Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Tbf, most of the masks are probably made in China.
This whole crisis just shows how globalism completely fucked over supply lines by having them all relying on the same country rather than have any redundancy. I'd rather have some protectionism that will at least make sure my country isn't fucked over if someone in China sneezes.
It was mentioned above but 3M makes their products in the US and they're the industry standard. Chinese are buying them out in Western countries and scalping them. It's a problem of dual loyalties in immigrants rather than companies outsourcing their production lines.

If I was gonna make a bioweapon to target China, it would be
  • More likely to target China than other countries based on some form of biological signifier
  • Debilitating but not an outright massacre
  • Permanently disables and weakens the populace
  • Permanently damage their fertility
Having a big think here, guys.

WHO has no real reason to exist in 2020.

what really floors me is how obvious they are about it, they aren't even trying to hide that they are bought and owned by china. at least pretend to be neutral instead of constantly promoting and complementing china over literally anything.

The WHO is a UN organisation and the UN has been a pure globalist, more or less communist institution from the beginning. There should be no surprise they are shilling for China, an integral part of the globalist system in its current form. Never expect anything positive to come from any UN institution, ever - but do expect to be called racist by them as they ask you for gibs.

I'm mostly thinking about how all the normies are buying up these lab-grade masks for no fucking reason. Meanwhile the people who need them are not getting them.

The most idiotic thing is half mask respirators. I use them when I'm processing clinical samples like blood or urine because I'm paranoid and its just easier than switching surgical masks 45 times. They are not made for 8 hour+ use, uncomfortable and can be hard to breathe in. since I work with vulnerable and samples taken from people with weak immune systems, I really don't want to risk it. But normies buying all these fucking masks like its goddamn doomsday is killing me.

The only good thing about this is I don't currently have any samples, my protocol isn't perfected yet so I don't want to gather samples, and our paperwork is behind. It is buying me time to get my PPE. But still, if I was in the middle of my study I'd be stuck with shitty CVS masks we had leftover.

3M were having supply issues going back so far as the 23rd of January. 3M masks are made in the US and shouldn't be affected by any plant closures in China.

Someone is buying a shitload of masks.

Not shocking. The company I order from is a partner with 3M and scientists are getting kind of pissed all their PPE is getting bought up by the fucking normies.

This is when government should get involved and limit the purchase by individuals (a thirty day supply) as well a strictly control foreign export of medically necessary protective equipment. I'm sure the clowns on Twitter would scream racism if China didn't get the lion's share even if people in downtown LA were literally dropping dead in the streets from bat flu.

The government, ebay and amazon need to crack down on this shit. People are selling 10 packs of N95s for like 65 bucks. Its fucking crazy. I saw one guy making 295 dollars shipping.

760 million people in quarantine now

Just a flu guys
Lol that's the majority of China, and more that twice the US population.

Go the Star Gate SG1 rout.

Concoct something mentally and physically debilitating (Think Polio) and far reaching and offer a vaccine which slowly renders them infertile over a decade or two that they will gladly pay for.

But if COVID-19 is a escaped Chinese bio weapon, pray the idiots never manage to steal a Variola (Small pox) sample from the U.S or Russia.

I worry that China's going to give up trying to contain this. Once they do, they're going to do their best to conceal it, and try and convince/bribe/threaten the rest of the world into opening borders and letting the Plague Ridden people and products of China out into the greater world again.

The Warhammer 40k bootleg Chinese resellers on ebay now have a new message on their auctions and websites:

Since 2020.2.15, we have officially started processing orders and shipping. As it has just resumed, some products take time to produce. I hope everyone understands that if you have any questions, you can keep communicating.
Our goods are shipped from Beijing and Shanghai, safely and quickly.
Because the post office and customs will carry out security inspection and sterilization of parcels, the transportation time may be delayed, but it is not easy to ship at this time. We will carefully and carefully process each parcel as soon as possible. Please do not urge.
Sincere thanks again to friends from various countries who have cared about us recently, and we are very heartwarming!
I wish everyone good health!

So yeah, free WuFlu with every purchase of 70% discounted Warhammer 40k figurines. I kinda worry that sites like Wish / Aliexpress / eBay / Amazon are going to be a transmission vector we're not expecting.

Since mask makers are facing demand issues, is there a way to cobble together makeshift masks in the meantime? I mean, obviously it's best to just avoid going out altogether, but in case one really has to, is there anything that could at least work in a pinch (in addition to keeping a wide berth from people in general)? Cloth masks with a couple layers of tissue inside maybe? Where I am, we're still keeping corona-chan in check (Dr. Purr, you're very cool!), so I'd rather just use makeshift masks for now instead of placing an even greater stress on manufacturers when frontline medics need it more.

Lol that's the majority of China, and more that twice the US population.
The only good takeaway from this pandemic is that it might finally eviscerate the CCP once and for all. If that happens, it'll be a grievous wound to Communism as a whole. I would say that it would demoralize communists all over but they're supremely delusional about their economic philosophies and would probably deny that the CCP was ever communist to begin with.

They ALREADY ARE in Twitter. At least, the ones who are willing to admit CCP has committed atrocities.

"CCP isn't any more communist than America! It's a late stage Capitalist country! Real Communism hasn't be tried before!"

I don't know much about the construction of rebreathers or filters but I do know that anything that's activated carbon (charcoal-colored black foam) is better than nothing. It's the shit they use to catch micro-debris in faucet filters. It's even used as packaging material from time to time too.

This only covers last weekend (sorry, still over 50 pages behind 😅). I wanted to get these done though and posted in case anyone was wondering where I was/if I'd finally been WuFlu'd, and also so I could test whether my script was working. Looks good so far: I should hopefully be able to catch up quicker and stay current a little easier with this now. (Hopefully!)

EDIT: Doesn't look like it's @'ing anyone properly, that's annoying. Test: @Yotsubaaa
(I think it needs a space after the username for KF's proxy to do it automatically?)

EDIT2: And before the username, apparently. Working now!

Did somebody figure out this as a better way? Cos last week it was all "there's not enough test kits" and on the news they were saying there was only one lab in the entire Western Hemisphere (in Georgia) that could process tests...
Technically any lab with an RT PCR machine can do it.
In reality, to do it safely you’d need a decent level of biosafety(class 2 according to the protocol, so a decent isolation ventilation cabinet, specific protocols, v good PPE, all waste destroyed by autoclave, lockable doors etc) because the samples could infect you. Those labs are pretty common though, it’s not insane level stuff.
The test kits will take time to produce as well. The primers and the probe are specialist products that need specialist manufacturing - you’re literally creating a short DNA sequence by sticking bases together. The polymerase costs a fortune, and is also a specialist product.
Someone will be working on a faster point of care test. It won’t be feasible to diagnose hundreds of thousands of people with RTPCR.

3M were having supply issues going back so far as the 23rd of January. 3M masks are made in the US and shouldn't be affected by any plant closures in China.

Someone is buying a shitload of masks.

My employer bought 5,000 of them a couple weeks ago for our business continuity plan and they’re the ones recommended in this thread too, not just the standard masks. They have another 5,000 on the way supposedly. It’s not just normies and chinks looking to make a quick buck, I wouldn’t be surprised that any customer-facing business is attempting to buy them.

I worry that China's going to give up trying to contain this. Once they do, they're going to do their best to conceal it, and try and convince/bribe/threaten the rest of the world into opening borders and letting the Plague Ridden people and products of China out into the greater world again.

I would say they’re at that point anyway. How enforceable is a quarantine for 760 million people anyway? At this point, the most they can do is set up checkpoints and hope people snitch on others for violating the quarantine. The Chinese government has lost all control of the coronavirus at this point. They never had control, sure, but expanding the quarantine to more than half the population is an admission of defeat.

The hotel looks funny, I don't hate it, however the comparison doesn't apply.

Sorry about the late reply - I had somehow missed your response. Of course, I completely disagree with your analysis here.

Firstly, I think the Soviet hotel comparison absolutely stands because it explains effectively why authoritarian totalitarian regimes inevitably do very dumb things from time to time. It doesn't mean you need to have a Stalin or a Mao and it has nothing to do with the Western media being fake news which is low hanging fruit that you're grabbing at which has nothing at all to do with anything I said.

"Let's build bio lab"
"Where"
"In the middle of Wuhan"
"Sure"
*Everyone else silent because they fear getting killed*
(This never happened)
Mao is long dead, China is long gone from being a Maoist mess with "anti-revolutionary" laws. It's not 1951, it's 2020.

Yeah, this is a reductio ad absurdum argument and these always look insincere to me. I'm not saying they didn't have the nerve to correct a senior commie because they feared they would be summarily executed. But anyone who has worked a real job knows that correcting your boss is a delicate matter, and the more important the topic (and the dumber the boss' opinion), the more delicate it is. The Chinese system has always to large degree valued loyalty ahead of competence, going right back to Mao's "Red Expert" euphemism and it seems that Xi has re-enforced this during his tenure after his perception that things were getting too loose under Hu. And so while today these bureaucrats and scientists may not fear summary execution as much (although some do fear it a little and China has a rather startlingly high rate of executives who jump out of windows) they certainly do fear potential career (and freedom) consequences for embarrassing a senior commie official, not exactly known for not being ruthless, vindictive bastards. If you're a Chinese scientist who has been told to do something stupid by a commie official who likes to tell everyone he's trained as an engineer but actually is pretty ignorant on the topic being discussed, it's a hell of a lot easier to do what you're told and hope for the best than take the career-political risk of trying to correct the decision. And that thinking still definitely applies in the modern PRC, especially around politically sensitive topics.

And hey, at least this way you get to live in a city with stuff going on and can go home to your family on week nights, instead of having a long drive back and forth to the middle of nowhere every weekend.

However, there is indeed a virology research lab in Wuhan. It's a bio-safety level 4 lab that's opened in coordination with the French. Many simply ignore this.
If the virus did come from the lab, where's the French at? Where are French scientists speaking up? This theory has as much validity as the USA launched a bioweapon theory, which some Chinese believe. There is no way a virus will just simply escape from a bio-safety level 4 lab, unless one is willing to entertain the idea of either French or Chinese researchers intentionally infecting people.

I also disagree with this take. Firstly, you aren't clear about how much French supervision there is. Did they just get paid nicely to say "this conforms to Western safety standards" then hop back on a plane, coming back once or twice a year for a conference while letting the Chinese get on with it? And then you presumably understand the Chinese enough to know that even if the French have in theory an active research presence on site (which you are not specific about), then the Chinese will still have loads of angles and scams going on that their French "colleagues and partners" are to be kept in the dark about (with varying degrees of success). Everyone who has worked with the Chinese, especially in Chinese companies, has seen this shit going on. And the French can't prevent the Chinese from Chinese lax attitude to safety, penchant for fuck-ups and reckless ambition to copy/steal Western science and technology, irrespective of whether or not they're prepared to handle it safely.

Discussions of US related bioweapons is censored as well. It will make more sense to use this as an obfuscation.

No, sorry, that's just obviously wrong. For the Chinese state, which is known to be censorious as fuck, tolerating a conspiracy theory is basically the same thing as endorsing it and if the Chinese state were to embrace that conspiracy theory and allow the Chinese Internet to discuss it, then it's obviously an act of war that will demand severe retribution. And a billion Changs who have been misled to the point of genuinely believing that the PRC could maybe go up against the US in a war where bioweapons are being used and therefore there are no rules - and not be obliterated in a few hours - would probably get a lot harder to manage. And this is to say nothing of the fact that if you allow people to speculate it's a bioweapon (i.e. acknowledge the possibility of it) then that is a hell of a lot worse than the flu, people will get more difficult to manage for this reason too and also you also open the door to the implication that maybe it is a bioweapon but it wasn't the Americans who released it.

The lab wasn't even able to test the virus, you honestly think it can produce fucking bioweapons?

Yeah, says the Chinese Communists. But they are not a reliable source, are they?

I can't prove it is a bioweapon, just like you can't prove it is bat soup and disgustingly unhygienic wet markets, but some signs point to it being a bioweapon and you're not doing anything to convince me otherwise.
