Coronavirus: Fear of Asians rooted in long American history of prejudicial policies
was written 2.12 but the page wasn't archived so maybe it's not posted here yet.

If the title and the source didn't give it away, some of the main topics of the article are activism, diversity, race and ethnicity.

The horror
"From denigrating social media memes and GIFs to incidents of outright prejudice around the world, many Chinese people, and people of Asian descent perceived to be Chinese, are being avoided and blamed for spreading the pneumonia-causing virus, which originated in Wuhan, China."

According to John A. Powell
"...thinking about the infected and how we can help as a global society is important. He said changing the way we describe people from other cultures and countries is a step in the right direction."
“Sometimes they’re Muslim, sometimes they’re black, sometimes they’re Mexican, sometimes they’re Asian,” powell said. “But there is no them. There’s only us, and we have to figure out how to go forward where everybody belongs and nobody dominates. Not blacks, not whites, not Christians, not Muslims. No group dominates.”

Kumbaya bigots.
Maybe the real answer is there actually is a problem with all those people.

Because 'Mexican ' is apparently a race or ethnicity rather than a nationality that is per capital mostly 'Christian.'

And I don't think there have been any documented cases in Mexico as of yet. Though I could be wrong.

Why? How is he wrong?

he's not "wrong" per se. He's reading and interpreting the news in a very hyperbolic way.

Just because something CAN BE a catastrophe doesn't mean it WILL BE one.

We aren't and shouldn't deny that this new CoV strain is dangerous and our body isn't properly trained to react to it like a common flu (hence, why saying "it's not just the flu" is correct), but the conditions in China and the rest of the world aren't the same for our populations. The virus has already left China and it's wild in the world, and we haven't gotten that terrible reaction to it like China did. Why? many factors such as better hygiene and more information. I know I'm washing my hands more often than I used to few months ago, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

One thing you learn when you work on things that involve public and a big number of the population is that you need to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. We have to prepare for, say, an earthquake that is 10M all the time so when a lower scaled one happens, we'll be fine. Most people working for public organizations know this. But that doesn't mean this worst-case scenario will actually happen. The idea that the virus will infect 60% of the population is likely, but not settled on stone, nor it will mean all those people will need to be taken to the hospital. there could be cases of people who actually got the actual CoV and are recovering because their bodies are reacting better. It's not likely, but not entirely impossible. Prepare as though the end of days are coming, but don't assume they will.

Chinese were treated like shit when they first came here and they still managed to attain success. I think they've proven themselves.
Those chinks that came before the commies and the ones fleeing the commies? They're ours, they're Americans. Our Chinese gave us chop suey and spring rolls. They don't eat bats. The recent CCP shills can GTFO though.

Chinese were treated like shit when they first came here and they still managed to attain success. I think they've proven themselves.

And many other East Asians, also Indians, Jews, Arabs, some Europeans like Italians, Irish, etc.

Every group that is new in a population has always been received with mistrust until they proven themselves to be a productive part of their society. I'm not counting invasions, of course, because that's a different discussion tht we better not got into now.

Most Chinese people are hard working people. This city has Chinese people everywhere, with children who were born here. Fuck, there are a lot of them here in my neighborhood and they have never been in China ever (or were too young when they came here to even remember). Of course, there will always be stupid assholes seeing someone who is Chinese who's never even left the country and say "ah, ah, the plague, kill them!", but it's always a very small group you can count with one hand.

We have to remember that the Coronavirus isn't a free pass to suddenly be an asshole. Don't start treating all Asians like shit just because of this whole debacle. Not only is that completely dickish, you're giving bullshit entities like the WHO more ammo. Not that I think the WHO actually cares about racism more than they do with money the CCP lines their pockets with, but still.

Now if they're spouting CCP propaganda, or practicing unhygienic, and/or unethical behaviors, or are exhibiting symptoms that's one thing, but if they're just minding their own business, leave them alone. Don't bother them, don't harass them, don't try to start anything, just leave them alone. Doing otherwise is just going to make everything worse.

I have the utmost respect for anyone who is willing to navigate the legal immigration process to come to the U.S of A and have yet to meet anyone in person who will say such things openly where they can be openly judged.

Alternate theory: WuFlu is going to kill u.

I'm in the states and my previously healthy professor (as far as I know) announced via email today that she has gotten sick and will be in the hospital for a few days, and the class has been taken over by a grad student who today made it sound like it could be a lot longer, on the scale of weeks.

This lady could give Vic Mignoga a run for his money when it comes to hugging everyone, and attends conferences with various academics and researchers around the world and very likely hugs all of them. I think it's very likely to be literally anything else though, but people in this class are still giving each other concerned side glances that is more than the typical "I hope she is ok" or "I wonder if we get a day off out of this?", but more of a personal nervousness.
No one is coughing or anything though as far as I can tell.

I keep wondering too hard who the first kiwi to get N-COVID will be if any, and I don't want the dramatic irony of that to make it myself, lol

Jim is mainly focused on how bad it is in China, which is where it's catastrophically bad. The cruise ships are also showing us how fast it spreads in "ideal" conditions.

Will it be so bad here? There is a strong argument it won't be. The air pollution in China for starters is so bad that everyone's lungs start out fucked up.

If it could really last week's and weeks on hard surfaces that are not climate controlled the shipment of Chinese goods would have gotten us already. Our hospitals are not total shit. The Army already has 1000 emergency beds ready.

Still if this thing goes buck wild and infects 60% of the US population and kills around 2% of those infected that's 824,400 people dead because we just need that 20% off shitty consumer goods. That's nuts and most likely worse case scenario.

A more probable scenario is that this only seriously impacts China because it's a shit hole. It's already wrecking havoc on their economy. It's been speculated, and I'm too lazy to find links for you, that is China's economy stops growing for a relatively short period of time there will be a civil war/major unrest because a vast amount of people are not participating in the new economy.

Xi is already implementing Mao style social controls. Mao killed more people by far than Hitler or Stalin,

If Germany suddenly implemented "Hitler" style controls after erecting 1000s of his statues, it'd be a happening without question. Same if Russia did the same with Stalin. We're watching live as China does the same as they lose their poultry and pigs to epidemics and people are so sick they're keeling over in the streets.

Even if this thing never leaves China or has a significantly reduced kill rate here and deaths are under the half a million mark what do you think stage 2 in China is going to look like? They are already locking people into death camps with no food, water, or bathrooms. What do you think it really would look like without the massive censorship currently taking place?

It's the apocalypse over there.

Good news everybody! Comrade Xi is on top of this shit!

BEIJING, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- An article by President Xi Jinping on the prevention and control of the pneumonia epidemic caused by the novel coronavirus will be published Sunday on Qiushi Journal, a flagship magazine of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.

The article is the transcript of a speech by Xi, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

The article stresses the importance of securing success in the prevention and control work, pointing out that the outcome of the epidemic prevention and control directly affects people's lives and health, the overall economic and social stability and the country's opening-up.

Resources for treatment, prevention and protection must be sent to the front line of the battle against the epidemic and priority should be given to meet the needs of frontline medical staff and patients, according to the article.

All-out efforts should be made to improve the admission and survival rates, and reduce the infection and mortality rates, the article says.
The article underlines the need to safeguard social stability, the promotion of public education and communication, as well as ensuring a stable economic performance.

It also stresses improving the country's emergency management system and capacity of handling urgent, difficult, dangerous and important tasks.

Oh my god that is an autism gold mine.

"The article stresses the importance of securing success in the prevention and control work, pointing out that the outcome of the epidemic prevention and control directly affects people's lives and health, the overall economic and social stability and the country's opening-up."

Translation from filibustering to english: the key to reducing a viral infection's damage is making sure people don't get sick.

"All-out efforts should be made to improve the admission and survival rates, and reduce the infection and mortality rates, the article says."

Again, translation to english: to make sure we beat this epidemic we should put efforts into getting less people to get infected and more people to survive infections.

"The article underlines the need to safeguard social stability, the promotion of public education and communication, as well as ensuring a stable economic performance."

We've literally been saying that from day 1. Difference is we also mentioned HOW. I swear to god. It's no wonder they're doing this shit it took them THIS FUCKING LONG to learn this shit? This isn't even the basics, it's the god damned chapter title. Yes Xi. To beat an epidemic you have to minimize infections, maximize survival and ensure the normal functioning of the basic needs (and hopefuly as many non essential parts of society as possible) and to do that people need to be informed and the infrastructure needs to be prepared. Welm done buddy you're getting there a few more months and you might get a gold fucking star. Dear god I thought he was an asshole but now I have to re-think maybe he's just so completely and utterly retarded he might not even comprehend why the west dislikes him. Are we sure his brain isn't made up of the crayola he's been inserting up his nose?

Literally none of that should have to be said. Also my translation was funnier.

I doubt we will ever know just how much of a clusterfuck is happening right now.

This.

America is actually very welcoming of immigrants, overall. All that's ever been asked of ANY immigrant to the USA is to come legally and do their best to assimilate into the USA. Doesn't mean you cast aside the old country and your heritage, but you're here in America now, so act like it, at least in public. Speak English, etc., in public. Don't expect America to change for you. You must adapt to America. No can do? The door opens out as easily as it opened in.

We have a mix of people here. Haven't heard of any Asian being hassled about being Chinese.

Diane Abbot, is that you? I make it more like 4 million.

The big thing is that we really don't know what those percentages will be in otherwise healthy western populations. The cruise ship experiment seems to hint that the 60% may be a reasonable estimate. Check back next month for what it tells us about the fatality rate I guess.

Personally, I'm not too worried about the direct death rate, but the potential second order disruption is concerning. Every single thing we need to exist is dependent on massively long supply chains. All arriving just in time, and all with a chinese component in there somewhere.
(some exaggeration here, but not much) . Even locally produced food needs fuel, fertiliser , tractor parts etc)

Five gets you ten Xi didn't even write the thing. Just wants to give the impression he gives a fuck about his peons, when the world knows he doesn't.

Emperor Xi, the man with no clothes, master of the obvious, dufus with buttons. Can he make himself look any more like a fool? I'm afraid to watch.
