Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I'm also under suspicion that a lot of people are using the climate to use POs for their labs and unis and then just flipping them on amazon or ebay for exorbitant prices, which is just exacerbating the situation. I'm kind of lucky in that I've got a shitty respirator that kind of fits and like 3 boxes of surgical masks left over. I can't even imagine what its like in India and other countries where supplies are tight. I'm also lucky that my research protocols aren't yet optimized so I can afford to wait a little bit. But once they are actually optimized, I have to get on trucking and I need PPE. I'm just going to devote my budget for the next two weeks for PPE so I can at least reserve some stuff before everything disappears again. The glove situation is also worrying, I haven't yet checked my nitrile supply. I might just have to stock up there too.

And 3M is the best. I considered using Honeywell, but even they're out of everything.
I suspect this too. On Flipkart(India's Ebay) 3M masks are marked up 400% the usual price. Govt hasnt done anything to stop this and I'm afraid the situation might get out of hand.

With any luck the PM will go to meet Xi again and he'll catch it.

So I just got off the phone with my suppliers for my research. I work with clinical stuff and human fluid that can become aersolized and my work involves vulnerable populations. All masks, respirators and cartridges are on back-order until mid fucking march. And this is a supplier which you can't buy from unless you're: a big university or a research lab. 3M is having a massively hard time keeping up with demand even in professional industries that need this shit. Get this: Even fucking basic protective lab goggles aren't available until the first week of march. Which means I'm going to have a hard time keeping my people in the field doing sample collection protected. I hope our paperwork gets delayed so I can give them the proper PPE.

Whatever the case, NCovid is scaring the ever living shit out of everyone in the US.

I work in hardware transport and sale, and the fucking chemical respirators (the ones that protect against corrosive/toxic environments and fumes, not organic compounds) have been sold out since like a week into this. Those won't even protect anyone, but people are going to be stupid apparently.

Check your local auto parts stores if you can't find them. They're already way over-priced, but they're going to be the last place people think to buy out of stock.

Even most of those seem to be out, though that's a good one, especially the smaller shops. I've got a stock for housework, so I'm good.

Seriously, everyone, consider what is now cheap shit that might go out during a crisis and get not a massive lolprepper stockpile but simple shit. In six months when this is (likely) blown over you can get a couple packs of N95s or whatever (the comfy 3M ones with the valve? Noice.). Keep them in reserve. But think other things too.

People I know in California every year go 'yeah but why do I need a room HEPA filter, I don't got allergies' then come fire season they choke. They're cheap, get one even if just for one little room you can make a breathing zone in case you get wildfire smoke or something. Leave it in the box, no biggie. They don't go bad.

Have a fire extinguisher. Little jug of plain Clorox, and know how to use it to make sure water's safe if shit goes upside down (for fuck's sake research this first don't literally drink bleach). Lighters. I like the butane torches (or even fucking Bics) for use to light gas stuff if the power goes out, they don't evaporate fluid.Flashlights and a bit of first aid to your ability.

None of this is rocket science, just think 'what's gonna fly off the shelves if x, y or z happen' and get a little stock of non-perishables that will go.

Anything that will neutralize chemicals will probably trap nasal particles, it just becomes a one time use mask.

The WHO focusing on muh racism instead of ending this pandemic is one of the most shameful and cowardly acts we’ve seen in this whole debacle. Incapable of actually doing anything other than kissing ass and hectoring people for racism, WHO has no real reason to exist in 2020.

Hopefully even more of their budget gets cut and redirected to programs that actually do something besides function as Beijing's soft power projector.

A very famous Chinese news website has been summoned to a meeting with the "Beijing City Internet Information Office". The Office demanded that this website shut down updates because it was publishing "immoral" and "obscene" content.

It is telling to note that while the best apology is changed behavior, the Chinese government has never formally done the former for Dr. Li, only changing its tune and throwing the local government under the bus, it has now shown the world how much of the latter it has done.

It really depends. Some are not rated and most people don't understand.

It depends on what they're rated for. I'm getting the P100 filters, which are basically the best you can get for respirators.

3M were having supply issues going back so far as the 23rd of January. 3M masks are made in the US and shouldn't be affected by any plant closures in China.

Someone is buying a shitload of masks.
I wonder if the Chinese govt. put in a rush order during late January to get ahead of disclosure. That's before the official announcement of the disease but we know they knew about it since early January and were imprisoning people who tried to blow the whistle.

More likely Chinese scalpers seeing an opportunity to try and buy up a bunch of masks to upsell locally to Chinese people during a period of crisis. If there's one thing Chinese people are good at, its trying to make a quick buck.

This is when government should get involved and limit the purchase by individuals (a thirty day supply) as well a strictly control foreign export of medically necessary protective equipment. I'm sure the clowns on Twitter would scream racism if China didn't get the lion's share even if people in downtown LA were literally dropping dead in the streets from bat flu.

Tbf, most of the masks are probably made in China.
This whole crisis just shows how globalism completely fucked over supply lines by having them all relying on the same country rather than have any redundancy. I'd rather have some protectionism that will at least make sure my country isn't fucked over if someone in China sneezes.

The Chinese government is screaming WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYCIS already.
