Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Funny. When I re-did the thing the E scores were much better.
Between AY862402.1 and MN997409.1 subrange 21697:23074, using blastn, that same match has E=2E-111 with 68% identity

But sure, that guy intentionally mixed up AY862402.1 which is a SARS spike protein plasmid (which of course has good match with coronaviruses) and AF334399 which is the empty backbone he linked to in the blogpost.
The E-value is in part dependent on the size of the sequence you're looking at. So depending on the subrange you use that value will def differ. This is what I was probably poorly explaining in the edit note lol. the subrange I used was based on a pic presented in the article, though it's probably better to look at the entire sequence because in retrospect I'm not sure he actually meant to highlight that specific region.

It doesn't actually change the result because the identity is such garbage. A good E-value is worthless if the number of matches is lower than you're interested in. In this case it simply means that the 68% matches it did find are more likely to be genuine rather than occurring by chance. Cool to know, but having so few matches doesn't bode well for arguing that they're the same sequence, so whether or not those few matches are of good quality doesn't improve your argument.

Conversely, you could have two completely identical but short alignments e.g.:
T A T A T A
T A T A T A
And this would have a very high (AKA insignificant) E-value, because the likelihood of that happening by chance is relatively high. This is why E-value alone is not an indicator of the strength of a match. Identity % is important to frame why you should care. Hope that makes sense.

I mean yes but part of it has to be related to the fact that it has a threshold. If China is locking down cities and preventing people from travelling to other places then once that city has reached the maximum number of people infected living within it and they aren't allowed to leave- it has to stagnant- if they're actually doing what is being claimed because it will either infect everyone or eventually run out of hosts available to infect.

I'm curious though. 12 People in Germany and one of those is the guy whose Kid went back to school, who IIRC from following the thread was found to have it fairly early (and what about the person who infected him?). What is the status of that guy? Is he better? Recovering still? Is he in ICU? Were his symptoms Mild? Moderate? Really bad? The same for all the people outside of China, the map gives cases and doesn't really address how they're recovering or the severity of their symptoms if they developed them. The whole tracking website doesn't really help in figuring out what exactly 'recovered' means when it comes to this outbreak. I know it can cause pneumonia but not having anything concrete on how fast it is onset, the severity of those symptoms, etc. Seems weird to me. We have no rates on age or sex and how it differs between the two either.

You'd think if it's even more deadly than what China is providing for numbers that we'd see more dead in the ones that are outside the country.

This sounds familiar... really really familiar...

No, the Chinese also eat dogs, bats, centipedes, and apparently just about everything that's made of meat. Don't look up the videos of how they "prepare" the canines though, unless you like the feeling of boiling blood.
Each other as well, because of a history of starvation time and time again.

Wang Mang, the original Chicom before communism was even a thing, was deposed and eaten, although this was done more so as an insult. If Mao ever was overthrown, you bet they would've eaten his fat ass and every inner party Pooh Bear.

We have had lots of Chinese folks in the US ever since they came over to help build the transcontinental railroad in the nineteenth century. They're pretty much American at this point but the influx of mainland Chinese that was ramped up in the nineties is on a whole other level and while some of them bring their exceptional taste for weird food and hygiene the real issue is their loyalty to the CCP.
Relatively speaking maybe, but realistically, not really. A lot of them went to Canada for lesser discrimination, and even there they were unassimilable. Even so, they hate new arrivals the most, just like Jews hate Ultra-Orthodox ones and blacks hate Caribbean Islanders.

Cruise ships are a petri dish for disease. All crammed in together, often indoors with piped air, shared eating and entertainment facilities. Wu Flu could rip through that population the way diarrhea does after a contaminated buffet. Not to mention it's older people who tend to take cruises, the flu's primary victims.

That, plus the fact that it's 10 confirmed cases out of 31 results returned so far from a total of 273 samples taken to date. Not a good ratio for the 3700 people on board. They are going to have to stay on petri dish together for the next 14 days.

Shit is medieval.

Except boats full of foreigners trying to dock in Yokohama has historically been Japan's weakness.

It's Koreans who eat dogs. The Chinese, of course, eat rats and eggs hard-boiled in peasant boys' urine.

Also, 5,000th post.

Yup, Koreans sure do eat dogs. Used to see live dogs intended for sale as meat, also saw the bo-shin-t'ang (dog meat restaurant) when I was there.

Whoa...5000 posts, and so many with so much useful information. One amazing collective effort. KFers at their finest, I'd say. 👍

Wuhan doesn't seem to be any hotbed of seismic activity.

Winds don't look to be particularly high in Wuhan for about the next week.

Here's another page with various Wuhan climate charts.

To clarify, the seismic and wind events that are typically designed for are worst case scenarios. They look at the worst conditions in the region in the last 50/100 years and design for that. There’s more nuance to it, but that’s the main consideration.

It’s possible that the hospital is long abandoned before a sufficiently destructive event, but it’s a huge gamble with thousands of lives. The detailing I’ve seen is honestly negligent; it’s creating conditions for a certain structural failure at a much lower threshold than I’d ever be comfortable with.

Thank you very much for your analysis. Have you seen anything that indicates the existence of a drainage system for the site, or water/sewer connections?

I’ve seen pictures for what is at least rainwater drainage. It’s not especially durable or robust, but it’s definitely there. I can’t for the life of me find the specific picture I saw earlier today of the concrete culverts with corrugated plastic piping, but I did find are a few other pictures showing them installing utilities:

Said drainage pipes can be seen in this timelapse, although I’ll try to find the pictures:

It’s worth noting too that we have pictures of the finished rooms:

I grew up in San Francisco, the Bay Area and Northern California has always had a large Chinese population dating back to the Gold Rush. Maybe the HK expats and tech billionaires finally pushed them out but they've always been around, its the Japanese that disappeared during WWII.

California Chinese spoke Cantonese for the most part, a few Fukianese and Ningpo here and there. No one spoke mandarin unless they came from Mainland China.

Saw a couple myself when I was over there. Hurts to see them in those cages. Had an interesting time when an ajumma told me to fuck off when I was taking out my phone to capture the moment.

Not sure if these are reposted. Still...

This is nuts.

Ain't that the truth?

It's Koreans and Chinese. Also dogs and cats may be eaten in parts of Vietnam, Laos, and a few other bits of Asia. Apparently Taiwanese did eat them, but they banned the practice a few years ago, because their president was a great animal lver who had his own dogs and cats and wasn't standing for that shit.

Cambodia eats dogs that may or may not have rabies.

Granted it's the Daily Mail, but still: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...-slaughtered-meat-drowning-pits-Cambodia.html

That room isn't stopping shit.

Pollution Goblins, you have failed this station.

From the door seals (Seriously, THOSE are the fucking door seals? I could do a better field expedient one with 20 minutes at Home Deport or 10 minutes on the Amazon site on my phone) which are non-existent and won't protect shit, to that FUCKING CEILING DENT ABOVE THE DUCTING! No real sealant around the fire/CO/whatever alarm. Look at the floor right in front of the lower right door. See that fucking DROP in the flashing? Yeah, that's already separating and is probably an air leak. The upper right door is to a bathroom, which means the bathroom is shared by at least 2 people, and look at the bottom of the door right there in front of the Pollution Goblin Horde motherfucker's boots. See that warp to the frame? That doorframe is already janked. I want to see them close the door after that bed is in place. It's gonna be close at least.

Left side of the picture, toward the top of the wall, you see that flashing? That's for the electrical and has PLENTY of gaps without a single fucking bit of silicon sealant.

That linoleum type right there, on the floor? Not antimicrobrial linoleum, it's the cheap shit you see in 1970's single wide trailer homes across the US South. That fucking pattern should be recognizable to everyone on the Farms as the floor patter dijour of Cows.

Look at the panel above the head of the bed. LOOK AT IT! It's fucking worse than useless.

Far door: Frame has already warped. Outer frame section is already pulling away from the wall.

There is NOTHING isolation system about this fucking thing. Even a low budget Bollywood movie would make a better one with plastic sheeting, a roll of duct tape, and a fucking cave. You'd be better off pouring rubbing alcohol over yourself, wrapping yourself in fucking trash bags, and breathing through a grapefruit rind.

Yeah, if this is where they're supposedly going to be treating people, in a city that is out of medical supplies and running out of everything else, then it's going to be nothing but a corpse house.

At this point I am starting to wonder why and how these pictures are even getting out. I thought their shitty system checked for stuff like this and omitted it. Why was the AP allowed to keep this shot?

Sure seems like the censorship engine is struggling to keep up with the sheer flood of shit coming outta there.

This hospital has huge propaganda value, and every news outlet is gobbling up the fact that they completed this in 10 days.
A few tours of the thing are floating around on social media (a few before completion) and youtube.

Mike,

Believe it's a Potemkin room, to show the foreigners.

Believe other rooms won't be as well-equipped. Still wonder where they'll get all the equipment. Also would like to know how the patients will be fed. One big central kitchen? Several kitchens? A kitchen for each building?

Another area of concern - laundry. Don't see any linen on the Potemkin beds.

I can use some help on this one - are sheets changed every day for patients in the hospital? Last time I was in the hospital was in no condition to even think about that. In the USA, like most advanced countries, the hospital would either do their own laundry, with a commercial setup, or send the laundry out. So I wonder how the additional laundry will be done. For a hospital of 1600 beds you are talking a lot of laundry.

Looking at JetFuelJohnny's critique of the Potemkin room, can only imagine what the regular rooms, which foreigners will never see, will be like. No, this gives me no warm fuzzy at all. I keep thinking about all the deficient areas. The Chinese badly wanted this hospital built, and they now have a badly-built hospital.

Uncle Joe

@BatSoupReviews - Many young people died in the setup at the top of the picture. It can hardly be expected that the setup at the bottom of the picture will be much better. Once that place fills up, you wouldn't want to be there, not even to observe, things will be that bad.

@MrFaget - That could be someone's plan - send so much stuff out that some of it will get to the outside world, unfiltered. Would be a valuable addition to the unofficial accounts. Everything is a piece of the puzzle. You just have to recognize the piece then determine where it fits into the puzzle.

Because it's good propaganda.

Since these "hospitals" were announced, I've seen people from all sides to use it as an example. First, you have the leftists who love suck communist dick saying this is much, much better than Capitalism. And then, you have the common shitposter who hates their country comparing it with "China's efficacy" because they don't know their government isn't to trust. Here, as our president is a progressive, the Right has been using it as "lol, China can do in ten days what he didn't do in one year!".

It's good propaganda and the Chinese government knows it.
