Cynicism on the left is a running theme since Kennedy got shot, along with the one-two gutcheck of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr dying back to back and the overall gut check that was the utopianism of the late sixties hippie movement turning out to be a shrill shrieking fraud that went bad really fast.
Adding to this is how the Democrats failed miserably in 1972 when they caved to the hippies and ran McGovern and how nice guy Carter crashed and burnt as President. And how in the 1980s, the Democrats disintegrated into a quagmire of fiefdoms where they ran repeated losers for President that were SJW-like so as to keep that part of the base quiet, while all of the real talent/money being spent, was funneled directly into keeping the House and Senate firmly under Democrat control and the Democrats effectively cutting a deal with Reagan, where they would give Reagan his way in exchange for Reagan keeping the likes of Newt Gingrich in line, as Gingrich was one of the few GOPers in Congress who didn't like how the Democrats had the Congress under control for decades in terms of holding the majority and had started making noise with what would become his clique when Republicans retook Congress in 1994.
By the time the Clintons came along, the Democrat base was willing to sell it's soul to get power and this cynicism grew like a weed due to how the GOP responded by going crazy as well. To the point that you can argue that a lot of the motivation for the coup against Trump being the direct result of Clinton era types who have never EVER forgiven the GOP for how they treated Clinton. Also, by this point you have Gen X and Gen Y/Millennials who grew up with their parents and the media promoting the sixties/hippie movement as an idealistic utopia that we were "denied" and the glorification of the Civil Rights Movement and so much attention focused upon WW2/Holocaust in school to create the idea that WW2 and the Civil Rights Movement were supposed to be the "final battles" between good and evil and then that faggot Lyndon Johnson fucked everything up and cost us paradise by escalating the Vietnam War.
By the time Clinton gets impeached for lying about a blow job, the left started embracing dystopian "the ends justify the means" type view of power. Mainly that the goal of political power is to keep it from the GOP and to make excuses for the Democrats never actually following through on their utopia promises (see Clinton promising to let gays service openly in the military and to basically draft all of the top scientists in the US and funnel millions to them to cure AIDS ala the Manhattan Project; two things Clinton never did do). And as such, it was OK for the Democrats to be corrupt as fuck, because "the other guy was far worse". This was helped by the GOP being in full Clinton Derangement Syndrome mode, to the point that no one wanted to be on the record of saying that Clinton had impeachment coming, because they didn't want to give the GOP the satisfaction of being told they were right.
Then Bush happened and 911 basically making him and the GOP in general, untouchable. The left survived the nightmare of the 2000 election believing Bush was an exceptional individual and them being able to spend four years brainwashing people into thinking of him as a exceptional usurper king but 9-11 made him an untouchable golden god who used the sympathy and 100+ stat boost to start a war in Iraq. And the media sucked his dick non-stop and the left couldn't even get a show on freaking MSNBC, who famously cancelled all of their liberal themed shows after the second Iraq war started.
The Bush Wars ultimately broke the brains of a TON of liberals/lefties due to the utter impotence they felt under Bush. The rank and file establishment however were still holding out hope of "Hillary is coming", as during the darkest days of the Bill Clinton impeachment, the establishment and their money men and elites on the left made a corrupt bargain with Hillary: she would stay with Bill and publicly stand by her husband and in return, get both a career in the Senate but also the Presidency and lead to a Clinton restoration. To the extent that Hillary further broke the idealism of the left by explicitly voting for the war in Iraq because she thought it was in the best interest of her Presidential ambitions since a vote against it would be used as a hatchet against her by the GOP (which backfired big time as Obama instead used the pro-war vote against her).
Then Obama happened with hope and change, capturing the Millennial vote and winning against Hillary's "Member Berry" campaign and against McCain and Palin.
But the economy took a shit and died right before the election and it led to Obama siding with wall street over main street. Furthermore, Obama turned out to be a fraud on the hope and change department and Obamacare turned out to be a monkey's paw of half-measures that made no one happy. And the right wing full tilt cray-cray, even more so than they did under Clinton in the 90s and combined with the left being drunk on power, when full tilt evil cynical in terms of making establishing the 1000 Year SJW Reich the only thing that mattered and Hillary in particular, the vehicle to do so since unlike Obama, Hillary had no qualms about abusing power to crush her enemies real and imaginary since unlike Obama, there was no stigma where the first woman president had to be June Cleaver whereas the first black President had to be super safe and non-threatening to everyone. And since Hillary lost and the left STILL can't own up to the failures of Obama or how they got on their knees to suck him off, all they got left is their cynicism and hate to keep them going.
I thought the first time the left tried to go with the BAMN/"End justify the means" method was during the Weather Underground and the New Left, in the 70's.
