This seems to have mostly killed people who might as well have died from a stiff breeze and it seems pretty survivable otherwise. The WHO has declined declaring this an international emergency. I like apocalyptic headlines as much as the next guy but I don't see the big deal. The flu is worse. If some of the higher ups would seriously worry about this, you'd read a lot more "everything is fine" and a lot less "the end is near".

The post sheds light to Wuhan's current lack of masks and hospital space, Weibo decided to nuke the account, a doctor then chimes in with a reality check... ie what the poster said was true.
830 verified, 25 dead. Among 830, 177 are fatal ones.
Henan citizens hold up checkpoints, intercepting all Wuhan cars.
Patients treating doctors as subhumans. Doctor hands patient a mask, patient rips doctor's mask off and spits in doctor's face, saying "if I'm gonna die, you all should too".
Doctor now quarantined. It's said that the patient has just a normal fever so there's nothing to worry about.
Needless to say, I'm sure 1.4 billion won't care if patients like this are thrown into blast furnaces.

Coworkers discussing this like it's going to be the end of humanity at work today because the tabloids told them. One linked me an article about a case reaching our country... only for me to read the article and see that the man was discharged from hospital because he didn't have the fucking virus at all.

Because of Mao's Cultural Revolution, children lost the oppurtunity to attend school because the old fuck thought they were too privileged to lead the nation to true communism. He closed all the country's institutes and sent their students out to the rural boonies to become re-educated as people of agriculture. Indoctrination camps, basically. Kids were forced to go through miserable conditions to become right and proper peasants, solely devoted to the CCP.
The problem was, it ended up working too well; the Red Guard (kids who have fully bought into Mao's ideology) rose to power and initiated an anti-intellectualist and anti-cultural rampage; when they weren't destroying historical artifacts and burning down anything considered private property, they're ratting out teachers, parents, and fellow students under suspicion of capitalist thinking, or for reading a book that wasn't the Little Red One. So you've got a whole bunch of hillbilly teens holding everyone else on a leash, torturing and humiliating them for not being good little commies, all fully endorsed by the Chairman. It was only when the Red Guard threatened to further devolve into an outright mob and began attacking the government itself did Mao realize he made a big oopsie, and promptly ordered his army to disassemble the group and send them off to be re-re-educated to tone them down a notch.
To make a bunch of gabble into a readable sentence, the Lost Generation was millions of unfortunate kids in the mid-1900s who lost their chance at a normal, functioning childhood, some of them having been completely mind-wiped by the CCP.

Jesus. The comment about the officials celebrating while the city faces plague reminds me of what CCP leaders and cadres would do throughout China during the Great Famine, 1958-62. They'd have lavish meals and parties, as well as taking large amounts of the best food and grain for themselves and their families, while millions starved to death. And I'd say should the shit really hit the fan, CCP members and leaders will get first call on medical care, hospitals, vaccines and medication, while the average Chinese gets fucked. Why not, right? "Plenty more where they came from. Fuck 'em."

I ain't really going by tabloids. But I do think this a huge problem and we shouldn't be treating it like it's no issue. The death toll jumped what, 10 again? With 177 possible deaths along the way? It'll probably sky rocket over the weekend and people will be none the wiser.

The way I see it is that it's way safer to assume the worse than to underestimate it.
Worst case, we look silly and have a good laugh about it, worst case you're vomiting blood.
I'm stocking up on supplies now, and although it's a pretty penny, even if nothing comes from this, it's always good to have a emergency kit in general.
