope said about losing money bybeing in a horrible living situation, he must be an insuffrable asshole to be around. I make the mistake of listening to the ANN podcast and his rapport with Lynzee is strange. He shoots down anything she says, has a self righteous laugh whenever he talks shit about a movie or show. The opening of the podcast is now movie reviews and awkward recreations of them. He thinks 'Ready or Not' is movie of the year since it takes on capitalism and the rich? How much weed was he smoking? It was okay. The trailer gave everything away and reminded me of 'You're Next' but it's not a better movie than 'Parasite.' Also, an odd observation is that Lynzee never brings up her husband and rarely mentions her kids whenever he asks her what she's been doing. Is he jealous and set up what she can or cannot talk about? Also, he's in love with Masaaki Yuasa and treats everything he does as the gospel truth. He gushes on about 'Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!' being about art for the sake of art, but rambles on a navel-gazing rant like the failed movie critic he is.

These weeb degenerates have even worse "failed critic syndrome" than games "journalists." What a bunch of utterly pathetic people.

They can’t even get the lines right. 1989 he was a teacher.

Assuming they're including that baseless claim from the one chick that wasn't even in the same state as him where she said he used his teacher authority to do the unspeakable.

The chick who badly photoshopped his head onto a picture.

The unspeakable of, her saying no, him stopping and asking her to leave.
such horror, which never even happened.
