Interesting article:
Rural areas step up efforts against epidemic

Villages in China should strengthen efforts to guide farmers to conduct spring plowing work properly and push the toilet revolution to maintain hygiene in villages, which is critical to controlling the coronavirus epidemic, China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) said on Tuesday.

Experts and officials reached by the Global Times said the outbreak won't affect farmers' spring plowing, but the shortage of medical resources and lack of preventive awareness might hinder epidemic control.

Officials said at a press conference on Tuesday that farmers will be guided properly in this year's spring plowing work on the premise of fully protection. Massive gatherings will be avoided and the off-peak mode will be encouraged.

He Xuefeng, director of the China Rural Governance Research Center at the Wuhan University, told the Global Times that the epidemic has yet to create a huge impact on farmers because February is only the time when most farmers make preparations for plowing and sowing. Most regions in China will not start harvesting until March.

Luo Yameng, a Beijing-based urban and rural management expert, told the Global Times on Tuesday that the epidemic would benefit this year's spring plowing as a lot of young and middle-aged laborers were stopped from going out to cities to work. They will stay in their rural hometowns.

Epidemic control in rural areas faces various difficulties such as limited medical resources, lack of preventive awareness, and the habit of frequently visiting relatives, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said on Tuesday at the press conference.

To address the problems, the ministry said the allocation of medical and sanitary supplies will consider rural areas. China has 1.44 million village doctors, which could cover the needs of epidemic prevention. China is enhancing the training and guiding for rural doctors to improve their medical capacity and working efficiency, according to the press conference.

The Chinese government will intensify publicity like initiative letters, on television, radio and new media to strengthen the popularization of health and hygiene in villages, the ministry said.

He Bin, an official at the ministry, noted the efforts in pushing the "toilet revolution" in rural areas, which is critical to epidemic control. He said that by the end of the year, the transformation and rectification of rural household toilets will be completed in East China and some places in the middle and west of the country.

The toilet revolution is a long-term job of local officials in villages. The open dry pail latrine in residential house in the township will be replaced by water closets, which maintains hygiene and curbs the spread of coronavirus through feces, Hu Bin, an official from Heguo township, North China's Hebei Province, told the Global Times.

Experts had warned that the novel coronavirus could be transmitted through the digestive system as they found 2019-nCoV nucleic acids in patients' stools.

The MARA is also conducting village-cleaning operations by strengthening the management of livestock and poultry breeding as well as waste water discharging, guiding residents to clean their living environment.

Similar to big cities, where residential communities are locked down, the measure to curb the spread of the virus, such as closing off villages and main roads, has also been rolled out in rural areas in provinces like Henan, Guizhou, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

"To minimize the residents' travel frequency, our villages have also dispatched teams to purchase and deliver goods door-to-door for villagers," Hu Bin said.
So as you can see, Chinese farmers are almost neck-to-neck with pajeets when it comes to hygiene and sanitation, the only difference being a "designated shitting latrine".

One can't really fault them, since decades and decades of brainwashing has turned them into human locusts. They don't know any better. But it turns out that it dawns on the government that mayhaps, we should teach the lowest-of-the-low class some basic hygiene in order to stop the spread of the virus! what a marvelous idea!

...It had to get this fucking bad for them to do something about it, for fuck's sake.

Depending on the situation, municipal water can actually go a long time without maintenance. The systems are extremely simple to keep under pressure and not a lot can fail on the supply side compared to most other utilities. Power is the most likely to fail first, and water will often run without local power for a while until on-site generators or gravity-fed reservoirs run down (probably not in a big city like Wuhan though).

Am sure you are right. However, doubt tap water in Wuhan was potable even before all this started. How about the sewer/water treatment systems?

Speaking of power generators, remember something from the book Earth Abides. Came out late 1940's. A disease sweeps throughout the world, killing people very quickly. A few survivors remain. Protagonist of the book, named Isherwood Williams, lived in Oakland. He made it back home from his scientific research trip, where a rattler had bitten him and the venom saved him from dying of the disease.

Power was still on, all over the San Francisco Bay Area. Came from water-powered generators. Power eventually went out when oil supplies within the generators ran out. Need to take care of power plant workers, especially those working in nuclear power plants.

So they're just going to stop reporting anything, and reopen the ports for trading aren't they? If it isn't reported, it doesn't exist after all.

So, does anyone think we'll ever see accurate counts of how many died?

Not outside of an intelligence facility.

Here's a crazy idea...

North Korea is dead silent about the wuflu. Maybe too silent. The virus basically has them surrounded, and we're supposed to believe that it didn't make it into NK? no way.

Really makes you think.

Edit: nevermind, answered my own question.

Yea right, like they're gonna say anything. But then...

Just 5? hmmmm. We should keep an eye on NK.

If you are in need for anything in appliances, electronics, or tools. Get them now.
I started doing this over the weekend with tools and supplies I use in my work and hobbies. Even if these things don't actually come from China, their manufacturers' supply chains are likely to include Chinese sources. There's also some hardware and other materials I'll need for a home improvement project this spring/summer, so I'm just going to buy those now.

When I told my mom this, she paused and said, "That's the most convoluted excuse for a big trip to the bead warehouse I've ever heard. But you do you, honey."

If everything goes to hell, I'm covered. If everything doesn't go to hell, it's cool because I would have bought and used these things anyway. It's not much different from my approach to buying food and necessities for earthquake preparedness--buy what you normally eat/use, but keep a lot of extra on hand.

I'm also replacing my aged and dying phone this week, instead of waiting until April as I'd planned. So if everything goes to hell, I can still shitpost here. Because that's the most important thing, right?

Haha I never thought I'd see someone reference that book. I read it too, and I vividly remember the venom fever scene in the intro.

Personally, I predict China will take military control of facilities if they need to. The sewer system will probably last the longest without maintenance, because it's basically gravity fed, but it will just start to outflow into the rivers if treatment plants aren't running. This being China it probably flows straight down into lowland rivers to begin with. Plus they shit and piss in the streets already, just not as much as Indians.

The real worry is food. How do you feed 11 million people when nobody can come or go?

NK has a long, long history of underreporting shit like this, so I expect them to treat it like China did, 2 months ago.

We've been. Last weekend was their big annual anniversary of the Glorious Peoples Army or whatever it's called. It's the annual shindig where they parade every piece of military hardware and goose stepping gooks they have past Dear Leader. We always get loads of propaganda pictures of it. This year it was cancelled suddenly at the last minute. Fat Boy has not been seen in weeks. "NOTHING TO SEE HERE! BEST KOREA IS ALL FINE! NO DEADLY SUPERPLAGUE WHATSOEVER! DO NOT BELIEVE EVIL CAPITALIST RUMORS! (and for fuck sake don't eat the dead!) "

It's stuff like this that only adds fuel to the stereotype... chinamen being nasty fucks.

Don't come crying "muh racism" when people have more legitimate concerns about slants.

Heck, I'd say multiply that many times. Believe there are other areas locked down, too.

But let's step back a bit. Feeding 1.4 billion people is a very complex task. There are a ton of moving parts in the food chain, if you will. And it isn't just getting the food to the consumer. Farming of any level greater than pure subsistence farming depends on the farmers getting inputs such as fertilizer, seeds, equipment, fuel, and veterinarian services. The disruption of the farm-to-consumer chain also means disruption in the factory-to-farmer chain. Things must flow in both directions, and China has little margin for fuckups. Just too many people eating to establish large reserves, in contrast to the USA, where we can't eat all we produce.

These disruptions won't just affect one area, but there can be ripple effects throughout the country, to varying extents. There are already major ongoing problems with the African Swine Flu and the avian flu in China. Lots of pigs dead/dying, lots of chickens dying. Lots of pork, eggs and poultry, all sources of protein, gone. Nowayou have a virus that is likely to affect X number of farmers and farm families.

When you think about it, this pandemic affects many things, things people usually take for granted. But the more you look at the web of support services people need, the more you see just how vulnerable that web is. When that web is disrupted or wrecked, people are going to die - second-order deaths.

Oh, and nobody truly lives "off the grid". Even homesteaders need certain products, such as medicine and equipment, at times.

Maybe all of us need to read or re-read Earth Abides. Doubt things will get anywhere near that level, but you can see how people coped, or didn't cope. Book in print, easily available on Amazon.

With regards to North Korea... posted about NK Penal Colony 25 a while ago. Take this with a grain of salt, nothing is confirmed.

There's a rumor the colony is being used to test vaccines on live subjects. They closed the borders on Jan 1, trucks and construction equipment were coming into the camp around that time.

What do you think the most likely scenario is:

- People escaping Wuhan made their way to North Korea, to take advantage of the first class hospital system and see to their health.

- A vaccine was being tested, people started dropping dead, and a guard bugged out, only to infect the NK populace

Not sure I believe NK allowed anyone into China during this period. They do border control right.

A 6 week incubation period from when they closed the border is possible. Unlikely, but possible.

Pajeet anhero's himself over fears of coronavirus

Not even conspiracy theorists have theorized that the disease doesn't actually exist. That's heartening.
Hate to say it but in some other places the conversations are being constantly interrupted by idiots who think this is being elaborately staged to deflect people's attention from whatever their pet conspiracy is-- 'but theyz smart and they ain't bitin'. To be fair, some them also seem to seriously believe in a flat earth, but maybe i'm just not sophisticated enough to understand the quantum level of troll they got goin' on.
