Maybe this is too optimistic, but I don't think there will ever be another super plague like the Spanish Flu, and certainly not like the Black Death - at least where there is modern medicine and hygiene practices.

The Black Death was in a time when rats freely mingled with people, and the Spanish Flu happened in a time when there was better hygiene and medicine (yet not as good as today) - so they were more lethal.

Way too optimistic. If anything the next superbug will be far worse due to rapid travel. Unless technology solves the problem somehow.

SCMP has an article about face masks completely killing their facial recognition system. Not that it matters when they are tracking your phone 24/7, but still.

There was a big thing a few years ago about them rolling out submillimeter sensors for subdermal scans, which would produce the most accurate results by reflecting points on the skull. Theoretically, that would compensate for the mask problem.

Like a few other things, the sensors I've seen appear to be for show. Haven't seen evidence of one actually being used, but China is a big place.

If there's a group of people I feel really bad for, it's the doctors and nurses on the ground. Those people have been grinding away for weeks on end, near-burnout (if not already), risking a potentially deadly sickness only to be treated like shit by their patients and government.

They are the true heroes in this situation.

China has an awful patient to doctor ratio. US is around 400:1 while China is ~5,000:1, and that ratio is far worse if you exclude the tier 1 and 2 cities.
