This article showcases several other drag kids, including one dressed up as Divine. I'm a fan of Divine and John Waters films, and I'll admit I watched those movies as a high school kid--- and I still would've found it weird had any of my friends decided to dress up that way. I don't understand how people don't see the difference between a kid who wants to wear dresses and then this particular strain of drag. It would be completely different if it was like "Well, my son loves Sailor Moon, so I let him cosplay as her. Now he usually cosplays female characters like Usagi, but also Elsa, The Princess Bride, and other costumes girls like." A kid as young as 12 shouldn't even know who Divine is, or at least not beyond seeing a funny poster in a (regular, non-porn) dvd store.
I can't stand how things always have to be one extreme or the other. Either you accept all this type of shit or you're a complete Nazi? That doesn't make any sense. It's not unreasonable to say "Well, it became clear that my son was gay from an early age, and we're okay with that. He wanted to play dress up and take some funny pictures, but we decided not to put those online because they could be used for nefarious purposes no matter how innocent they are." How is it not obvious to some people that there's clearly other motivations at play here? This doesn't show me "accepting, loving parents of a gay/queer child", if anything, it shows that people are more comfortable with exploiting kids that were already at a higher risk for exploitation in the first place.
Desmond doesn't express himself the way a gay child actually would. I'm sure as kids we all occasionally met another child who was obviously "different", or perhaps some of us were that kid themselves. There's a world of difference between a conversation like "Mum, what's a lesbian?" "It's when two girls get married." "Why do they do that?" "Because they like each other" "Oh ok" rather than letting said child watch adult-oriented shows like The L Word or Orange is the New Black. Or this. She's exposed him to the most adult side of gay culture without (hopefully) just straight up showing him gay porn. None of these kids act like normal children who just happen to be gay. If anything, this is just as bad as the kids who get thrown out of the house by judgmental parents, if maybe not even worse.
