I dont think we are in the clear yet. People have been actively looking for cases and effectively breaking transmission chains in most other countries. In China it had a head start and has been helped along by stupid choices like shoving possibly infected people together at high density, but it only takes a few missed cases to entrench something.
Seasonal flu usually manages to hit the whole planet, we are incredibly interconnected and were even in 1918 with the flu then.
I still think the west should be testing sentinel samples, not just people with a connection to China. It would be mind blowing if this disease was running alongside the Usual seasonal illnesses and we just hadn’t noticed.
The thought of this being such a specific illness, with infectivity and severity being so much higher in a specific ethnic group ( if proven true) is sobering. You can bet your bottom dollar that research programs are being thought about, just in silico at first honest guv, to explore the potential of that.
We've known about the racial sensitivity to ACE 2 pathway viruses since SARS. People only suggested this was a bioweapon because we've had a decade of advanced knowledge of just how specific these infection pathways can be.

Anyone know what the average age of the confirmed 1.8k deaths is? If it's 60+ then the virus is just a nothingburger. In fact getting rid of unproductive members of society could be a good thing. Imagine how much resources Japan needs to pump into those 110 year olds (who are in the millions) just so they can stare at the wall for another additional day.

Driver in Japan diagnosed with virus. Among his passengers, is an apparently high profile journalist that handle's Abe's (president of nip) stuff. He's been in close proximity to Abe and other high level politicians... oof

"According to the standards of China, Abe needs to be quarantined" says one commenter.
Is Abe going to get the flu?

So since the virus is at a downward trend in chinkland, is there a need to have another, focused on "not China"? Japan might be the next hotspot. Eh maybe not.

Nips are being bashed left right and centre for "mishandling" the boat ship whatever thing, I don't know the exact back story and can't be fucked to find out.

Does embarrassing corporate activism count as news? Razer's shilling Wu Flu posters.

"Our friends and gamers in Wuhan have been stuck in lockdown since the outbreak and we’re doing our part to raise awareness for the Coronavirus situation. Support our charity drive to help fund efforts in Wuhan—proceeds from the sale of our limited-run ‘Game On’ poster will go to a select foundation combating the virus. Wuhan Jiayou."

Six people are being tested in Sweden now because they've recently been in China and "there might have been a certain gathering last weekend" (No idea what this refers to, they're being vague on purpose most likely).

They are downplaying this quite a bit. All six are showing clear signs of respiratory infection and it's therefore very possible that they have raw dogged Corona-sama. Despite that, Swedish media is now going "Not a big deal, no reason to worry", this despite the fact that they said three suspected cases existed, just to change that to six a few hours later.

FYI, Sweden has absolutely no healthcare to combat a full pandemic. There are less than three hundred ICU spots in Sweden (270 or so if I remember correctly) and we barely have antibiotics any longer due to issues with both suppliers and finances, at least not to combat a full-blown pandemic. Basically, if shit hits the fan, all of southern Sweden is going down.

I still think it's pretty weird that a virus that's so infectious hasn't caused a single wave of infections in any western country after all this time. Don't kid yourself that shutting down some flights effectively stopped it in it's tracks, either.
problem is that if you have a mild case then it would just seem like a normal cold and you wouldn't really think about it. "this super disease that is completely destroying China, there's no way my little cough could be that"

China's military force had caught a big flu, thanks to Corona-chan and a little help of Xi's bungling.

How Xi’s bungling has devastated China’s military capabilities
By David Archibald
There is a lot written about China these days and most of it is correct in describing that country as nasty, aggressive and a threat to civilization. President Xi wants to be emperor of the whole world and could see a path to achieving that. But he has kicked a couple of own goals that will help preclude that from happening.
Xi’s first own goal was to suppress privately owned business activity in favour of state-owned companies. Workers in state-owned companies have about a third of the productivity of those in businesses run by their private owners. Beyond that, his directive suppresses the animal spirits of the private sector. As to why Xi did that, private businesses are separate sources of power and thus potential threats to communist control. Communist leaders will choose security for themselves over prosperity for others every time.

His second own goal was to delay the news of the coronavirus until after the trade deal was signed with the United States. Xi did not want to show any sign of weakness while the deal was being negotiated. China’s relative position had been deteriorating since 2015 when its share of world exports peaked at about 15%. Trump wanted a trade deal because he would like China to remain stable through the election cycle. The language of the trade deal included a lot of “China shall” indicating that China needed the deal more than Trump did. We infer that the anti-China efforts will be ramped up again after the election.

The first coronavirus case was reported on December 1, 2019 and the trade deal was signed on January 15, 2020. Wuhan was put under quarantine lockdown eight days later on January 23. In the meantime some five million people left Wuhan, as estimated by Wuhan’s mayor, a case of closing the stable door after the horse had bolted. So, as a result of waiting for the trade deal to be signed before acting, Xi changed a controllable outbreak into an out-of-control epidemic.

The Chicoms are pathological liars as they regard anyone who is not in a more powerful position in the Chinese Communist Party with contempt, and thus they reported daily deaths as a percentage of cases as 2.1%, 2.1%. 2.1% until they gave up lying about it. But the hit to China’s economy is real and huge. Coal consumption is half what it should be at this point after the end of the lunar new year holidays. A ir pollution, as measured by satellites, is down 20% to 50%.

China’s ability to threaten its neighbours will be much weakened as its government revenues crater. There is a good case for nominating the corona virus for the Nobel Peace Prize. The humble virus has certainly done far more for world peace than Greta Thunberg, the current front runner.

Between this and the woman in Jönköping (who's condition we still haven't been updated on for weeks) I guess it's time to completely lose my shit and panic.

Sadly Sweden’s top priority will be to avoid hurt feelings so any reports are going to downplayed or just outright suppressed.

As someone who lives in the north (in the middle of nowhere), I can't say I relate. I feel pretty safe. A shame if you live in the south though.

I do agree however, it's a fucking scandal that they refuse to release any new info on the first case in Sweden. They didn't even quarantine her, just left her and then went radio silent on the matter.

According to China's "official numbers", the fatality rate is 2.3%. Seasonal Flu, by Comparison is .1%

But I am going to go ahead and call bullshit. This thing is killing hospital workers in China, and the quarantine protocols they are instituting are draconian. Its fucking Chernobyl all over again. The commies can't stop lying. The numbers are way higher then what they are saying.

Bet there are people in Washington that have a much better handle on the true scope of the situation.
