It's one thing to code a really hacky script or program for a microcontroller because nowadays it doesn't matter. Processors are so fast your 3mb file is going to run no matter what.
Doing the same to a 3d game affects the performance (as we can see) but more importantly by using a shitty approach the game can't be fixed or modified easily.
It's important to note I don't know shit about shit, but this thread got me thinking about coding and unity.
If/else isn't inherently wrong, and it can be used in conjunction with Unity's state machine. Run all the minor NPCs off a state machine and the script uses if/else checks to call certain actions. Because the if/else statements don't actually control the behaviour directly you only would have to modify the state machine to make AI changes.
Like, for an alpha I really can't see why you wouldn't code a single state machine for the unimportant NPCs and then just use a random number system so they execute the actions at slightly different times and in different orders.

That would likely be due to poor Unity resource/asset management, and possibly not compressing imported resources. I'm not familiar with Unity and have barely done some of the tutorials, but I've gotten used to some of the quirks commonly seen in Unity games that seem to repeatedly come up with newer developers. One of those quirks is file sizes that are much larger than they actually need to be. For instance, the November 2019 build of Yandere Simulator is about 2.14 GB on my drive, while the compressed file I downloaded and extracted the build from is 1.07 GB. That's bad, but not actually the worst case I've seen which was something like a 120 MB or so compressed file becoming around 1.2 GB uncompressed. Once that developer got beyond the "proof of concept" phase and got more familiar with Unity, there's hardly a difference between the filesize of the game itself and the compressed download that's distributed.
Obviously, I don't think we'll see that happening with Yandere Simulator in our lifetimes.
