Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Yes - agree completely. It’s also possible that people are still contagious after recovery. Plenty of viruses do this - any of the viruses that cause hand foot and mouth can be shed in faeces for weeks after. Zika amd Ebola are sexually transmissible months after recovery.
There’s a gap in our understanding of how this is getting around. And of course that’s normal for a new emergent disease. The diseases we are familiar with have been studied for a very long time and still sometimes surprise us.

It has to be able to linger in the air doesn't it? The cruise-ship kind of gives us a better idea than China, but only really confirms it, but there's no other way it could spread that fast if it isn't just hanging out in the air after being exhaled and able to cross every possible mucus membrane for expsoure. If it was any other method then keeping people apart and not letting them interact would stop it and even on a cruise ship there's no way one person managed to cough on every single other person or an object touched by every single other person that would result in it spreading the way it has.

Some of what's happening here is just weird. I get pandemics happen and China is the worst place for it but you'd think two months in with concerns about it ballooning on a global scale there'd be some better understanding of it, especially if more developed countries have cases that they can observe and collect samples from. I can't help but wonder if some of the cases being tested are throwing a false positive or picking up other ailments, like an actual common cold or flu, and turning positive for those as well. It's so all over the place. How does one test for Corona anyway?

I know you're being ironic, but the Japanese also did numerous gruesome human experiments on citizens of the west, such as vivisection on captured American soldiers and concentrations camps for Australians. What their military did in WW2 is inexcusable. Not saying the nuking or firebombing is, such acts on innocent people from any government should never be condoned and it's wrong no matter who the perpetrator is or how much you dislike certain countries that got the shorter end. That's also not saying Japanese today should be held accountable, they shouldn't, it has fuck all to do with them, the same goes with Germans who are indoctrinated with "Nazi guilt" from youth. Acknowledge it, don't do it again, and get the fuck over it. War is shit, shit stuff happens during war.

Throughout the dynasties, China hasn't changed much. There's about 5 years of real communism that killed likely 60+ million, it's not like the Chinese didn't have disgusting wet markets and fucked up urge of eating anything sentient before communism. Thievery and scamming has always been a thing too, that's why Chinese merchants are typically portrayed in the same fashion as Jews, throughout history (both portrayals are fucking accurate as well). Communism is a shit ideology that's disastrous, but I won't say it had much of an impact on the country's cultural practices. There's numerous ancient text and paintings citing how delicious fucking disease riddled creatures such as mice and civets are.

That said, China's stupid censorious laws assisted the virus in spreading. The virus just so happens to spawn near CNY is another factor as well. All this combined made the virus explode. Best quarantine chance is gone, massive flow of people, politicians being useless... or just China being typically China. One might be willing to argue that have the KMT won the civil war, this wouldn't happen. Not absolutely sure since it could go both ways. Taiwanese get visits from the police/government agents for saying naughty shit as well, it's fucking dumb no matter who does it, and it seems the chinks, along with eurofags and Bongistanis are the best at such exceptional practices.

$10 a night, that's gross. I'd rather sleep in a fucking mall or bus stop.
The capitalism in me says it's just supply and demand, but fucking hell, the place is infested with all kinds of vermin. It's fine with me if they actually cleaned the place, if there's fucking standards. $10 big deal, good for a backpacker on a budget. But no, it's basically a gas chamber with a ticking time bomb inside. I won't mind living in such a cubical for a couple nights when I travel if it's clean. I'd rather sleep in a construction pipe.
"Near Chinatown", is the owner some slant merchant? I'm going to bet he has Brock eyes.
Nah nuking and firebombing Japan was kind of needed. They wouldn't have surrendered otherwise. Like it took 2 nukes to end things with Japan. 2. You'd think having one city bombed to he'll would make it stop. Compared to the atrocities they comitted to innocent people of varying ethnicity for their experiments even then nuking them twice is considered merciful.

How does one test for Corona anyway?
It’s an RT-PCR test. You take a sample (probably from airways) and isolate RNA, then reverse transcribe the RNA to DNA and then amplify it up using sequence specific primers. If the corona sequences are in there they will amplify and you can use a probe tagged with various things like fluorescence. Any lab with a PCR machine should be able to do it off supplied with primers and probe.
There’s probably a protocol online, let me see if I can find it...

edited to add: yeah, here.https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/lab/rt-pcr-detection-instructions.html

It’s not hard to do - anyone working in a molecular biology lab will have the tools and ability to do this.

it’s possible it ‘hangs’ in still air yes, most airborne and droplet transmissions do for a short while indoors. Cruise ships are notorious for this sort of thing. Every year a few get hit by norovirus and it rips through the whole ship. Close quarters and poor ventilation of inner cabins plus cleaners using the same cloths on multiple cabins, central food prep, etc. Floating petri dish...
Edited again: it’s a real time PCR so you shove the fluorescent probe in with the reaction and it reads out in real time - you get an amplification curve. This machine is slightly more pricey than your basic lab PCR machine, but not horrifically so. you can still do it in a regular machine with a bit of tinkering, you’d just not get the instant read out.

I remember back in the day they had outbreaks on cruise ships that lasted 2 or 3 trips before they realized they had to strip the ship and decontaminate them from top to bottom.
I don't know how you accomplish that sort of thing in any high density urban environment much less one with sanitary protocols like 'make sure to spit a lot to stay healthy'.

Pretty interesting pics. One that I liked:

Ah, anecdote time!

Knew people who worked as chambermaids in nice enough hotels back in the day. They're under severe time pressures to get x-number of rooms cleaned within the timeframe between check out and new guests checking in. How they manage it is by cleaning at speeds and using get-it-done tricks that mean hygiene is not always the priority.

Example: Cleaner scrubs toilet with normal toiletcleanser and brush etc. Then they wipe the toilet down '.. with the towels the guests have discarded. Then they take that same towel and wipe the sink dry.

There was also an anecdote by a friend who was being taught the routine in one nice country hotel where they wiped out the fucking tooth mugs with the dirty towel that had been around the toilet and the sink. I have never drunk out of a hotel glass in room to this day after hearing that one.

Maybe conditions and practices have improved since this time (this was 30 years ago). But given low pay, understaffing and general who-gives-a-fuck attitudes prevelent in such jobs where they're treated like shit ... don't depend on it.

Cruise ships? With people on low pay, working 14 hour shifts or more, seven days a week? Don't think shortcuts aren't taken just to meet quota whatever the higher-ups who've never done the job tell you.

Standard hotel cup.
Truely the timeline of nightmares for miss "no fossile fuels" Greta Thunberg, how dare you wrap a plastic cup in several layers of latex to survive a deadly virus, How dare medics use several layers of latex gloves to cure patients when they all could just accept their sacrifice for the greater good of the doom prophets of climate change ! You are all a bunch of deplorables ! /sarcasm.

Why can't she travel to China and lecture the president there for being responsible of 90% of smog emissions and plastic production in the whole world tho ? It's clearly easy and not subversive to just pick on country leaders that already approve of your fanatism / cult...

Anyone for a "change" petition to get Greta Thunberg to meet Xi ? :story:

I'd pay to see her trying to pull that shit over there.

So Cambodia welcomed that cruise ship full of potentially wu flu exposed people with handshakes and crowds of well wishers and shit, now someone's tested positive.
No good deed goes unpunished. Cambodia's a pretty poor country that relies on aid to fund their healthcare iirc. Not to mention the thousands of people it could've spread to/from that are now in airports across the planet. Whoops.
Thank you Dr Purr very cool.
This is the most miserable thing. There's no reason that ship couldn't have turned around and gone back wherever it came from. They had offers of fuel and supplies, they decided they had to do something to impress the wealthy dipshit passengers who insisted on taking an Asian cruise in the middle of a plague. The whole the third world shouldn't be exposed to deadly disease just so some rich assholes can attempt a vacation.

Yeah, forced vivisection of POWs is a totally normal occurrence and was totally never frowned upon ever in human history.

Jeez, dude, cutting open people while they're awake is totally common in our history. Why do you have your panties all in a twist?

That's basically breaking by horse but with a blade instead tbh. Now don't get me wrong I am horrified that the japanese were still doing it in the 20th fucking century. But to be fair similar execution techniques were far from uncommon during the middle ages.

Also here's a fun fact. Execution by horse isn't how the historical William Wallace died... because he survived. First they used thst, then when that didn't work they dismembered, eviscerated and finally decapitated the fucker, and then they sent a buncha his bodyparts to be stabbed on pikes all over scottish castles just to rub it in.

With how hilariously evil the british are portrayed as in Braveheart I'm surprised they didn't use that one. But I guess they needed to get him screaming "freeedooooom!!!" As he died instead of incoherent blood-gargling screams of agony. You know, gotta leave a poetic image.

Drawing and quartering wasn't common. It was an English capital punishment used for High Treason. Beheading and hanging were still the overwhelming majority of capital punishments. We even have a full list of those who were sentenced.

Unit 731 killed thousands by experimentation and live vivisection. I'd say they win.

Edit: messed up my links because I'm a moron.

Yep. Thanks for posting that. It's really cringe to see people equating vanishingly rare European punishments with the brutality of other peoples.

"Things like that were common throughout history."
You see the key words "like that"?
Or are you conflating "common throughout history" and "happens on a daily basis'?

  • Mad at the Internet
Reactions: Consenticles
Are the symptoms finalized? Most of the symptoms we know are information from China, and it's common sense to not to not trust China. Here is what I remember so far:
  • Coughing
  • Coughing/vomiting blood, even moreso than pneumonia(?)
  • Feeling of (heavy) fluid in lungs
  • Itchiness(?)
  • Shortness of breath(?)
Takes 1 or 2 weeks to develop (I'm not sure which one is correct, or the virus does indeed flip flop between them)
  • Sudden fatigue/fainting(?)
There's a bunch more that escaped my mind, but I'm not sure if some of them are the real symptoms or made up.

EDIT: I looked in the last pages and how did it reach Egypt of all places?

If you listen to lefties they claim the only reason the bombs were dropped was to intimidate Russia.
