Gingy has suffered enough. It's cruel to parade his corpse around in boomer memes.

This is the most boring attack ad ever, it's just the words lie and unfair being repeated with dancing gingerbread men. That makes no sense and is just boring. Like Trump being a nazi could grab more attention than being called a liar since every politician lies.

Just think, he likely paid several million dollars for this...

I forget if I've mentioned him here before or not, but my left-leaning friend who I thought was fairly on the level overall might have drunk more of the TDS Koolaid than I thought. Had a chat with him about politics tonight, and I swear, he sounded like he should be wearing a tinfoil hat. No powerleveling in the spoiler, just what we talked about.
Despite agreeing that the impeachment trial was handled completely ineptly, not only did he claim that the Senate refusing to do the job the House was supposed to do by calling more witnesses was treasonous, he argued that the whole thing was a setup by the powers that be so that...Trump could just never be impeached again, or something? I dunno, he was repeating the standard lefty talking points and I've heard enough of those to where I just start glazing over.

Then he claimed that Trump has done a billion things that he should have been impeached over already, that he's basically doing everything short of murdering people on live TV. Again, standard leftist claims: bought by Russia, kids in cages, etc. He also repeated the current meme about how Trump will refuse to step down if he isn't reelected, or he'll run again in 2024 because nobody will stop him. Pointed out the 22nd Amendment would stop that, but he was like "Trump will just ignore it, he doesn't care."

Of course he's a supporter of Uncle Boiney, and when I brought up the hypocrisy of a self-described commie living a life of luxury on the taxpayers' dole, he just brushed that aside with talk of the Emoluments Clause, something that literally nobody in this fucking country had ever heard of prior to Trump's presidency. Should've brought up Burlington College, but alas, wasn't thinking about it at the time. Also should've brought up how Boiney's campaign was buying hundreds of copies of his "best-selling" book when he mentioned that was part of how he made his money. Hindsight.

He also talked about how Trump will say anything, but Boiney has been consistent for decades, how you can go back thirty years and he's saying the same thing. I mentioned that you could do the same with Trump (the NYT ad he took out about NAFTA, I think?), and he immediately dismissed it, claiming that that didn't count.

I told him that maybe he's just being a bit too paranoid, and that things really aren't all that bad if you just take a look around and get out of the leftist bubble (online, that is; we live in a fairly red area). I talked about how I talk to people of a variety of viewpoints (didn't specifically bring up the farms but this is where I meant), and how the general feel is that the sky isn't falling. Like yeah, Trump's not perfect, but we're doing alright. I feel like he wanted to yell "WAKE UP SHEEPLE" at me, but he just went on and on about how things really are horrible and Trump is a madman and shit will hit the fan any day now, just you wait and see.

In case you're wondering, yes, he gets all his news from Reddit. I told him to get off of there, but he says he only uses it as a news aggregator and doesn't really look at the comments, though he admits that there is an echo chamber there. Another thing I should have pointed out there was that the only stories that would get upvoted on Reddit would be those that support that worldview, but I'm less good when it comes to real-time discussion.
So yeah. We're not about to stop being friends or anything, but I hate how TDS can affect even people you thought were more sensible than that. I told him that if shit actually does hit the fan, I'll admit he was right. Yet somehow I doubt that if another Trump term doesn't end with the world on fire, I'll get the same from him.

The delusion is so deep at this point that I expect actual suicides. How the fuck did it get so bad?
Most of them do not believe nearly this hard.

What you are seeing is primarily performative. They want digital head-nods and to be kept in the tribe where they feel safe and doing it online is extremely easy since everyone can invent half a persona and do it on their 15-minute break on their phones. You don't need consistency or fact-checking on social media because as long as you keep to the prevailing message in your circle no one is going to call you out, and if anyone from outside the circle calls you out then you don't need to worry about it because they're part of Them, not You, and if they keep it up you can always dogpile them.

If just 5% of those people cared as much as they claim to we'd see far more political action, but we don't because when they go home at the end of the day and go to bed they aren't losing sleep over how America is on a descent from which it will never return. They either don't care or or don't care nearly as much. This is why laughing at them and telling them to calm down riles them up so much; it strikes right at the heart of their insecurity of not being taken seriously because they themselves know they're not taking things that seriously, so mockery just calls them out while getting onlookers to do the same and then move on.

Performative politics keeps eyes where they want them. Why else would they throw progressively greater tantrums when people stop paying attention?

How can we trust a president that 4 years later still refuses to share his gamertag? But seriously did this need to be two and a half minutes?

I disagree. I believe these people are genuinely deluded. I think they truly believe every single ridiculous claim stated by the media, every ounce of hypocritical double speak they spew out, and then some. And if you think these people aren't willing to go out of their way for their beliefs, well, just look at Antifa. Call them a bunch of soy-drinking LARPers all you'd like, but it's at least proof that these people are willing to put their lives on the line for their beliefs, delusional as they are.

The reason they do this, of course, is because like all authoritarians, they hate any notion of free thought. They are intolerant to anything resembling compromise. Any individual who so much as steps a single hair's breadth out of line must be converted to their way of thinking whether through persuasion or violence. They will accept nothing less than total control over every aspect of your life, from the way you live to the way you speak and think. And they will do it with a smile, thinking they're doing it for the betterment of mankind.

ANTIFA is a fraction of a fraction. The dramatics and violence of their activities are not the only reason why their ideas have not taken root. They are hardly every blue check mark on Twitter or left-leaning Facebook group screaming just as loud as the Black Flags.

That aside, I agree with you, though I don't quite understand how a group being authoritarian equates to taking direct action. There are plenty of people online who believe in authoritarianism who would never so much as espouse their beliefs aloud in meatspace, and if you don't believe me, just close your eyes and click on a random thread in the main Lolcow sub. You'll find one in about two minutes.

I suppose you do have a point with Antifa being a vocal minority, but Twitter checkmarks and news media will none-the-less play cheerleader for them, praising their victories of ousting the eeeevil Republicans while downplaying their violence and criminal activity.

I think where we differ is how we're defining "direct action." What you're thinking is probably along the lines of protests, marching, and riots. The way I'm looking at them is more along the lines of a religion or cult, where converting the masses is the goal, not protesting in the streets. Hence, even a tweet or blog espousing their beliefs and how anyone who thinks differently than them is a fascist Nazi bigot qualifies as "direct action" in my book.

It's been, what 3 days? Since Iowa had it's caucuses and they STILL can't declare a winner? What did everyone voted for Trump? Is that why they're not saying anything?

I do Uber driving and I can attest, people are the same on social media as they are in their everyday life. I've heard people chatting after hitting the bars about Trump being in bed with Russia and how Pence is against all the gays and so on. Many of these people are putting on a facade for the rest of the world and pretending to be much more sane than they really are. Was a little wild at first when I'd get a group of passengers that disagreed on politics, then after dropping off the lone right winger the others only then launching into the hysteria.

You know that old joke, "I paid my 13 yr old nephew $50 and he made a website for my company"? It's funny because it's often true.

This video is why you don't pay your 13 yr old nephew to make your campaign ads.

For the most part, yes, but I was also talking about voting. National turnout has hovered around 55%, less than +/- 1%, for the last two presidential elections. The current wave of online activism started between those two. People with changed minds try to change things. ANTIFA, the progressive left, the alt-right, whomever can work to change as many minds as they want. If people don't turn thought into action it makes no difference. That's what I'm referring to.

One of the most funny things i found about american politics is believing that social media has some kind of fantastical grip on elections and real life consequences but in reality it doesn't mean anything like 2 countries have already experienced (the britbongs and america) let's put a example, check every tweet of Trump and you get that at best he get 12k-20k replies of rabid idiots and blue checkmarks, at personal level that would be like a lot of traction but in reality 12k-20k lunatics divided in several blue states that no one cares is worthless in a election, you can scream the nazis are going to kill us from your fancy apartment in new york, but new york is blue so in the big electoral map is a loss that can be afforded

And in every defeat you can see "all of my friends say trump is a nazi so pretty sure he is one and he is going to lose" and every time Orange man get a win is "America is full of -ists, haters and Nazis", this election in november should remind them that their followers on twitters does not convert in political capital, stop believing that having 100k followers on twitter is a ton and you are changing the world with your message when in reality only people that think like you are following you and agreeing with you, but what about the other millions that voted for trump? those are the ones that they have to change their minds and in those 4 years their side had not showed anything that can do that

It's wild how easily you can see in real time now how people fit themselves into these bubbles thanks to social media, happened plenty beforehand for various reasons, but now we can see people coming up with charts even for how certain talking points or stories only seem to circulate in right or left wing twitter.

Reminds me a bit of these three passengers I had shortly after the time of the 2016 election, was three guys (think two were probably gay given they lived in the same house). They got to talking about the election with the two gay guys mystified as to how anyone could support Trump, with the other guy piping up only a couple times to mention "well, maybe people liked his economic policies?" and you could feel the tension in the air when he dared utter such a ridiculous thing in their midst as they confidently said how he had no economic policies or anything else and it was terrible anyone would have voted for him.

Then I dropped off the lone possibly right wing guy. The two gay guys then started openly talking to each other about how Pence was so anti gay and was wanting to do electroshock therapy and Trump was such a bigot and with Russia.

Was a little interesting as a ride because I got to hear their views and how they'd hide them in front of the person they saw as part of the out group politics-wise. Can just imagine the gay guys hopping onto social media later or turning on MSNBC and feeling like everyone agrees with their views and thinking it's insanity for anyone to have disagreed with them, leading to them acting just a bit less sane with others.

Well what's wrong with traditional architecture? If you ask me it looks far better than most of the crap modern architects built to desecrates cites.
So here are some examples of why traditional architecture is simply better.

As you can see this stuff looks far better than the crap that modernist architects built.

This is just further proof that these people have no taste in anything good at all.
Brutalist, modernism, and postmodernism are plagues on the art world and I will say that to my dying breath. YOU SHOULD'VE STAYED IN PHILOSOPHY AND ART CRITIQUE, YOU ESPECIALLY POSTMODERNISM.

Now gimme my hats.

Like I said, I experienced it myself last night with my friend. We usually don't talk politics because we just don't like to, and we know that we each lean to opposite sides of the spectrum. I guess it's for that reason that I was shocked at how consumed he was by the leftist dogma, going on about all the horrible evil things that it's so obvious Trump is guilty of and how we're this close from Trump declaring himself dictator for life because anyone can see he's a complete psychopath. And if I had the audacity to say that maybe things aren't nearly that bad, he just couldn't fathom that I would think that way because everyone he talks to online is saying the opposite, so clearly his must be the correct worldview.

Really drives home Scott Adams's "one screen, two movies" analogy for me. We're looking at the same world but seeing two totally different realities.
Brutalist, modernism, and postmodernism are plagues on the art world and I will say that to my dying breath. YOU SHOULD'VE STAYED IN PHILOSOPHY AND ART CRITIQUE, YOU ESPECIALLY POSTMODERNISM.

No, I agree with you. Blocky lumps of concrete are way less beautiful than classical architecture, and I applaud Trump for sticking up for the classics.

If you want a thunk-provoker, the friend I've been talking about adores brutalist architecture. Say about that what you will.
