Glorious ABC news article about the latest cases and the new travel restrictions.
Fourth coronavirus case confirmed in Victoria, SA announces first two cases in Wuhan couple (Archive)
"
South Australia has confirmed its first two cases of coronavirus and Victoria its fourth, bringing the national total to 12.
Saturday's three new cases came as Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced DFAT had raised its travel advice for China to its highest level, urging Australians not to travel to the country. (Archive)
Australia has also imposed strict restrictions on people coming from China, with exceptions given to Australian citizens, residents and their immediate family."

If Taiwan and South Korea are up to date on the Johns Hopkins map, then we topped them with 12 confirmed cases. Nice!

if you work an airport or port city, in a crowded place, order an n99 Cambridge mask
Maybe a week ago, they've been sold out for a few days, and sold out of normal people sizes for even longer. Chinlets rise up.

Where I am, it's too late to go shopping for basic infection control stuff. There's no hand or laundry sanitiser, no bleach and absolutely no masks in stores now. Even normal antibacterial soap and surface wipes seemed pretty low in stock today.
I'm mostly with you on this being very hyped up, but it's exciting at least.

there's a reason I gear up like a spaceman when I'm cutting into someone who ate British beef. prions are nastier things than any virus. and "bushmeat" (venison, game) is bad worldwide- CWD in deer and elk in the US and Canada is a disaster waiting to happen.
Indeed. Beyond the risk of it spreading naturally, there was a misanthropic would-be terrorist a couple decades back who speculated about the possibility of spreading CWD by leaving contaminated meat in places deer would eat it (they will eat meat where they can get the opportunity).

It would tend to primarily affect decent people, though, so those interested in engaging in such an action are going to be limited in number.

Can you link anywhere selling Cambridge n99’s for 20bucks? Everywhere I look is either sold out or horrifically bloated in price

Sent some to a friend just yesterday direct from amazon, filthy capitalist that I am. I think they were closer to 30 with shipping and all that.

looking now- hot pink/ugly Cambridge are at 30, vogs are at 35. the normal colors are indeed sold out.

It didn't even need that kind of help.

The hot zone for CWD is the North Central US. there's a particular area that's completely infectious- almost half the wild game tested (required by that state) pop positive. that area?

it's where attractant is produced in deer farms, which abut on forested wildlife areas. that's right, doe urine is being produced for national sale in the middle of the fucking hottest area.

that's not even taking into consideration the pretty large number of out of state hunters who head home with their meat undressed, to other states, before the testing even comes back. they go to their own local processor, and the offal is offloaded back home. Washington, Oregon, every Midwest state and most of the Atlantic region are all bringing positive CWD results, yet not all these states have implemented testing.

it takes very little for it to spread, it's more easily transmitted than mad cow, for example.

imagine if we had more variety in our wildlife.

I've known people to eat everything- squirrel, raccoon, rats, snake, gator. and so on.

Today is probably fake news day, lots of fake news.

01/02/2020 dump

First, more information on the 8 who were arrested last year for spreading rumours.
1580558688069.png

All 8 of these individuals were in some kind of medical expert group. One of them handled a case of pneumonia. He decided to investigate and found striking similarities between the virus and SARS. He also thinks the virus is highly infectious. Subsequently, he decided to post on some international forum asking for advice, to which the officials of Hubei decided himself, along with the other 7 experts involved were criminals worthy of arrest, and a mere act of asking constitutes rumour spreading. Spreading rumours is actually a crime in China.

The law was made as a response to some idiot. There was this idiot, after Tangshan Earthquake, decided was a good idea to go into the streets and yell about an incoming earthquake. This act killed 22 people or so. That's more than an average "mass shooting". People got scared, jumped off their apartments and stuff. There was also this woman who ran out naked and later killed herself because of how shameful it was. Do I agree with such a policy? Fuck no, it's retarded. CCP shills will argue about China being big and how there's plenty of people... some bad rumours could bring extreme public unrest... blahblah. That Aussie prankster who pretended to be a terrorist throwing shit around was jailed for like 3 months too... yeah whatever sure. This should be treated on a case by case basis, not written into law. The law will only further reinforce conformity and punish wrong think. Of course, I can't argue against the politicians of Hubei being fucking tards, but such a law is stupid. We have slander laws and antisocial laws, what's the point of rumour laws?

There's also a ton of fake news circulating, along with massive scandals involving Chinese Red Cross. They have been exposed for staging interviews and potentially stealing medical funds.
Colour me surprised. The colour is red.

Here's someone warning people about a SARS-like virus on the 30th of Dec, 2019. Not sure if this is fake or not.
"Don't visit Huanan Seafood Market (suspected outbreak spot of the virus)". Many people there contacted SARS like pneumonia. We have taken in numerous patients from that market with this weird illness."
"Also wear a mask, make sure there's air flow".
"Roger that, thanks madam"... etc

Also apparently a new virus carried by ticks is discovered in Japan. I'll have to verify it first. Ticks do carry deadly viruses.

The photo is this guy: Now that sounds very fucking German. Also the green boxes of the medicine in the photoshot is a composite.
He's a virologist with contributions towards combating AIDS. His Chinese name is completely different.

"雙黃連" is the whatever herb drink that's present above.
It literally means "double yellow consecutive"
However, 黃, being the colour yellow, also refers to obscenity.
So it becomes "two obscene (films) consecutively".
It becomes unfunny when someone tries to explain it. Native speakers of the language will understand.

No country poses a greater, more severe, and long-term threat to our national security and economic prosperity than China.

China’s goal, simply put, is to replace the United States as the world’s leading superpower, and they’re breaking the law to get there.

Massachusetts is a target-rich environment with world-class academic institutions, research facilities, hospitals, cleared defense contractors, and start-ups. And each and every one of them are in danger of having their research, development, and investments stolen right out from under them.

The ruling Communist Party of the PRC wants what we have so they can get the upper hand on us.

And while we are still confronted with traditional spies seeking our state secrets, often working under diplomatic cover, or posing as everyday citizens, I can tell you China is also using what we call “non-traditional collectors” such as professors, researchers, hackers and front companies.

All three individuals charged today are manifestations of the China threat.

Let’s start with the case of Harvard University Professor Dr. Charles Lieber.

Earlier this morning, FBI special agents arrested Dr. Lieber at his office at Harvard University. Shortly after he was taken into custody, we initiated the execution of two search warrants: one at his home in Lexington, Massachusetts, and the other at his office at Harvard.

As alleged, Lieber repeatedly lied—not only to federal agents but to Harvard University, and the National Institutes of Health—about his participation in China’s Thousand Talents Plan and his affiliation with Wuhan University of Technology. Lieber also failed to disclose that he has received millions of dollars from the Chinese Communist government for foreign research.

Back in 2011, Lieber was recruited and employed by the Chinese to conduct scientific research, publish articles in the name of Wuhan University, and recruit top international scientists to work for them as visiting scholars, all the while he was still working at Harvard and receiving millions of dollars in taxpayer funded grants for his research.

Lieber even went as far as signing a five-year agreement to set up a joint nanoscience research lab between Wuhan University and Harvard—without Harvard’s knowledge or consent. And when Harvard finally confronted him about it— he allegedly lied to them.

Now some of that grant money could be in jeopardy, along with the fruits of his research that we’re at risk of losing to China.

It’s a clear-cut case of a conflict of interest, and unfortunately, it’s not an isolated incident.

Just across the Charles River, at Boston University, we found Yanqing Ye acting as an agent for the Chinese government without registering as a foreign power as required by law.

Ye is a lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army—also known as the PLA which is the military arm of the Chinese Communist government.

She lied about her military service in order to enter our country, and she manipulated Boston University to allow her to conduct research there, despite that fact that she was coming from a school that was on the Department of Commerce’s denied entity list.

That school where she studied just so happens to be a top military academy in China that is responsible for modernizing China’s armed forces and designing advanced weapons systems.

While working at BU, we allege Yeh was conspiring with senior PLA officers who tasked her to conduct research on various professors, our military, and assorted Department of Defense grants, while also collaborating with them on research projects that had potential military applications.

Time after time, she was collecting information for China—and even when we caught her red handed on her way out of the country—she continued to lie about it.

Just like Zheng Zaosong, another Chinese national here on a visa sponsored by Harvard University.

Zheng was being paid a stipend by the Chinese Scholarship Council while also working at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center conducting cancer research until we arrested him last month. He’s now charged with trying to smuggle 21 vials of biological material and research back to Beijing and lying to us about it.

When the FBI arrested him last month, Zheng eventually admitted that he stole the vials so he could take them back to China conduct further research and publish the results of that research under his own name.

All of the individuals charged today were either directly or indirectly working for the Chinese government, at our country’s expense.

Make no mistake, the ruling Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China is highly strategic in their approach, and we are deeply concerned about American innovation, research, and cutting-edge technologies ending up in the wrong hands.

The FBI is now investigating China-related cases in all 50 states, including right here in the Boston Division.

But let me be crystal clear: we are not suggesting that all, or even most, Chinese students and visitors are somehow up to no good.

There’s no question that we benefit greatly from foreign researchers in our academic institutions. However, some visitors are exploiting this collaborative environment, and it needs to stop.

Economic espionage and the theft of trade secrets significantly hurts our academic institutions, businesses, jobs, and consumers, resulting in hundreds of billions of dollars in losses every year.

So how do we combat this threat?

It starts with vigilance, and all of us working together. The FBI is devoting a significant number of agents and analysts to counterintelligence investigations, and we’re also partnering more closely with academia and the private sector.

We’re bringing all of our investigative resources to bear to fight the threats we face from China and to protect the security and stability of our nation, our economy, and our way of life for generations to come.

In closing, I’d like to extend my sincere appreciation for the tremendous work done by all the agencies standing before you today. We’re not just standing here side-by-side for this press conference, we’re standing side-by-side every day, both in terms of how we see this threat, and how we coordinate operations between our agencies.

Thank you.
He says that they’re investigating Chinese spying in all 50 states. Wouldn’t it be pretty easy to figure out who the Chinese spies are in say North or South Dakota considering how few Chinese people are there? And what would they be spying on? Missile silos or pay hydraulic fracking technology? I can’t imagine there are many research universities in the Dakota’s.

Yes, the tick virus is... actually fucking real.

Here's a study on another new tick-borne virus.
Oh 2020, year of superbugs, bats, and screeching over the elections. I'll take the former two over the real cancer that's the latter.

Saw this video posted on Weibo of the situation directly outside @Feline Supremacist's house. I can't independently confirm it, but it seems entirely in line with what we know about the situation.

The Dakotas are lily white.

It does appear from information given that these victims endure a 14 day struggle with the virus before dying.

I'd suggest we will see our first fatality out of China within 48-72 hours, and we should see a dramatic rise in the deaths in about 4 days to levels of about a total of 500-700 by 2-3 Feb.

But again, it seems like the mortality rate is known as bodies are easy to see, but cases aren't (hiding, not reported, stay at home etc.). I would be surprised if the mortality rate goes beyond 1.5%.

Then again whats worse, a virus that kills 30% that spreads to 10,000 or a virus that kills 1.5% and spreads to 5 million...lovely choices.

I'm more afraid of people with active measles flying state to state. Transmission rate for that is through the roof and it's just as deadly to vulnerable populations, or more.
Measles has an r0 of 18 or thereabouts.

Yes, the tick virus is... actually fucking real.
yup, ticks are a massive problem. No such thing as a clean tick, their habitats are expanding as the climate warms and as deer and other vectors increase in numbers. Tick bourne stuff is a whole thread in itself, but you’d be absolutely horrified if you fancy going down the tick bourne illness in the USA rabbithole.

Then again whats worse, a virus that kills 30% that spreads to 10,000 or a virus that kills 1.5% and spreads to 5 million...lovely choices.
Add some zeroes. 1918 flu infected 1/3 of the planet.

Relax. Remember, worst case is pneumonia, so if you're in a bad area quarantine yourself, don't stress, eat well, and rest plenty. And if the cough gets worse or you feel any symptoms of pneumonia get profesional help. If you're in the west, contact the authorities asap.

Hamilton bar pulls Corona-coronavirus promotion
| Food editor
House on Hood, which was criticised for promoting a deal on Corona beer with reference to the coronavirus, has discontinued the promotion after being contacted by Lion, which distributes Corona in New Zealand.
A Hamilton bar’s social media promotion offering a deal on Corona beers as long as the deadly coronavirus continued to spread has been pulled at the request of Lion, which distributes Corona in New Zealand.
House on Hood attracted criticism for its Facebook post of two men wearing boiler suits and gas masks while holding bottles of Corona. “Virus or no virus, we still think Coronas are pretty great, so while the pandemic lasts, we’re selling Coronas for just $6.50, all day, every day!!” the post read.
Asked about the promotion, a spokesperson for Lion told The Spinoff: “As Corona’s distributor in NZ, Lion wasn’t aware of the promotion and does not condone it. They have since been in touch with the venue and asked that it be discontinued. The post has also been taken down.”
On House on Hood’s Facebook page, the post has been replaced with one of a Corona bottle wearing a face mask, saying, “Let’s be honest, there are worse things you can catch in Hamilton”, and stating that the $6.50 Corona deal would continue.
The Herald reported that comments on the original post included, “Shame on you guys… It’s not funny at all”; “That’s disgusting. I’m so embarrassed right now” and “You wouldn’t run a ‘$6.50 on all Aussie beers for the entire bushfire season’ so why is this okay?!”
The death toll from coronavirus has risen to 170 in China, where the number of infections has jumped by nearly 30%. There are now more than 7700 cases confirmed worldwide. The foreign affairs minister, Winston Peters, announced today the New Zealand government had chartered an Air New Zealand flight to assist in the evacuation of New Zealanders from Wuhan, the Chinese megacity where the virus is believed to have originated.

John Lawrenson of the Lawrenson Group, which owns House on Hood, was initially unrepentant about the promotion. In a statement to the Herald, he blamed “a small but loud minority of people who get offended by everything and I can always rely on them to get triggered. “I’d just like to say thanks to all the snowflakes for the free advertising and thanks to everyone else with a sense of humour who liked the post.”

In an email to The Spinoff this afternoon, Lawrenson said: “I received a phone call from a colleague at Lion Breweries this morning. He said he was concerned about the perception of Lion, as the NZ distributor of Corona, and asked if I would consider taking the post down. He was very polite and explained his concerns logically and so I agreed to change the wording, but said that I would keep running the promotion.”
He added: “Obviously those directly affected by the virus may feel justifiably aggrieved. While the ad was designed to be liked and shared by the majority of people who enjoy that sort of humour, we were also aware that a small, self-righteous group of the perpetually outraged were probably the ones that were going to get triggered and make this go viral.”

In its statement, Lion added: “There is no connection whatsoever between the coronavirus and Corona beer. The safety of our consumers is our priority. Corona is brewed under the highest quality standards and is safe to be enjoyed by our consumers. The virus name reference to corona, Latin for crown or halo, is due to the shape of the virus which resembles a royal crown or solar corona.”
