So, what should I make of this situation as far as doing something to prepare?

Anyway, don't no what to do, or how to feel. Does anyone want to internet hug me?
Calm the fuck down, fam.
No, seriously. I'm not saying that out of autistic rudeness; I'm saying it because people tend to make incredibly bad decisions when they're anxious and afraid, and that you're sick (with what is more than likely just a common cold, or a mild case of non-Wu flu) is not helping. When you're sick, everything seems a lot worse than it is. It just does.
I'd give you an internet hug, but my internet autism forbids it. Sorry.
From here, I'd say you're in a pretty low-risk area. I live in a major West Coast city with lots of Chinese students and 1st/2nd generation immigrants with close ties to China, and I'm not even worried. I wash my hands more often, and refilled all the bottles of hand sanitizer I have in the car and various bags and coat pockets, but that's pretty much it--the same shit I do in any given flu season. We've had one case of Wu Flu in another county, but so far no additional cases have cropped up.
Now, if that changes, I'll revise my plans accordingly, but for now it's merely a potential threat that bears watching, not an active one.
Hanging out here, I seem to be way more informed about the epidemic's progress and the nature of the Wu Flu than anybody else I know (seriously, Kiwis, you're fucking amazing). So I just keep re-assessing the situation on a day-by-day basis, thinking about what I might want to do or acquire if things look like they're going pear-shaped. But until that happens I'm not going to worry about it. Staying mindful is one thing, worry is another, and you want to stay in that first mindset, not the second.
That said, if you do want to stock up on extra non-perishable food in case other people panic and empty the Walmart, buy stuff you like and eat on a regular basis, so it will actually get eaten even if nothing happens. Otherwise, it's just a waste of money and cabinet space. I live in earthquake country, and keep a lot of extra food on hand for when the Big One hits, and I don't buy anything I wouldn't normally eat.
